It’s a strange one. A 35 year old, released by a relegated team, seems to be a preferred option over the former captain.

Apparently you have to be very careful with old Johnys.

He’s signed a short term deal to allow him to play in two pre season games for non first team.

Replacement for Phil Jones, big boots to fill there then.

A 35 year old who can't stay fit either. Not even like you could rely on him to be a squad player.

I can see this ending up as a coaching role, with some under 23 games thrown in

Said it before but I’m still it convinced by Ten Hag at United.

£85m for Antony is a crime.

Giggs, Jonny Evans, Ched Evans and Mason Greenwood heading up the HR department.

Any manager who sees maguire for what he is I’d suggest is doing a sterling job.

Expect manure to be top three next season.

Every chance he’s been signed to be an over age player for the U23’s.

It’s a thing now. Tom Huddlestone was at United last season. Jay Spearing is back at Liverpool.

Why would you need to sign a deal to play in pre season games?

Isn’t it like an unnamed trailist playing?

No idea - didn’t make much sense to me either but United have said he’s signed a short term deal to allow him to play in two friendlies in Edinburgh & San Diego.

Him signing for United now stretches the record which says United have had a player managed by Alex Ferguson in their squad since 1974 - which was Arthur Albiston.

Evans isn't working for free, and is now committed to the club during that period and will be expected to undertake all the duties of the playing staff.

A trialist can down tools and go to another club if the opportunity arose.

It's got to be this. They also had Paul McShane before Tom Huddlestone. Even Southampton have Olly Lancashire as U21 player/coach.

Similar to when Dyche signed Steven Reid back in 2014

Presumably so they can pay him, although that also seems odd.

Tom Huddlestone is still there, announced a few weeks ago he has extended his deal.

Without Evans it would have continued for the time being with Heaton at the club.
