Your lowest point as a Burnley fan
Re: Your lowest point as a Burnley fan
The Chris Waddle season.
Spent most second halves drinking under the stand as I couldn’t face the dross that was being served up. Only reason I renewed my season ticket was because my pal said what else would we do on Saturdays.
Then Stan came and the rest, as they say, is history.

Re: Your lowest point as a Burnley fan
It’s a strange one really. I started watching Burnley with 3 defeats in a row, 1970-71, a season that ended in relegation. But of course promotion wipes out the disappointment. The 3rd and 4th division days football wise were extremely low. But we always made a day of the away trips. It was the home games that hit you. Turf Moor with with a scattering of a 1,500 and not many more, so sad to see. Yes the football was low, losing to the likes of Rochdale, Hereford… et al!
But certainly the Bond, Benson, Buchan & Cavanagh were the lowest. For Brian Laws, I thought he was on a hiding to nothing, the treatment he, a fantastic Clarets player, received from our fans was a disgrace.
Following Burnley as been a rollercoaster of a ride, massive highs, even bigger lows.

New Year's Day 1987, the Orient season. Rochdale hadn't won an away game in the whole of 1986. Their third goal was such a disastrous piece of defending (Joe Neenan particularly culpable) that Burnley fans in the Longside laughed at it.
The next two home games were 0-6 Hereford and 2-5 Wolves, where we conceded 4 times in 5 minutes after half time (though two were disallowed).

Re: Your lowest point as a Burnley fan
I’ll echo after Stan leaving;
Started watching the Clarets in the mid 90s, thought we had missed our chance to go up in the Premier League - that it would never be done and that we were again going to be struggling to stay up in the Champ… the dream was over.
Also after the Newcastle game yeah when we were relegated in 21-22, purely for financial reasons.
Thought we had a chance that we’d be finished for a while.

Might be wrong with this one, but I think we played colchester on a tuesday night , mid to late 80's.
seem to recall a delayed kick off, or problems getting into the ground. it was pouring down , and we were eventually allowed in soaked and freezing. very tough 90 minutes indeed.

My father in law who is one of my best mates talks about the bad and good times between 80s and 90s, he went everywhere like hundreds if not thousands of others. Barnet away is one of his favourite chats.
Always be a Claret Big Dave.
My worst time was easy, I was at a devout rovers supporting school in 1995 when they won the league and we were relegated. Horrible times. I was heavily bullied but never did I not stand my ground as a Claret.

It has to be Newcastle semi final at Hillsborough for me because on paper we should have beaten them easily and if we had we would have given Liverpool a game .

Not low necessarily because we were still having an unbelievable season, but the feeling of sheer desolation when that Roman Pavlyuchenko goal went in will take some beating.

Re: Your lowest point as a Burnley fan
My lowest point game wise was the FA Cup semi v Newcastle, heartbroken as a kid, didnt think i would feel that bad ever again, how wrong was i? Getting beat at home v a 9 man Rochdale team who had one of our goalies on loan was the pits. Once Stan came in,things looked great for a while until the Bburn away 5 niller sullied that one. Cotterills 19 game period was unbelievably bad but enter the new hero Coyle, magnificent stuff until he buggered off. That didnt bother me too much untill i saw the replacement,i can still remember Barry Kilby looking like he hadnt slept for 3 days thinking how am i gonne sell this fella to our lot,i still shudder at that appointment

I’ve seen a lot of bad sides and players over the years but I’m still not quite over Dyche’s final season. That’s the only ever time I can recall when I started to loathe going to games.

So low that I didn't go on the Orient game. Sat in the Red Lion (with a fair few other Clarets regulars, it has to be said). Lowest point as a Burnley fan?
One of my lowest points is when people were seriously arguing that selling the club to 'Chalky' White, a de facto takeover by Colne Dynamos, was such a good idea.

So you chose to stay in the pub, instead of cheering the lads on while where was still hope? Seems utterly bonkers, especially if you were one of the 'few' who had actually gone through a turnstile at some point during that horrendous season.

Re: Your lowest point as a Burnley fan
Agree. That drive home was horrendous( and I wasn't driving). I've mentioned this before but on the way home we were passed by a coach full of Everton fans on their way home from Norwich. They had played earlier in the day and won 0-1, courtesy of a Pat van den Hauwe goal which won them the First division title. It was only a dozen years previous that we were competing and beating Everton on an equal footing in the first division. There it was right in front of us; the very top and very bottom of the football leagues. How the hell had it come to this?Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Sat Oct 28, 2023 10:04 amSame for me. Re: Your lowest point as a Burnley fan
I started watching the clarets the season after the Orient game so that’s out for me. It was actually after we lost at the Reebok when Coyle and Davis (my hero as a kid) had defected. It may seem weird as I know we have had much harder times but it was the lowest I have ever felt. I was so worked up about that game after Coyle and Davis ditched us and I just felt the players should have matched my passion on the pitch and they didn’t. With hindsight I know it’s silly now, but the rest of that season and then Englands horrendous World Cup in South Africa left me well out of love with proffesional football for a decent period of time.

Watching us drop out of Div1
I always thought we'd be there forever and improve the following year.
This impacted far more than tumbling down the league under the inept stewardship we had at board level.

Re: Your lowest point as a Burnley fan
I think there were three.
Around the late 70s/early 80s after the optimism of the Adamson era had ebbed away and it just felt like the world had moved on but the club hadn't.
Games during the 80s/early 90s before and perhaps more so after the euphoria of the Orient game had faded away during our interminable period in the lower divisions when it was just game after game of mediocre players trying hard but generally just not being good enough.
And upon hearing about ALK takeover and then reading about who had bought it and the terms of the deal.
Quite long periods of misery when you see it in black and white but still we always had bright spots like Ray Deakin or George Oghani or even Chris Pearce and his wiggle - all of whose play was entertaining if not necessarily likely to lead to 3 points.
And I'll warrant that we are the only club to have had a song, which featured an ironing board. It's things like that that made you proud to be Claret even in the dark days....

1991 Maidstone 1 Burnley 0. Played at Dartford - the ground where a shot off target went into someone's back garden. Maidstone went bust a few weeks later (probably a big longer, but that's my recollection).
