Wimbledon 2023

Post by ClaretsPadiham » Thu Jul 06, 2023 7:32 pm

Not seen a thread, sorry if there is one ?

Andy Murray just about to play now on BBC, the roof just closing on centre court so could be playing till very late.

Murray ranked 40th in the world about to play 5th ranked.

I don't mind Murray, he seems quite down to earth. But the BBC coverage is full of posh, self-satisfied types. I can't bear the smugness. Andrew Castle, John Lloyd, Tiger Tim, Annabel Croft etc. And they wonder why the game never takes off outside its middle class roots.

An absolute warrior is Murray.

Shame that match couldn't finish today as coming back tomorrow favours the Greek fella I reckon.

You sound very bitter. Have you been blackballed by Market Harborough tennis club?

He would've been desperate to stay on and until 11pm. Great sportsman.

Murray did well but Wimbledon’s support for Russian players makes this year’s event one to miss

It's a long way from playing on tarmac and dodging broken glass down Alkincoates. I'm just feeling mutinous after a week of watching buffoons in the MCC and then the stuffiness of Wimbledon. Can't be doing with it.

Why? What have the Russian players done?

This….no place for politics in sport, the Russian players have done nothing…

I agree totally but sadly the old Iron Curtain countries used sport as propaganda and now the oil rich middle East countries are taking over sports, in a major way, for their egos.
I’d take nationalism out of the Olympics and drop the 3 competitors max’ per country rule. They should all be competing for themselves and if the top 10 are all from one country so be it.

So by that reasoning psg shouldn’t compete? Newcastle shouldn’t compete? Who are the west to decide who and who shouldn’t compete? And can we define ‘propeganda’? Because the way I see it, it isn’t just the east using sport as ‘propeganda’

Why can’t we just let sport be sport without all the politics?

I think you’ve read my post from the wrong angle. I want nationalism out of individual sports, you obviously can’t in international team sports. Therefore they are not Russian or Belorussian tennis players, they are just tennis players.

Anyone else feel sick of the sight of Djokovic?

I turn off as soon as he’s a break up.

Hoping he gets beat each time but looks like the title is in the bag did him again 👎

No doubting Djokovic is one of the best players in history - though like many sports it’s hard to compare eras.
But I also find myself bored watching him and wanting him to get beat.

He’s also quite a difficult person to like especially compared to Federer, Nadal, Murray etc. Seems to have a chip on his shoulder that he’s never been as popular as Nadal and Federer.

Hopefully gets beat by Sinner….but looking unlikely with how well he is playing.

Keys v Sabalenka

I hope Keys wins because I can’t stand the unnecessary screeching and screaming from Sabalenka.

Why don’t the tennis regulatory authorities do something about it?
