Today’s Blast from our Clarets Past (IV) - Kevin Hird
Any memories?
Key moments or contributions?
Any great goals? I think he scored a few hat-tricks?
I never saw him play for burnley, but as a youngster, I attended all of his soccer coaching sessions at Colne Park High School and everyone of his Easter and summer soccer weeks at Rolls Royce in Barnoldswick. He was a top bloke and I became good friends with his son, Sam, through football but mainly through music.
An absolutely fantastic bloke. Often did the whole lot on his own (risk assessments wouldn’t like that these days), unbelievably generous with his time and knowledge and you could tell that he was a fantastic professional, such was his level of skill, even around children.

Kevin's wife used to teach me at Casterton Primary school. I believe she was called Mrs Hird if my memory serves me correct.

Scored two (I think) penalties in my first ever game on the turf in a 3-1 against Exeter in 1985!

We spoke to Kevin on the El Lanclasico podcast back in November. Interesting chat, good of him to give us some of his time.

Didn't he get into a punch up with Martin Buchan, which led to Buchan resigning as manager

Late 70’s he was at Rovers………around the time of Simon Garner, Noel Brotherston, Glen Keeley, Tony Parkes……………..and when Terry Cochrane scored that cracker at Ewood!!!kenyon6923 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 10:19 amPlayed for Rovers as well if I remember right, sure he was a right back or full back back then !!

Funny the things you remember, down at Walsall winning 2-3 but ending up getting relegated from division 3 in the 80s.
In the warm up KH was striking the ball with his 'back leg' into the top corner each time. I think he was more of a skillful midfield schemer for us.

A top man. My dad was a joiner in Colne and as I recall used to see Kevin Hird when he worked at Riddioughs woodyard. I also seem to remember Graham White, the Colne Dynamoes manger working there. These are just my recollected memories from childhood....really not sure why a pro footballer would be working in a Colne timber-yard .I think before he "made it" in football perhaps.

Was that the game where the thug John Sitton broke Ash Hoskin's leg in the first minutes of the game?Vegas Claret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 12:09 pmmy biggest memory of Kevin Hird - I was mascot against Orient in 1985 and he missed a penalty !! I remember him scoring a hat trick against Rotherham - the season we went down to the 4th division I think.

Blimey!
Hardest shot I’ve ever seen, Kevin Hird away at Cambridge.

Kevin has not changed over the years despite his great success as a footballer. I met him the other day and had a good chat with him.

His brother has a farm next to Colne golf club. Sometimes see Kevin helping him out a bit, always seemed a pleasant enough chap.

That one certainly ‘stayed hit’ and in the first minute too. We were 0-4 up after 35 minutes in a game that was undoubtedly the highlight of a woeful season.CharlieinNewMexico wrote: ↑Mon Feb 12, 2024 6:36 amBlimey!

He played when I was mascot against Orient in 1985. Game finished 1-1. I think Wayne Biggins had a penalty saved by Rhys Wilmot of Orient (on loan from Arsenal at the time) and Hird equalized for us (or the other way around, I don't remember)

Graham White hired ex pro’s at Riddioughs when they played for the Dynamoes as he was the CEO of the woodyard this was just before all the money troubles that followed.Stalbansclaret wrote: ↑Thu Aug 03, 2023 12:15 pmA top man. Scored a hat-trick along with Biggins in the 9-0 cup win at Penrith in 1984. (NINE)
