Kevin Keegan
Entitled to his opinion, I happen to agree.

Re: Kevin Keegan
He'd love it if there were only male pundits. Love it.
Re: Kevin Keegan
For me it has nothing to do with gender, Karen Cairney and Andy Hinchcliffe can both be muted permanently for me.
Re: Kevin Keegan
There's a little more depth to what he said in that he's very supportive of the women's game and thinks some of the pundits are better than the men. He just doesn't like women pundits on the mens game as the comments are less relatable.

Presumably he also thinks that John McEnroe shouldn't commentate on women's tennis too, or perhaps Sue Barker should never have offered her opinion when Andy Murray was winning Wimbledon?

The headline is sensationalised. He said that female pundits are occasionally asked for their insights when they haven't had the same experience.

Me too.
I like the women when they give the inside detail and knowledge of the players. They can't do that for the men's game and vice versa. It's more than chatting about football.

Ex-players very rarely offer revealing and interesting insights into what it’s like to play football, well okay, they can be occasionally interesting, but they are relied on far too readily.
I’d rather listen to a football journalist that can articulate his (or her) thoughts.

Re: Kevin Keegan
keegan has a point. Not long ago nobody was bleating about lack of female pundits, nobody campaigned for them. the football pages now put the womens fixtures to the top (confusingly) so it looks like there's games on we might be interested in. But then you realise its not the mens game.
then the rest of the media have to hop on the bandwagon when they themselves NEVER uttered a word about the poor pay or coverage of the womens game previously.
Plenty of very good commentators of both sexes out there, and a lot of the women involved agree it is a different game entirely from their male counterparts, so keegan makes a valid point.

The media are trying slowly away to forcefeed people into liking women's football when some people aren't interested in it & don't like it, I keep well away from it because I think it's a men's sport & should remain that way.

same way they persist in trying to popularise American football over here, theyve been at it since early 80's but thankfully we have resisted the urge to soak that up. Money to be made though, so they will keep chipping away until they wear us down . At least its done at a leisurely pace, unlike the womens football where theyve just crow barred it into every possible slot on tv and radio.

It's probably a sign of my age I grew up watching men's football & that's all I know, I've tried watching women's football & I don't enjoy the spectacle in any shape or form but I could equally say the same if I witnessed men playing netball as an example.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2023 10:29 pmsame way they persist in trying to popularise American football over here, theyve been at it since early 80's but thankfully we have resisted the urge to soak that up. Souness when commenting on a men's game which was very physical said that he was enjoying it because it was a "proper man's game".Superjohnnyfrancis wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2023 8:54 pm

Does John McEnroe ever say something like “If I was playing her I would be standing 6 foot further forward and just hit really fast served at her”. Keegan doesn’t think a female commentator saying “if I was in that position isn’t as relatable as they have never been in that position, which is true.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2023 5:08 pmPresumably he also thinks that John McEnroe shouldn't commentate on women's tennis too, or perhaps Sue Barker should never have offered her opinion when Andy Murray was winning Wimbledon?

Re: Kevin Keegan
But at Wimbledon, the experience is similar. In football terms, a retired female player doesn't have the same experience walking out at Wembley for an FA Cup semi-final. She played her fixture at Bristol Rovers in front of 700 fans probably with less than basic media coverage and had to time off work to make herself available.fidelcastro wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2023 5:08 pmPresumably, he also thinks that John McEnroe shouldn't commentate on women's tennis too, or perhaps Sue Barker should never have offered her opinion when Andy Murray was winning Wimbledon?
So when they ask her, how do your prepare your mindset to play in a semifinal. It's not the same.
Re: Kevin Keegan
I remember Dion Dublin once being on a panel for women's football
One of his co presenters later said it wasn't right because he "didn't understand the women's game"

Re: Kevin Keegan
It is being forced. There are no women’ s sections for football as it is mixed in with the men’s and is piggy backing the men’s game. Having to have a female pundit on nearly every men’s match is ridiculous. I can’t agree with it being ‘men’s sport’ though. Women should be encouraged to be involved in their own game which is very different. It should also stand up in its own right.Jakubclaret wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2023 9:22 pmThe media are trying slowly away to forcefeed people into liking women's football when some people aren't interested in it & don't like it, I keep well away from it because I think it's a men's sport & should remain that way.

He’s certainly entitled to his views that he doesn’t like it. But inevitably he will get a backlash from most of the media as it’s the obvious angle for them to approach. It’s not a story without sensationalising him as a sexist dinosaur.
Not sure what he said was that bad - it’s just his view. It’s not like he said “football is a man’s game” which is of course both factually incorrect and pretty pathetic tbh.

Yes, it is, and I'm convinced they are told to describe their recollection of playing in the women's FA Cup as if it is of equal stature. The women's game is never downplayed now. It's the elephant in the room.
In twenty years, it won't be given the rise of the women's game, and this generation of female players will be in the studios

Re: Kevin Keegan
If anyone actually listens to the Keegan interview it’s actually quite reasonable the point he’s making . He states personally he doesn’t particularly like female pundits talking about men’s football as their own experience is vastly different . And it’s a very fair viewpoint, at no time does he demean women’s football .
The whole issue is women’s football is, ultimately it’s a massively substandard product which is almost unique in any sport . It needs to be encouraged as a stand-alone sport so can be judged on its own merits rather than piggy backed onto prem football .

And isn't women’s football (like most sports) stand-alone in that men compete against men and women against women?
Re: Kevin Keegan
I enjoy watching the England womens team, don't bother with Southgates crap.
Think it would be better if women were pundits on the womens game and men on the mens and same with commentary.
Brave of Keegan to say such a thing nowadays with the Woke cancel culture.
