I remember when Jay was coming through the ranks he got slagged off for not being good enough.I mean how can a home grown Barden boy be any good.
Unfortunately we have "fans " still calling him and talking about loans. He loves the club and gives his all and yet that's not enough.? Unbelievable !

Frankly, it's not enough.
Jay's a local lad, and has been a great player in the past.
But aside from a good run the first half of last season he's been poor for years. His last 2 seasons PL record is worse than the much maligned Weghorst's both per game and per minute. His pace is gone, he's regularly injured. I don't dispute his effort but lots of players work hard or they wouldn't get there.

If he wasn't "one of our own" the fans would have wanted him gone 2 years ago. I get it, he's experienced and good to have as a hometown talisman but I don't think he offers enough in the PL anymore - and yes I happen to think in this system Weghorst would offer more, given he also did better under Dyches system than Jay.

I have a lot of love for Jay for his history with us and I'd love to be proven wrong but I think last season was his last hurrah, he looked good at a level lower until his injury but it's time to move on for me. Same with Cork. Sentiment isn't enough, Andy Payton was a local lad and he probably stuck around a bit too long too.

I can see us winning a few games with a 10 vs 8 scoreline or similar. 😆
I would be happy if we alternated between 10-8 wins and losses

It's true though.
He had a good spell the first half of last season which ended with his injury. He didn't look the same after, and had been poor for two years prior.
Would you prefer I have selective amnesia?

Jay played a lot better than Weghorst against Benfica.
He was a key player last season which was vital when Barnes was struggling and Tella was getting his fitness up to being able to play 90 minutes (he got hooked after an hour for a number of games at the start of the season)
The way Jay was dropping deep and picking up the ball was key to our success - it was exactly what VK wanted so that our 4 wide players and the likes of Tella had all that space to run into as Jay often drew their defenders to the half way line. When Jay got injured Barnes picked up this role and it worked out perfectly.

Going to be tough for Jay at his age and with his injuries next season but I’d be surprised if VK did not think he had some role to play and his experience will also be important. If VK didn’t think he was good enough he’d have got rid of Jay.

The Tella pursuit seems to be gathering a bit of momentum, so I’m cautiously optimistic that he’ll sign this window.

I am starting to feel the same.

Big thing is that it's clear Southampton are open to selling and the player wants to come. It's all on us really isn't it?

Completely disagree that he played "a lot better", thought Weghorst had the better first half where Jay was anonymous and the sub was unfortunate - wanted to see how he did with Amdouni. Although I appreciate Jay was also out of position.
Second half Jay was better than Weghorsts first half, but he had Amdouni working better behind him, while Weghorst had Jay in that role not doing much, so was also less supported (while acknowledging Jay was out of position. Our attack is a unit these days).
I suspect part of why we are retaining Jay is wage demands, part is experience in the dressing room, but I will be concerned if he's featuring much this season and our squad is close to its limit - and all sentiment aside I'd rather move him on to free up a space.

Jay still has plenty to offer for me but this will no doubt be his last season with us. He is better than some on here give him credit for.

Would prefer to have two younger strikers than Jay and Wout - still concerned about how many goals our four strikers can give us
But CM and LB are now the main priorities for me

Jay has been a fantastic footballer for BFC, but the jury was already out on him during the last season we spent in the PL under Sean. That year he was often not available through injury or illness and when he did feature his contribution was not great. He had a great first half of the season last year under VK, with a team that suddenly became the best pressing and attacking outfit seen in the Championship for a while. Then he disappeared for most of the second half, injured or sick, except for a handful of appearances. He will be 34 in a few days and I dont really see him having an impact in the Prem. I could almost write the same script for Jack Cork. If we continue strengthening the team in numbers as seen recently I can only see the likes of these two being loaned out, alongside Bastian, and maybe even Obefami when he returns, the latter to get match fitness

The effectiveness of all our less mobile forwards was and would be improved with a line breaker like Tella on the pitch,
Like Vydra did in his brief appearances, Tella even more so drags the defence all over the pitch and eventually they sit too deep and that creates space as it did for Barnes.
I don’t know if Foster can do that or if that’s Obafemi’s game, if not and we don’t get Tella we need a proper mobile Centre forward imo

You wouldn’t expect Jay or Wout to get more than 5 & 10 would be amazing but unlikely
I can’t see Foster starting or scoring many at all, I’d love to be proved wrong on that one
Obafemi’s pace, strength with the low centre of gravity and touch are a threat but a hamstring injury is a nightmare for a player like him

1 in 3 goals for B@starts is a good return for a midfielder at championship level
Are you thinking that he plays in the same position as Clarke

Guessing that’s the early part of his career at blackburn as he’s been injured, overweight and useless for the last couple of years.

