A moustache must have been the thing to have back then instead or arm tattoos.

Love these articles… and the timing couldn’t be better.

I was reading yesterday that four clubs needed re-electing after the first season, including Burnley (finished fourth bottom). Burnley being a wealthy boomtown it came as a bit of a shock.

While the usual re-election tactic was to state the qualities of your club, transport links, finances etc. Until the 1920’s the clubs seeking re-election had to make their case at the AGM where each was allowed 3 minutes to put their case. Burnley spent their three minutes apologising for not having taken the league as seriously as they should and would never repeat the mistake. It worked Burnley were re-elected despite the strong cases of Sheffield Wednesday, Bootle, Sunderland and Newton Heath (who all missed out for now).

Stoke 10 votes, Burnley 9, Derby C 8, Notts Co 7,

As promised Burnley started making improvements as a result of the embarrassing shock of needing to be re-elected.

The fine details behind 1898/99 have always fascinated me......We finish 3rd in Division One and yet concede more goals than we score.....Is this unique ?

First of all, apologies for transferring this onerous task onto anyone else, who's even remotely interested on this board.

I'm currently onto season 79 on Div One/PL and no team even comes close to matching our achievement in '98/'99.

To finish the season in the top three with a negative goal difference can only belong to Burnley.

What are you actually checking for, Royboy? Is it the highest ever top flight finish when conceding more goals than scored?

Next task to work it out for divisions two to four ;)
