That is soooo not the point. The point is that it was a technical failure due to weak protocols that led to a total failure of the whole system. There has to be a fuss about it to get improvements made regardless of which team it affects.

Re: LiVARpool get the VAR footage
Having now heard the audio all i can say is what a car crash.
Way too much chuntering going on from multiple people around every second of the game, maybe if they shut up and only said something calmly they might come to the right decision.
Someone should have shouted "stop the game the goal is good" all we get is england in the background saying " i cant do anthing x3" quiet as a mouse into the mic.

Five years ago the linesman would probably have got it right, because five years ago it would have been considered level.Roger Mellie wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 7:19 pmPeople are losing their minds on this. 5 years ago it would’ve been a brief eye roll due to the fact a lino made a mistake. With VAR ( which PL clubs are paying £3-5m for! ) it’s on the main news and litigation is being threatened.
This is ludicrous.
Get rid. Now.

But VAR isn't a fantastic piece of technology. It's just a couple of blokes sat in front of a tele not even seeing the game close and in real time.bumba wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 3:46 pmVAR used correctly is a fantastic piece of technology that can eradicate cheating and get fair results, used wrongly as it is now and it is wide open to corruption and match fixing to benefit a select few.
VAR doesn't need scrapping, the system and people currently in place needs scrapping.
VAR is fantastic in rugby because it's transparent

I'm not sure why the guys in Stockley Park are also on-pitch referees and not specialist VAR referees. With this and the instance a few weeks ago where he was "backing up his mate" it's like there's too much empathy, too much reluctance to overrule the on-pitch ref, or stop proceedings. I don't think it's helping.
I feel bad for them. They're trying to be unobtrusive and keep games flowing but bad, rushed comms have let them down.
If there's a positive it's that in releasing the comms they've brought to light just how shambolic the system is.

Offside, Handball, a foul. There was human error, it happens week in week out. The real problem is the rules are so so so complicated now I'm surprised the officials get 99% of the decisions right.corporal jones wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 10:25 pmThat is soooo not the point. Re: LiVARpool get the VAR footage
Exactly...The audio is horrendous, like a bunch of over-excited kids shouting jargon at each other randomly. All that was needed was a rugby style "The on-field decision is offside. Please check whether the goal was offside or not" followed bt a calm, considered review of the images when the ball left the assisting player's boot.Superjohnnyfrancis wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 10:33 pmHaving now heard the audio all i can say is what a car crash.

After hearing this my confidence in VAR is now utterly shot . it needs binning and then a full review of practices and protocols carrying out before any reintroduction. Just cannot believe how terrible that audio is.

Pre VAR, the liner flags and we’ve no idea if he eventually scores or not.
That audio just shows what a shower of shite it is. Why are they all constantly talking as the game is going on. No need for any of that and it can’t help with clarity of thought.

Moving on, we can now expect VAR reviews to take even longer, while they check, double check, triple check and on and on.
Just get rid and let’s referee football in the stadium that it’s bring played. Like we did for over a hundred years. Mistakes will be made, but they will be genuine. And not compounded by technology that should eliminate said mistakes.

Good point. Not so very long ago, the ref and linesman didn't have mikes, the fourth official did nothing, and there was no fifth and sixth men at VAR. Was refereeing any worse when the only communication was waving the flag?arise_sir_charge wrote: ↑Tue Oct 03, 2023 10:58 pmPre VAR, the liner flags and we’ve no idea if he eventually scores or not.

I was gobsmacked when I heard the gibberish they were talking. No wonder so many mistakes are made on VAR. When you see and hear a VAR in Rugby it's very calm and methodical which is it how it should be.
I would love to hear the audio from the handball against Forest when our goal was disallowed, it would make interesting listening.

Can you imagine Liverpool taking legal action against the PGMOL because they missed out on the title or Champion's League qualification due to one point or even one goal.
Imagine a scenario where later in the season Liverpool trail by a goal going into injury time and a Berge-like goal is scored by Salah or a dubious coming together in the opponent's box, that's when this wrong will be righted.
And when that odd VAR decision is given in Liverpool's favour, there'll be a proverbial nudge and a wink given by the PGMOL towards Klopp.
So it's the opponent later in the season who I feel sorry for.. the Bournemouth, Luton, Sheffield Utd, Burnley or whoever it happens to be.

