Re: Have you ever done a DNA heritage test?
Not DNA but family tree related and my Cousin started looking into this during lockdown. We are MacAlpine and always particular about the spelling and emphasise the Mac and capital A.
It turns out as he went back through the generations the spelling was down to whoever recorded this in Parish Registers.
We have our spelling plus, McAlpine, MacAlpin, McAlpin and another which I've forgotten.
It matters not as Kenneth MacAlpine was the person who was crowned!

So the locals were the Britons (agree) and they are now the Welsh and Cornish. So everyone not Welsh or Cornish are boat people, economic migrants!dsr wrote: ↑Sun Jul 09, 2023 11:55 pmIt's quite specific, reading between the lines. The Angles (and Saxons) came in after the Romans left, so about 500-600 AD. Neither the English name nor the Englisg people existed before then; the residents were Britons. So that's the starting point. The Vikings came from about 800 AD, but they have their own category so "English" must have been defined by then. I suggest the later part of that period, otherwise the various tribes of Britons (pushed out to be Welsh and Cornish) wouldn't have had time to get clear. So let's say 700 AD is when "English" was defined for this purpose.
English is probably the most mongrel of European races, so it is all a bit bogus, really. As I suspect you're implying.
Rwanda with the lot of them!

But before you get too excited, the tribe of Scots came from Ireland. By boat. See you on the flight to Rwanda

Only the Scots. There are some Gaels to export too. Just us Picts then, left for a quiet life with our mate up.dsr wrote: ↑Mon Jul 10, 2023 11:42 pmBut before you get too excited, the tribe of Scots came from Ireland. By boat. See you on the flight to Rwanda

Re: Have you ever done a DNA heritage test?
I might get this done. I have 4 branches of the family tree going back from early 1700s to the Irish connection leaving for Haslingden because of the famine, 1847.
So at great-great grandfather level I have, Swinford(Ire), Leith(Scotland), Newcastle & Sunderland. We are all just inherited DNA so I think I’ll give it a do.

Re: Have you ever done a DNA heritage test?
Thanks for your kind offer but we’ve been up and scoured the cemetery, which couldn’t be better laid out, sadly with no luck. The family name back then was Tonnery but not a one to be found.Mayoclaret wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 9:28 pmI live about 5 miles from Swinford in Mayo TT, happy to help if I can eg if you were after any Gravestone photos etc relating to your Irish branch.

Re: Have you ever done a DNA heritage test?
,No problem TT. Tonnery is an unusually rare name, there are plenty of graves bearing the name Tunney in Swinford and surrounding cemeteries which may be a variation stemming from the original Tonnery. That isn't much use I'm afraid. Good luck.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Tue Jul 11, 2023 11:13 pmThanks for your kind offer but we’ve been up and scoured the cemetery, which couldn’t be better laid out, sadly with no luck. Re: Have you ever done a DNA heritage test?
It was a strange period. Left Ireland as Tonnery, next generation in Haslingden were Tondry and my Grandma was Tondra. I put it all down to the awful handwriting back then and mis-reading.Mayoclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jul 12, 2023 4:59 pm,No problem TT. They say a lot of names were spelled differently when entering the States through Ellis Island because many of the migrants couldnt write so were written by the people processing them.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Wed Jul 12, 2023 5:29 pmIt was a strange period. I would imagine the same happened here too

Another one here with Swinford connections. I had one grandfather from Swinford and another grandfather from Foxford. Live in Tarmonbarry now , just by the River Shannon. Grew up in Accrington.
