They assisted each other's goals in that game as well.

50 years ago today.....
10/4/74.....Newcastle Utd 1 Burnley 2.
Goals from Dobo and Geoff Nulty gave us a fairly comfortable win at St.James Park. It came just eleven days after our defeat to them in the FA Cup semi-final at Sheffield and those two heartbreaking goals from MacDonald.
But it didn't end there as, remarkably, we played Newcastle twice more before the end of April. Once in the Texaco Cup final when we lost 1-2 and then the final league home game of the season which ended 1-1.
An eventful end of the season for Adamson's team and a first season back in the top flight. We finished 6th in the table.

12/4/86 Burnley 1 Cambridge Utd 1.
An attendance of just 2,796 for this Division Four fixture with Tommy Cavanagh by now in charge.
Neil Grewcock with our goal, not the last important goal Neil would score for us on the Turf.

A day late unfortunately but never mind. April 16 th 1973 a 2-0 home win over cup finalists Sunderland saw us gain promotion back to the First division after a 2 year absence. I was there, I enjoyed it and they really were exciting times. A good few days ahead of us.

18/4/14....Blackpool 0 Burnley 1.
Michael Kightly with the second half winner for yet another victory in that memorable 2013/14 season. It seemed like half of Burnley had made it over to Blackpool that day as we continued on that relentless march back to the Premier League.
Just three games left after this one which we comfortably negotiated to finish runners-up some eight points ahead of third placed Derby County.
Leicester were clear at the top but one unusual stat is that although they ended nine points ahead of us they still lost more games than Burnley over the season.

1987, won 2-0 at Spotland on Easter Saturday. Remember it well, big win that was.
I'd have been 14 and I think this was the game that made me realise what it was to be a Claret. My dad had stopped going and we went to watch Dobbo and the ex Clarets at Gigg Lane with odd ventures to the directors box at Maine Rd with comps. This game convinced me that Burnley was the team for me. Never looked back.

Most appropriate that today's featured game includes a classy performance and stunning goal from a certain Leighton James.... RIP Taffy.
The James goal was in the first-half followed by further goals in the second-half from Casper and Dobson.

Re: On this day
Think the goal that Taffy scored was his first since a stunning strike at Hillsboro ba k in October when we won 0-1 in front of MOTD cameras.
Day before had seen us win 0-2 at Oxford. They had another home game on the 21st v Carlisle whose team bus was outside the ground after our game which they'd watched. Went to Oxford on a coach from Haslingden, a journey some of us still talk about now with, I think, the last person being dropped off around 4.30am. Happy days, though.

Just to complete the above Liverpool won the 1st division championship in 1966 but on this date they lost 2-0 at a very bright but also very muddy Turf Moor. One of the best performances I've witnessed over many years.
Same date in the late 70's Billy Ingham scored his wonder goal v Chelsea to earn him the tag 'ginger Pele'. We won the game 1-0.

The guy in the grey jacket with the orange trim looking like his shoes were more interesting than the scoreline is a mate of mine. He accompanied me in Sheffield only last weekend and I can safely say he's still as miserable after a 4-1 away victory. AND he has the cheek to address me as "Dark Cloud"!!

I seem to remember being gutted after the Southampton game. I think PNE had won in the last minute, or something, to keep us waiting - may have even been a Wallace free kick.

Apologies. You are dead right. We got the point at Southampton and Preston won away at Birmingham with, as you say, a classic Ross Wallace free kick.
I'm guessing that if Preston hadn't won at Brum then that point might have been enough or am I digging a deeper hole for myself?
Re: On this day

The game between Birmingham and Preston was a tea time kick off and I think that Wallace's winner for them meant we had to wait a bit longer to ensure a play off place.

Re: On this day
Saturday, April 27th, 1996 League Div 2.
Wrexham 0 Burnley 2 Robinson, Nogan.
With that win and with Carlisle & Swansea losing, Burnley were safe from a return to the basement with 2 games to play.
Saturday, April 27th, 2013 Championship.
Wolves 1 Burnley 2 Ings, Paterson.
This win made us safe and left Wolves needing to win on the final day and hope both Peterborough and Barnsley lose.
Wolves lost 2-0 at Brighton and Posh went down with 54 points.

Re: On this day
I may be wrong, but I think had we won that game we'd have been playing in Europe the following season. Bloody McDonald again if I remember rightly!! Was that the game where their team coach was attacked whilst stopped at the traffic lights in Brierfield after the match and a brick went through the window hitting John Tudor (good player actually) and injuring him quite badly? The story in the paper was that McDonald jumped off the coach and chased the culprits, but couldn't catch them despite his lightening pace, which brought more than a few wry smiles and jibes about the pace of the Burnley defence!Claret1205 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 27, 2024 10:39 amNo messing about 50 years ago today. A final game of the season away at Preston. Anyone who was there that day doesn't need me to describe the scenes. For those that weren't we needed a point to be promoted as champions; we got it with a 1-1 draw in front of a crowd that could safely be described as very Claret. Wonderful end to an amazing season. Back in division one after a two year hiatus.

30th April 1962. A game in an exciting era often overlooked. Despite an appearance in the FA Cup Final five days later we completed a very disappointing end of season run-in with a 4-0 defeat at Sheff Wed. Can still remember seeing this result as a 10 year old along with a photograph of Gordon Harris being carried from the field. Everything seemed to be going wrong; runners-up in the league( which we should have won comfortably) and a Cup Final appearance at the weekend. Don't know how I coped.

Re: On this day
Newcastle were our downfall that season. Semi final defeat (with Waldron hanging off Macdonald like a skirt as he bore down on the goal we were behind). Texaco final I believe should have been a 2 legged affair but reduced to one because of them being in the Cup Final. And I think (not certain) that the draw at home in the league cost us a place in Europe (with Macdonald again scoring late on to equalise). I hated Macdonald with a passion that season.Royboyclaret wrote: ↑Wed Apr 10, 2024 4:40 am50 years ago today.....

If ever there was going to be a draw. I seem to recall they were ‘taking turns’ in possession for the last half hour. But what a day. The Preston end was a sea of Claret and Blue.

I was at the game, all sorts happened! They had received a points deduction a few days before and the draw relegated them - the football league had said if they weren’t relegated they’d be docked another 10 points and if they were relegated, they would start league one on -10.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 25, 2024 2:52 pmThink I'm right saying a point at a very feisty Southampton in 2009 got us a play off place. 2-2 at the end of the match.
David McGoldrick missed a penalty with saints 2-1 up and we soon after equalised.