Was it Sheff U at Villa when the ball clearly crossed the line but the goal line technology wasn’t switched on? No game was replayed there.
I get this was a factual error but it’s not the first.
The focus should be on making sure it doesn’t happen again.

England getting stick for this, but the media fail to mention he was also on VAR when Burnley were denied a perfectly good winner against Forest, he was also on VAR when Onana flattened the Wolves forward. They don't add up to human error, but incompetence, and in any other walk of life you get sacked for it.
In a billion pound industry we cannot allow HIM to carry on. It should help his colleagues stop the ridiculous calls they make week after week. Accountability is the only way VAR will improve.

Re: LiVARpool get the VAR footage
VAR is a nonsense.
There are legitimate concerns about whether the technology is precise enough to provide definitive offside decisions in some circumstances.
Here is a quote from an academic paper published in 2022
“The frame-rate and resolution of the cameras used in VAR sometimes does not keep pace with the fast movements, meaning that sometimes the player or the ball is blurred."
It is obviously technically limited, and it's implementation is still prone to human error, so therefore I'm struggling to see the benefits in regards to offside decisions.
Marginal decisions in regard to handball are also ultimately subjective, involving as they do judgements about whether the offence is "deliberate", or whether the offender has made their body "unnaturally bigger".
It has obvious uses if the onfield officials miss dangerous/violent conduct. But, again, there is a subjective element in terms of judging intent, and endless repeated slow motion replays of challenges undoubtedly alter perception.
Given all the obvious flaws, it provides few positives. It does however have a massive negative impact on the experience of those who actually attend games in person.
Unfortunately football's governing bodies have invested too heavily in it's implementation.

That's only true because it is used to determine to the nth degree. Nobody called for that, we just wanted an end to the clear and obvious errors, of which there were many.Sgt. Pepper wrote: ↑Wed Oct 04, 2023 3:28 pmVAR is a nonsense.

I've argued before that they shouldn't be using lines on these VAR checks. If you cannot tell if a player is obviously offside with the naked eye, then the goal should stand.
We'll all have different opinions, but if you can say you thought he was off, BUT you can see why it was given, fans would be satisfied.
It's the disallowed goals, like Liverpools, that cause the anger.

It could put the pgmol out of business and good riddance to them. They’ve just had a shiny new building decked out and they can’t even be bothered to watch the match correctly.
Re: LiVARpool get the VAR footage
That is an excellent point Elizabeth. I said earlier that Darren England and his colleague cannot have been watching the match at the time the linesman’s flag went up. If they had we wouldn’t have had this cock up. They should be fired for this alone.
Re: LiVARpool get the VAR footage
I don’t think even Liverpool will think they can make a case that they were due a point in a game they lost 2-1 when the goal was disallowed at 0-0 in the first half and Liverpool were down to ten men. If it had been to equalise in the last five minutes maybe, but no chance otherwise.Superjohnnyfrancis wrote: ↑Wed Oct 04, 2023 4:40 pmI can see Liverpool taking legal action to recover lost prize money if they miss out on the title by a point as they were due one in this game.

It will be interesting what if any their next step is.
Re: LiVARpool get the VAR footage
But as with all these decisions it’s completely wrong to say, “we were robbed of a point”, “we were robbed of three points”
There would have been a kick off and from there the game would have been completely different. We got VAR because the big six managers couldn’t accept referee’s decisions. The others did but not as often and nowhere near as loudly. They get the limelight and always complained. So we got VAR. Now they’re not happy with that.
Every week people on here argue about poor refereeing decisions. Now they argue about poor VAR decisions.
What do we want because there will always be errors. Yes this one was a pretty dire mistake but it’s not the first and won’t be the last. We can’t celebrate goals anymore until checks are made some taking 4+ minutes.
So referee decisions or VAR? What do you want?
