Price if a pint where you live
Re: Price if a pint where you live
I work in the NHS so I have to pay for my own Xmas do. It’s the same with police, teachers, fireman etc
Don’t have a problem with it. Can’t imagine the public would be happy if their taxes were funding a **** up.
I live in Whitkirk in leeds for the one suggesting I lived near the Hedley. My local is the brown cow which is a crap chain pub

Re: Price if a pint where you live
It’s a shame so many pubs are going bust but it’s no wonder. I go in them far less. Some chilled cans/bottles at home often looks a better option. I think for a Christmas do you just have to accept the stupid prices.

£3.70 for a very good real ale down here in Kent! Home of the expensive pint. Red Lion, Snargate, on Romney Marsh. Have seen Reedley Hallows on the pumps.

Greater Manchester. Slightly cheaper in the locals, say £4.50 a pint on average compared to the city centre which I'd say is about £6 on average. Have to think twice about going out.
I do most of my drinking in Burnley on match days. Half the price.

These day's I only ever have a drink when I go to watch Football so it's spoons for me, Accy Clarets for away games and the one in the town center when we're at home, I only drink Guinness or real ale and I'm a member of CAMRA so it's 50p off a pint when I pay making it around £2.10 a pint.
Re: Price if a pint where you live
Does anyone ever ask the price before they order at the bar? No one seems to, almost like it's not the done thing or rude.

Re: Price if a pint where you live
Just paid £5.20 for a pint of Moretti in my local village pub, however paid £6.90 in a “posh” bar for the same in Leeds on Saturday night probably because Luke Ayling and his Weeds chums were there as well, they can no doubt afford it on a regular basis. I can’t as I am a pensioner you know Didn’t go over and wish him good luck for the season .

New, low cost pubs irk me - mostly in old shops. They buy a firkin for about £130 to 140, get 70 ish pints out of it. Easy to calculate who the robbers are.

So they buy at £2.00 a pint? Don't you realise they have to pay rent, rates, heating bills, staff wages, and taxes, all while trying to make a profit? Hardley robbers in my opinion, unless you expect them to run their business for nowt while eating out of bins and sleeping rough.basil6345789 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 16, 2023 9:58 pmNew, low cost pubs irk me - mostly in old shops. Spot on with this. Pubs paying this sort of cost price for cask beer and charging circa £4 a pint are hardly taking the p!ss. Probably just keeping their heads above the water.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Fri Nov 17, 2023 9:22 pmSo they buy at £2.00 a pint? Traditional pubs/buildings are different from low cost "pop-up" bars in former shops - they're much cheaper to operate and maintain, yet charge top dollar.Clovius Boofus wrote: ↑Fri Nov 17, 2023 9:22 pmSo they buy at £2.00 a pint? Re: Price if a pint where you live
Out last night in Glasgow, paying £11.60 for a pint of Guiness and Joker IPA (brewed in Alloa and available in Tesco for £1.50 a bottle).
They were served in plastic glasses and we were also in the Glasgow University Student’s Union.
Couldn’t afford that regularly.
The OP mentions Wetherspoons. They’ve really upped their game and some of them are really good and affordable. Harrogate, Todmorden and Broughty Ferry as recent examples. The Mrs likes flavoured gins and they do a good line in there.
As for Christmas do’s in hotels I absolutely feel your pain. I actually thought they’d largely died out.

Re: Price if a pint where you live
Some establishments do hike prices to attract a certain clientele. However, I feel the breweries are over charging on the pretence of inflation, energy hikes, etc. About 2 year ago you could buy 4 bottles of standard ales in supermarkets for £5. It will now cost you £7 for the same. That is a 40% increase in 2 years.
Re: Price if a pint where you live
Went out last night with one of my sons. Short 15 minute train ride from Shrewsbury to Wellington, Shropshire to a cracking real ale/craft beer pub called the Pheasant.
Deya, Steady Rolling Strata £5.50 a pint and Verdant Lightbulb £5 a pint. Absolute bargain. My mate lives up the posh end of town and he is paying over £5 per pint for some insipid lager offering from Molsen Coors in a crap pub.

Re: Price if a pint where you live
They still have expensive overheads, as I stated in my post. Also, nobody is going to get rich running a bar if their cost price is £2.00 a pop. Most of these places, especially the good ones, are run on love, rather than any hopes of a prosperous early retirement.basil6345789 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 18, 2023 11:49 pmTraditional pubs/buildings are different from low cost "pop-up" bars in former shops - they're much cheaper to operate and maintain, yet charge top dollar.
Anyways, you pay your money and takes your choice. In my opinion, you can beat a small, quirky bar run by an amiable host who has a real passion for what they are doing.

Must have been a big increase - was 8.5p for a pint of bitter around 1968.

Honest John in Tod told me that when I took one of his rancid pints back. Said he wanted more of the Manchester-like customers!

Local rugby club is $6 for a 745ml big bottle - about 3 quid. Cheapest drinking by far!
Otherwise, a decent pint on tap would be $10 to $12 - 5 or 6 quid.

Re: Price if a pint where you live
In the town I live in it's quite touristy, ergo pricey. 5ish € at the local local Brauhaus for their own (excellent) Helles.
In Frankfurt it varies from around 4 to 5 € for a big brewery pint of Binding/Radeburg/HB/Bitburger etc.
Still much cheaper than when I was living in Altrincham mind..

Re: Price if a pint where you live
There’s a pub in our town in South Yorkshire where you can still get a pint for £1.60. A few yards away there’s a bar where it’s £6 for a lager.
All depends on your clientele I guess. I like both places, the cheap pub isn’t rough, just an old man type pub where they have horse racing on all day. Reminds me of Rosegrove.
