Martin Tyler
Stepping down as a Sky commentator ahead of the new season but apparently not retiring. Now 77, his contract is not being renewed.

Iconic voice down the years
Re: Martin Tyler
I could see BT Sports / TNT taking him on.
Re: Martin Tyler
Shame. He does do quite a bit for US/Premier League Network I think for the non-UK televised games so may just continue with that.

Long overdue. Good commentator in his day, but last few seasons he’s been rambling and too slow on big moments.

Re: Martin Tyler
Sky have released 8 of their commentating team! That only leaves 5….cost cutting exercise evidently!
Re: Martin Tyler
It’s funny reading the Sky Sports Facebook comments about him, as according to the experts on there he was biased due to being a Man United/Man City/Arsenal/Spurs/Everton/Liverpool/Chelsea fan.
Re: Martin Tyler
He may well support a 'big' club but his childhood team was Chester. He collects their programmes & bought a few off me - absolute gentleman who spoke very well about Burnley.

Re: Martin Tyler
Every Sky commentator and the people who bring live updates from games had to all reapply for their jobs this summer.
Such a shame Sky are constantly shooting themselves in the foot, from what used to be probably the countries leading channel for live football is rapidly becoming the worst.

Soccer Saturday won’t be the same next season. No Jeff, and now gonna be missing several familiar faces from around the grounds. As stated earlier, Sky seem to find it very easy to shoot themself in the foot. If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it. People will soon find another channel.

He has always been Mr Sky football with his 'and it's live!' bit. I suppose he is at the age now where he wants to ease off a bit.

Still got the video. It's quite a high quality production compared to the end of season highlights videos that were available at the time!gawthorpe_view wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 9:25 amHe did the commentary on our Sherpa Van final with Andy Gray in the very early days of satellite football coverage with BSB.

Re: Martin Tyler
Sky seem adamant on making change just for the sake of it.
They have ruined soccer Saturday changing the panel and now Jeff S is going.
They’ve got rid of Soccer AM - which has been decent for a couple of years now with good bands and guests mixed with some of the old stuff of showing the best goals of the week and showboat.
They’ve gradually got rid of some of the best cricket presenters.
And now for whatever reason deciding to get rid of their best and most knowledgeable football commentator
In a campaign to be more diverse they seem to have misplaced the ageist memo.

He's 77. He's well past his best. Basically a lot of the Sky presenters and commentators that joined 15-20 years ago are getting towards retirement age. It's natural they just move on and the new generation come through. The make up of that new generation will be more diverse. It's just not going to be jobs for the boys anymore.

He talked too much instead of doing his job, which was to tell us the name of the player in possession. Should've gone years ago.
Re: Martin Tyler
As long as that ball ache Hinchcliffe doesn’t get the main role.

On Goals on Sunday with Chris Kamara, was there another bloke who was also on the Burnley Are Back video from 1992? I can't remember the name of the bloke...

We’re losing some great commentators and pundits and now have the likes of Clinton Morrison, Jamie Mackie, Micah Richards and Ally McCoist to listen too.

I quite like McCoist.
Seems fairly balanced, knowledgeable and a decent bloke. Give me him on co commentary over Keown any day.

Re: Martin Tyler
Amazing commentator back in the day, one of the best, but I remember having a game on at the back end of last season, can't remember who was playing, say Liverpool, and I was in the kitchen when a goal was scored, heard it from the living room, heard Tyler say "and Liverpool have scored" (or whomever it was who scored), and I swear to god he said it like it was something grave and unfortunate, not with any kind of bias creeping in or anything, but with the kind of intonation a commentator would have if they were saying something like "and it's a second yellow" (with an 'oh dear' unspoken but heavily implied). Took me a minute to realise from the other room that a goal had actually been scored, because even though he was saying the words he wasn't feeling it, and me, being kind of switched off, had to do a double-take cos it took me a sec to realise a goal had actually been scored. That tone, that right there on that one line of commentary, that should be nowhere near a goal. That's just the culmination of a slow and steady decline in energy from him. It's a shame, but I think he needs to move on because his energy just doesn't match the game any more. I want energy from footy. I don't want some stuffy, gentlemanly traditionalist talking like golf commentator, I want the crown noise turned up on the broadcast and some UFC-energy commentators losing their $hit.
In fact, if you want a better idea of the tone I'm talking about, imagine Phil Bird's tone on commentary when someone scores against us. Dread, worry, frustration, that kind of thing. That was Tyler's tone in that line. It's fine when it's Phil Bird because we expect bias from Burnley's in-house commentator, but it's not really appropriate from a neutral standpoint.

Maybe Granada are reviving ‘Kick off’ essential viewing on a Sunday afternoon when I was a kid… and a nice potential cushy presenting job to finish off his career. Up there with Motty, Moore and Sinstadt as the voices of football for me.

I know Tyldesley did most of it on the video, but thinking about it, I think the Northampton game may have been Alistair Mann
I might have to rewatch it later on

I've not stumbled across Matterface much tbh but I saw a clip of him on youtube doing the West Ham Europa final for Talksport radio and he was superb (I was really surprised given all the negative comments I read about him!)

I seem to be in a minority here but having played against him and witnessed his attitude post match I've always considered the man an arrogant arsehole and have never liked his commentating "style". Who will blow the smoke up Carragher's arse now Tyler is gone?

Re: Martin Tyler
He is much better on the radio. It’s like he gets nervous on TV and tries too hard to be profound.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 3:28 pmI've not stumbled across Matterface much tbh but I saw a clip of him on youtube doing the West Ham Europa final for Talksport radio and he was superb (I was really surprised given all the negative comments I read about him!)
Re: Martin Tyler
He is one of the best radio commentators, explains exactly what is happening, and can fill in when nothings happening.... unfortunately that style doesn't work as well on TVVegas Claret wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 3:28 pmI've not stumbled across Matterface much tbh but I saw a clip of him on youtube doing the West Ham Europa final for Talksport radio and he was superb (I was really surprised given all the negative comments I read about him!)

Re: Martin Tyler
I agree, certainly a lot better than his tv commentary although I wouldn’t quite go as far as “superb”. I think it’s the fact that on the radio he has to describe the action, it means a lot less opportunity to waffle, and more often than not his waffling adds zero to the viewer experience.Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2023 3:28 pmI've not stumbled across Matterface much tbh but I saw a clip of him on youtube doing the West Ham Europa final for Talksport radio and he was superb (I was really surprised given all the negative comments I read about him!)

Alistair Bruce-Ball for me is the best radio commentator. The Geordie fellow (on 5 live) who’s name escapes me is also very good.
