Southend Utd

Post by AmbleClaret » Wed Jul 12, 2023 9:58 am

Another old club potentially due to cease to exist today if the winding-up order in the High Court is granted.
Remember playing these for a few seasons during our darkest days in the '80s. How fortunes can change.

Was it not Southend we hammered in the green and black halfed shirt we loaned them?

And it was Southend who came to Turf Moor late season 1981/82 and beat us 3-5 when we were hopefully on our way to promotion. Former Bury centre forward, Derek Spence had an absolute worldie for them. Beat them 1-4 on penultimate game of the season a few weeks later to assure promotion after a dreadful start to the season.

Club Staff haven’t been paid for four months. Doesn’t look like a happy ship.

Yes a wonderful promotion Friday night in Southend! Good memories although too much cider slightly clouded the experience…

Those games in 82 seem like yesterday. Ex Claret Dave Smith was their manager at the time. The 3-5 game was freakish. As Silky said Derek Spence tore us apart. We went 2-0 down in no time then clawed it back to 2-2 and they went down to 10 men just before HT. it looked like it would be a regulation fight back as that team was so resilient but we totally fell apart in the first 15 minutes of the second half. Phelan and more importantly as it proved, Overson, were missing that night and in retrospect we should have taken it as a flashing light warning for the following season. Happily the trip to the Essex coast was much better. A lovely May Friday night and we played really well.

The one and only time I've been to Southend was on that Friday night in 1982. I really cannot remember anything about the game - no, I was sober - except the scoreline. Did Tommy Cassidy score that night? He wasn't excessively mobile but a good footballer. Just two months afterwards he was in Spain for Northern Ireland for the WC, along with Billy H., and, having just checked, he came on as a sub in that magnificent win against Spain.

It was Wharton, McGee 2 and Laws who scored. From memory it was Cassidy who played a sublime ball to Wharton for the first

He did. In two spells that season. ‘We’ll take more care of you Paul McGee’ we sang during his loan spell. We needed him for the run in following Taylor’s injury and we finally got him from QPR. Sadly he struggled in Div 2 the following season.

The Southend crisis has been going on for some time and it has been one blow after another for their fans.

Chairman Ron Martin is public enemy number one amidst accusations that he's looking after himself somewhat in attempts to sell the club. One supporter said: “Ron Martin relinquished his moral right to prioritise his own interests some time ago. If he had done the right thing and put the club up for sale 12 to18 months ago, he might have had time to negotiate a better deal for himself. His pigheaded stubbornness or total delusion and denial has taken us into the last chance saloon, so he must take the hit on the chin and put the interests of Southend United Football Club first.”

Staff not paid in months, a player has now handed in his notice and the league might kick them out yet even if they survive.

Really sad state of affairs.

He scored some really important goals in 81/82. Those two at Southend, the winner against Carlisle at the Turf and a first minute goal against Walsall stick in the mind!

Remember drinking with Rocky and my dad before the game. Rocky got kicked out, think it was the Waddle season? He tried to climb fence onto the pitch. Saw him after the game he was more ****** off that his new shirt was covered in anti vandalism paint

Was at the game in March 2007 with my lad. We lost 1 0 to a 90th minute goal. Seem to think it was in the endless non winning run under Steve Cotterell. How our fortunes have differed since.

94/95 season ……. we beat them 5-1 at Turf with John Gayle scoring an implausible overhead kick.

I went down there for the return fixture where I think Kurt Nogan scored his first goal for us. I seem to remember us being 2-0 down very early on.

The 2-2 draw in 83/84 was a night game. Bobby Moore was manager at the time and I’m pretty sure that Trevor Whymark played for them. Last gasp equaliser from Billy Hamilton after we had gone 1-0 up through Tommy Hutch in the first half. The season was fizzling out fast by then

Been twice, once on a Friday night in Jan 1986 when we won and then again early on in the Waddle season, where unsurprisingly we lost and didn't score. Again.

In the Jan 86 game we got a late, late winner from Ray Deakin if I recall

I was on a CT/Box Car chara to that game. I was working at Oddies bakery at the time and Saturday morning was a working day, so it was not long after getting home that i was off to work. And the Saturday evening i went to a function for stevie2112 at the Sparrow Hawk. Maybe an engagement do or similar.

Hope they pull through, be sad to see another old club fall.

I remember a fair few years ago now, when they moved most of there home games to Friday night kick offs. I was always wondering why they were playing on Friday nights, till I searched online.

Apparently it was a fans favourite polled by the club. Friday night out in Southend, to get the younger people into Roots hall. Go on the game then to the pubs/clubs afterwards.

Southend had a very detailed warm up with lots of stretching and exercises in one forgettable game.
We came on kicked a few balls about and got absolutely thrashed. Don't remember the year we lost, but then I was on when we clinched promotion with Brian Laws scoring

Can't find much on it now, but found this from 2012. Looks like they asked opposition teams to do it.

"Southend United have revealed they asked all the other League Two clubs to switch matches at Roots Hall to Friday evenings.

This week's opponents Scunthorpe have obliged, as have five other clubs.

Southend hopes to enhance the atmosphere and maybe even attract supporters from Premier League side West Ham.

"You can't help but have an atmosphere when the lights are on. The fans love watching the team playing on a Friday night," reports BBC Essex.

"We put it to every club we're playing on Saturday that we want to play on a Friday. Only six have said they'll do it .

"We might get one or two West Ham fans down and bolster the crowd."

This season's home fixtures against Bristol Rovers, Fleetwood, Mansfield, Rochdale and Newport have also been switched to Fridays.

Last week's 3-1 defeat by Morecambe was a Saturday match"

Up there with the most annoying games attended under Waddle, remember many were furious after the game. Did the traveller score?

We had a fair drink around town afters and ended up in a student bar.

That time we walloped them 5-1 at home when they wore our previous season's infamous green and black away shirt came after an eventful week. We'd played Port Vale at home on Boxing Day, went 1-0 up before they scored two worldies from outside the box to put them 1-2 up. The game ended up getting abandoned due to the waterlogged pitch. In the few days that followed, apparently, Jamie Holland was in a car accident and missed the match, John Deary was supposedly off to Wigan but ended up playing, Andy Saville and Craig Armstrong were brought in as loanees and made their debuts with Saville scoring and Southend left their kit behind.

Tranmere and Stockport played most of their home games on a Friday night for years to avoid clashing with Everton/Liverpool and City/United. I might be wrong on this but I'm sure I can recall the league bringing in a rule that limited the number of times they could do that in a season.

That's awful, always the fans that suffer. The financial disparity between the premium league and lower leagues always leaves these clubs vulnerable to dodgy owners. Not really a bad club, I remember Ray Ternent telling me about how much he liked it there.

Virtually every home game at one point for both with one of the two big clubs close always being at home on the Saturday.

Those two clubs were even allowed to move home games to a Friday on the final weekend of the season.

On 9th May 1987, we played Orient at home but Stockport v Southend and Tranmere v Exeter were played on the Friday night. Tranmere won 1-0 but had they lost that game they would have become the first team to be automatically relegated from the Football League. Quite how you could allow them to play before every other club is beyond me. By the time the rest of us kicked off, they knew they were safe.
