Burnley FC Award Winners 1985
It was a shocking season for us with relegation to the fourth division but there were three award winners at the Supporters Club presentation night.

Got Biggins and Hoskins’ autographs down at centre spot when I was in Junior Clarets. Got Trevor Steven’s a few years earlier in the same book.
Do kids still do that, or is it just selfies now?

The photo shows only 3 of them, but what a squad we had that season which shouldn't have been anywhere near the bottom 3.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Jul 08, 2023 3:46 pmIt was a shocking season for us with relegation to the fourth division but there were three award winners at the Supporters Club presentation night.

Hoskin hadn’t played in the first team at that time but had won the young player award. Hutchison was Player of the Year and Biggins won goal of the season.

He was marginally better than his namesake.

Benson was dreadful, I genuinely thought I'd never witness a worse manager, then staggered in Buchan, not long after Cavanagh limped into the dugout. Horrendous times, young Clarets are so lucky and if they witnessed those times I'm sure they'd understand us Clarets of a certain age cautious reactions at times.

I remember when Buchan got the job, usual night at centrespot meet theneq manager etc, said the usual things to get us dwindling band of enthusiasts on board, sleeping giant,no longer a rest home for players wanting one last pay day etc etc, bizarrely Trevor Steven was there, I believe he had married a local lady, he was overheard at bar saying we've all heard this before.

Trevor Steven’s in-laws lived on my street when I was a kid. We used to see him quite a lot when he was at Everton. Think I’ve got a signed photo somewhere.

Trevor was long gone to Everton by the time Buchan pitched up. His wife Karen was from Padiham.bfcjg wrote: ↑Sat Jul 08, 2023 9:45 pmI remember when Buchan got the job, usual night at centrespot meet theneq manager etc, said the usual things to get us dwindling band of enthusiasts on board, sleeping giant,no longer a rest home for players wanting one last pay day etc etc, bizarrely Trevor Steven was there, I believe he had married a local lady, he was overheard at bar saying we've all heard this before.
Strange bloke was Buchan, engaging one day and then ignore you the next. That run of Benson, Buchan, Cavanagh was frightening.

Even having gone through the Waddle Year is enough for an ingrained cautious streak but it doesn't compare to that calamitous run of "managers".bfcjg wrote: ↑Sat Jul 08, 2023 8:54 pmBenson was dreadful, I genuinely thought I'd never witness a worse manager, then staggered in Buchan, not long after Cavanagh limped into the dugout. I think he was at Rangers or Everton at the time, must have been his in laws or family friends, showed though he still had fondness for the club.
