Allan Border - Parkinson’s Disease
Great batsman & captain for Australia. He’s confirmed today that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2016.
He’s 68 now and said m: "I get the feeling I'm a hell of a lot better off than most. At the moment I'm not scared, not about the immediate future anyway. I'm 68. If I make 80, that'll be a miracle. I've got a doctor friend and I said if I make 80, that'll be a miracle, and he said, 'That will be a miracle.'"

Sounds like it’ll be a miracle if he makes 80 to me

Re: Allan Border - Parkinson’s Disease
Sad news regarding AB.
He had some amusing tales about his time in the Lancashire League.
He remembered hitting a century at Burnley on a Saturday and his East Lancs team lost the match. On the Sunday he hit 170+ not out at Rawtenstall and his team lost again. At the weekly committee meeting he was flabbergasted to hear that the club were unhappy and looking for a better bowling professional for the following season.

Re: Allan Border - Parkinson’s Disease
A good friend of mine was diagnosed with Parkinson's when he was 58, he's now 73.
He doesn't shake in the way some may associate Parkinson's, though he does have a somewhat stumbling kind of gait and his coordination isn't what it was.
But he still walks his dog every afternoon, and can still pick a tune on his guitar.
He's an inspiration to me.

I was at both those games. Burnley had a sub pro from Lancs called Geoff Trim. He didn’t bowl and I think he scored one with the bat having opened. Burnley were eight or nine wickets down when they won it.beeholeclaret wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 6:19 pmSad news regarding AB.

The Rawtenstall game was in the Worsley Cup and Rawtenstall chased nearly 300 with ease.

I was on the Burnley game - 1978. Burnley wanted 3 to win when the 9th wicket fell and John Edmondson & Gaz Downey got them in singles with 2 balls to spare.

Re: Allan Border - Parkinson’s Disease
Similarly, I have/had a friend in Portugal who has Parkinson's. He used to play for Torquay and had a bright future, England set-up when a teenager. Knee injury did for that. Then he was a musician and a teacher. He has produced four children over two marriages, one of whom is in the orchestra backing ELO. Sadly, the disease is overwhelming him now at 75/76, and he has returned to England. One of the best blokes I have ever met.Juan Tanamera wrote: ↑Fri Jun 30, 2023 8:31 pmA good friend of mine was diagnosed with Parkinson's when he was 58, he's now 73.

Sad news. A great batsman who retrospectively proved to be one of the most famous names in the history of the LL.

I was at the Rawtenstall game, and subsequently in the bar, then the "old house" pub with Peter Wood/Border/Abid Ali and a few others....there were no long faces from the East Lancs boys..just a great game of cricket and a damn good session afterwards.

A picture of the crowd at Rawtenstall from that match.
