Agree, disagree ?
I think he raises some good points about the money and egos involved.

Re: Troy Deeney comment
Rather than retire, I admire players who can drop down leagues if there aren't any lucrative offers for them. It's about giving back.bfcjg wrote: ↑Sat Sep 09, 2023 10:54 amhttps://twitter.com/FootyAccums/status/ ... gEVww&s=19

Although playing at the top level compared to League Two is probably much different now. It's a lot more physical. Ian Wright said he struggled in Division 2 as he was kicked a lot - that was 20 years ago.
So I think you have to be a certain type of player who can handle that. Deeney seems the type who could do it.

Seems to be bang on with the money.
Once they've earned £100k a week, they never wanna earn less
Deeney is clearly sill enjoying playing football and not just chancing his luck picking up cheques.

Ian Wright just slowed down enough so he could be kicked.

Troy Deeney is spot on - and not just about footballers. If you get made redundant any time during your career - ie. contract comes to an end - you've got the choice of taking another job even though it is offering a lot less money than the previous one or remaining unemployed.

Re: Troy Deeney comment
This kind of open pandering is the more boring footballer's way of pushing a media career once they're out of the game. I am glad he is enjoying playing at a lower level but it's not really clear why others should if they don't want to. A career at the top level coupled with sensible financial decisions means never needing another job. Taking a job you don't want or need would be really rather silly.

Re: Troy Deeney comment
He does have a point
They can carry on earning and being adored by football fans for another couple of seasons just by dropping down a league or two, yet they let their egos get in the way.
They can’t all switch to coaching or media work so it doesn’t make sense to cut their noses off to spite their faces

Re: Troy Deeney comment
Not sure what ego has got to do with it. If they don’t need the money why should they work? I presume those commenting otherwise would take a part time job at Tescos if they won the euro millions.
Re: Troy Deeney comment
Largely agree with Deeney here
If players don’t drop down a level or 2, or prefer to sit around on the fringes of a PL squad, then you have to question their motivation.
If you do something you love, or supposedly love, and you know you can only do it for a limited time, then surely you would do it for as long as possible?
Unless your motivation is money orientated, which for players like Danny Drinkwater or Danny Rose it undoubtedly is.

Not trying to be contradictory, but I would have thought that a gradual descent and playing at a lower level for a few years would be much better for their mental well-being. (Happy to be challenged on this though).

Deeney says the people in question were on holiday in Dubai over the summer, hard to see that as too taxing for their mental health.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Sat Sep 09, 2023 12:30 pmNot trying to be contradictory, but I would have thought that a gradual descent and playing at a lower level for a few years would be much better for their mental well-being. I think we're addressing two separate issues here.daveisaclaret wrote: ↑Sat Sep 09, 2023 12:31 pmDeeney says the people in question were on holiday in Dubai over the summer, hard to see that as too taxing for their mental health.
What I'm referring to is players who "retire" in their early 30s (having been earning really big money) and then having no club, no other job to go and having to find a way of leading a fulfilling life. There's lots of evidence that a fair proportion of PL players struggle with aspects of life when they finish and don't find meaningful alternatives.

Re: Troy Deeney comment
It's neither here or there, it boils down to individual preferences & circumstances, whatever makes somebody happy shouldn't be judged against whatever makes somebody else happy. What works for Troy might not work for somebody else, Troy needs to be focussing on himself & let other people just get on with their own business.

Deeney must not care about the future generations of his family. Not like Henderson.

Re: Troy Deeney comment
Maybe, but who is Deeney or any of us to say what’s better for someone’s mental health? Maybe some players who have earned more than a lifetime’s wealth would prefer to live at home and spend time with their families enjoying a lifestyle they’ve earned.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Sat Sep 09, 2023 12:30 pmNot trying to be contradictory, but I would have thought that a gradual descent and playing at a lower level for a few years would be much better for their mental well-being. And talk of players doing a job they love; some footballers must love being footballers - others will be financially motivated, and I don’t really see a problem with that. Plenty of ‘normal’ people work for financial reasons rather than a love of their work.
Re: Troy Deeney comment
Andre Gray has dropped down the Leagues gone out to slum it in Saudi for £100k a week
Re: Troy Deeney comment
Being a pro footballer is not just a job though, it's a lifestyle, with strict regimes relating to fitness such as nutrition, sleep etc. and the idea that you are never 'there' but need to learn more, be better etc.. I dare say some are glad to get out of it once they've made their money and perhaps because they've lost that hunger/drive. Wives and family may also be a consideration.
Just listen to the way player's talk these days, and the hours that VK etc. put in. I could never do that. I preferred a life outside of my work.

Re: Troy Deeney comment
Makes a lot of sense that , my friends lad plays for Southend and loves it despite their off the field problems, so maybe he is the opposite, having said that he was offered a contract with a league 1 side but turned it down as he would have to take a 50% pay cut .

Ronaldo will be at Accy Stanley in the next few years then.
Re: Troy Deeney comment
Everyone is different and it is not necessarily about egos.
Being with wife and children regularly.
Not having the relentless regime of nutrition and training with early to bed. Away from home lots.
Skillset ideal for top league but you are past it but not really suited to lower league, where players don't expect your passes etc.
Being a target for lower league cloggers.
Lesser facilities and expectancy to play on with injuries.
If you just love your football then it won't matter where. You just want a game.
For others, it was their job and now its not.
