The ups and downs of the transfer window is great imo, get all excited about potential signings and discuss with others, it’s all part of being a fan.It Is What It Is wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 1:34 pmI think this thread should be suspended until transfer deadline day on 1st September.
That's the only date we will all know what is what.

Interesting so perhaps it could be in the players benefit or in the clubs.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 1:46 pmProbably depends on the terms set out
I’m vaguely sure that a player has activated it themselves once in the PL despite the club not really wanting them and also the club doing the same to ensure they got a fee
So in theory Brownhill could be in his last year if the extension is to his favour.

Usually if the option is 'in the clubs favour' they can just activate it. If it's the other way it usually means its based on appearances or whatever. Entry of times when a player hasn't played because the club doesn't want to activate the option.
Think Barnes was the most recent to activate an option despite most people thinking he would be off.

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
The option is in the clubs favour not the player, our protection against running his contract down, so 2 years left in effect.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Ifd we sign Delcroix do you think this means no LB incoming and he'll use O'Shea or Delcroix as a LB
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
If an offer comes in matching our valuation of Brownhill, then he will be sold.
That is the business model now, and it makes sense.

It might be fair to suggest that Delcroix might be an option to play as a left sided centre half/left back as the likes of Man City do but I think (hope!) we will still be looking for an out and out left back who can play this system like a Maatsen or Gomez.

Lukebakio to Sevilla for 7 million euro. What a wimp... Hope we can find something better to reinforce our frontline.
Happy with the signing of Delcroix he's a very decent backup for Beyer. He's not a left back although he can play there if needed.

If you asked the users of this board two years ago, if they were confident of signing the players we need to succeed they'd already be on panic alert.
Last season and the beginning of this transfer window shows we are in good hands, I'm completely relaxed about being strong enough to stay up after the window closes.
Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
No inside information just my own thoughts, but I do expect us to use our two domestic loans on or round the final day of the transfer window. I think we will be waiting until then to ensure we get the best players we possibly can and not sign someone only to find out a better player or someone else we wanted becomes available on the final day of the window. I think this will be the case to fill our left back position.

It won’t make me popular on here but I still don’t basically think that Mattsen could defendJakubs Tash wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 2:41 pmIt might be fair to suggest that Delcroix might be an option to play as a left sided centre half/left back as the likes of Man City do but I think (hope!) we will still be looking for an out and out left back who can play this system like a Maatsen or Gomez.
And since we may be defending a tad more in the Prem, he may well have been exposed somewhat

I concur - was always my concern for Maatsen for me, excellent going forward. Not so great defending and was often caught out down our left side.BleedingClaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 4:16 pmIt won’t make me popular on here but I still don’t basically think that Mattsen could defend

Considering the rave reviews Lukebakio got on here here, quite surprised he was sold for €7m.

For a player who apparently couldn’t defend its quite remarkable we conceded the least goals in the division.BleedingClaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 4:16 pmIt won’t make me popular on here but I still don’t basically think that Mattsen could defend

But I’m not the only one to spot Mattsen’s poor positioning, rash challenges and over confidence of his own pace off the mark
Not one of our defenders will look as good this year as last but all the others have defensive qualities first, Mattsen was a lot better going forward than defending

Re: Summer transfer window 2023 - rumours, links and discussion.
Maatsen was always more of a premier league player than a championship’defender’. Highly intelligent, well developed through his early career and a super quick learner.
It’d take him a game to get back up to speed following an injury/suspension absence.
Very rare with any of our team last year, that if a mistake happened would it happen again. Best example being the 2nd half at Shef Utd.
Maatsen will have a stellar career.

I get what your saying but the position he played almost all season was more a left wing back/ left midfield anyway so I don’t think defending was high up on his remit. A lot of attacking came through him and Tella , we look a bit bereft of ideas without them. Although we only have Man City as a marker so far, other players may emerge to fill the gaps , who knows.BleedingClaret wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 4:16 pmIt won’t make me popular on here but I still don’t basically think that Mattsen could defend

It’s a little bit early to say we’re bereft of ideas after 1 game against possibly the best team in the world.Superjohnnyfrancis wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2023 5:27 pmI get what your saying but the position he played almost all season was more a left wing back/ left midfield anyway so I don’t think defending was high up on his remit. I’m suggesting the player occupying that position this year will need to defend first, if Mattsen is good enough to play in front of a LB then he’d be an asset.
He was brilliant playing wing back in a totally dominant team but imo as LB in a less dominant EPL team is a different proposition

Unless there are still injury concerns with him, I wouldn’t see him as a punt. He’d surely be a quality addition and provide some real competition in our midfield.
Very unlikely he will be coming to us anyway, I’d imagine.

AMN has gone to Lyon.
We need a ST and a LB for me, assuming we get Ramsey and keep Brownhill.

I saw he was on the bench for all three City games this season so he must be reasonably fit. Yes, fair enough, I just wondered if they might try to get him to somewhere (home or abroad) playing in Europe. A Brighton or West Ham might appeal without being seen to be a rival, for example.