Obviously It’s the Mowbray link and he obviously thinks he can get a tune out of him
More to the point is it in preparation for losing Clarke

Possibly but don't envy the Sunderland supporters if that's the case. Replacing a jinky, tricky, hot prospect of a winger with a tubby, balding injury-prone waddler.

Let’s not forget, 4 years ago this guy was in the Guardians list of top 50 most promising players in the world, that’s why Monaco shelled out for him. There’s definitely a player in there, and I back VK and CB to bring it out.

Fulham have bid 4m for Hudson odoi, Chelsea want 8m, a bit more reasonable than the 20m they want for maatsen.

Not complaining at all. But have we signed anyone that definitely improves our first 11? Given we don't have maatsen, THB or Tella as of yet we might be a tad weaker.

Again this isn't a moan just wondering what people think.

Thing is we haven’t seen any of those 3 play in the premier league, so we can’t compare how the new players do next year with how those 3 did last year

Of course we don't know how the new signings will do, but I would guess that the coaching received during last season and in this pre-season should see improvement in what we already had.

I don’t think we’ll miss THB ,we’ve got 3 cracking CH’s from last season plus O’Shea,Redmond ,and one of the new signings will cover for Tella ,just need a replacement for Maatsen.

Redmond and Bruun Larsson are both better than Tella.
Al Dakhil improved more than THB at the back end of last season so could argue he is the replacement and O'Shea is replacing Al Dakhil as backup.
The only spot we haven't replaced or improved yet is left back

THB not a miss. We’ll get Tella but a shame about Maatsen.

Redmond and Bruun Larsson are both better than Tella.
Put your rod away. Redmond has as many poor games as good and Bruun Larsson is an unknown at this level.

Al Dakhil improved more than THB at the back end of last season so could argue he is the replacement and O'Shea is replacing Al Dakhil as backup.
The only spot we haven't replaced or improved yet is left back
How do you know that Bruun Larson is better than Tella? And Redmond? I don’t think so. We need to bring Nathan Tella home.

I think Redmond could well be the replacement for Tella. Both players can operate across a front line, both are good pressers of the ball, and both are speedy. Tella definitely has the advantage when it comes to raw pace, but Redmond has the priceless advantage of having played around 250 Premier League games and all the experience that comes with that. It does seem we're still actively pursuing deal for Tella though so who knows.

I also think O'Shea is here to be the replacement for Harwood-Bellis. Some of O'Shea's passing through into midfield were very good against Benfica and he brings some real leadership qualities as well by all accounts.

So that leaves us needing a replacement for Maatsen (or the man himself if a deal can be agreed, though that seems increasingly difficult). We also desperately need a quality addition to central midfield.

Pretty sure we will get Tella now

But we really do need at least another centre midfielder

Everything has gone really quiet on Lokonga, Vranckx and Hamer.

I'm hoping that's because we're soon going to have wrapped up a deal for someone we've never even been linked with before, much like we did with O'Shea and Amdouni.

We've heard a lot about targets for other areas but only those 3 for CM. We know we're after that position and we know the club always have lots of active targets.

Everything had gone quiet and Larsson then next news he is in Portugal with the squad. Really impressive way of doing transfer business. Little snippets get out or get picked up by some of the major journalists and then it happens. Vinny busy on his phone get players enticed.

Because I've seen a lot of Bundesliga games and highlights which is a much higher standard than the championship.
Redmond is a proven premier league player, Tella has had one decent season for a championship team that walked the league.
Nathan Tella has already gone home back to his parent club.

And so far Tella has proven to be no where near good enough for this level.
I ain't fishing it's facts.
Bruun Larsson has been playing a much higher level for years
