Late substitutions once again were baffling. An encouraging performance on the whole though, but we're playing catch up and it's results we need.

Trafford 8* - growing on me.. still a huge fan of the Kosovan mad man but I thought Traff was great tonight, much stronger on set pieces - minus one for the second goal.
Vitinho 5 - let Gakpo get in behind a few times in the first half but again didn’t have much help - did better 2nd half
O’Shea 7 - warming to this chap. He’s really grown into his position over the last 7/8 games or so.
Beyer 7 - better from Beyer tonight and kept Nunez quiet
Chaz 7 - Mr. Consistent this year, kept Salah quiet
Berge 5 - his worst game for us since Villa. Not the worst in possession but poor defensively
Brownhill 6 - average
Trésor 5 - wouldn’t have started him on the left, still needs more time to adapt because there’s a player in there
Odobert 7 - let him run at fullbacks! Silly to not start him on the left against Trent!
Amdouni 6 - some great, some not so great. I think it will click with him and Foster though and we’ll be laughing
Foster 5- toiled but struggled against the imperious VVD. Keep at it Foster

JBG 7 - changed the game when he came on and played really well.

Trafford - 8 - kept the scoreline down with a string of saves.

Vitinho - 5 - uncomfortable most of the game.
O'Shea - 7 - another decent showing and he's starting to get some confidence.
Beyer - 5 - some real risky passing
Taylor - 6 - did ok and saved an almost certain goal with a great last-ditch tackle on Salah.

Berge - 5 - got bossed most of the game. Needed another midfielder in there
Brownhill - 5 - as above

Odobert - 6 - when he's good he's very good. But we don't get him on the ball enough
Amdouni - 5 - could have set the tone for the game in the first mins with some great skill but made the wrong decision in a 4vs3. After that a non-factor and should have been hooked way way sooner.
Tresor - 5 - started brightly and showed some glimpses but yet again we are left wanting and wondering

Foster - 5 - virtually no service but did not do well when he did get it.

JBG - 4 - criminal miss

Other subs way too late.

For the first 65 mins we were chasing shadows. I don't know what the gameplan was but we appeared to be happy to defend and then try and pass our way out against a high press which that personnel were clearly not capable of doing.

After 65 mins we finally woke up and started to ask some questions. As bad as we were we should have drawn level - Gudmundsson has to hit the target minimum.

All that said we deserved nothing out of the game overall. We've not had a shot on target and I always felt Liverpool could up a few gears if needed. It was attack vs defence for a long time.

It's the manner of the defeat rather than the defeat itself. Very flat. Very accepting. I don't feel we can support having Tresor, Amdouni and Odobert in the same side in our position. That's more luxury that we can currently afford.

Trafford- 9 - thought he had his best game for the club.

Vitinho - 6- perhaps a bit passive for both goals but generally OK.

Taylor - 7 steady enough afternoon and showed some real steel at times.

Oshea - 8 - our best outfield player and dominant in both boxes when the chance allowed.

Beyer - 6 - a very poor first half in which he overplayed and was underpowered, followed by a more robust second half showing.

Berge - 5 - way off the required level of commitment for their goal and missed two excellent chances. Competed better in the second half bit that dynamism is the difference between being a contender for a top 8 move and not.

Brownhill - 6 - got stuck in but always limited in these games in a midfield 2.

Odobert- 7 - not a factor in the first half and didn't always do his defensive work but a real bright spark in the second and should have had an assist.

Tresor - 5 - nice feet and a couple of decent moments but they were too infrequent and he didn't help Taylor at all, and too often coughed up possession playing out.

Amdouni- 5 - one glorious turn in the first half before greed tool over. Apart from that as Tresor give or take a couple of flickers when we got on top after the hour.

Foster - 6 - clearly still someway short of his best condition but worked hard and showed, which is more than can be said of some colleagues.

JBG - 6 - generally made us more robust and helped us get a foothold, but he had to score his header.

Other subs - not on long enough- inexplicably.

Let's be fair, a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool is about par in any season and in the second half when we pulled ourselves together we were competitive. It was just a shame it took so long. The first half was unacceptable and saw a back four completely unprotected by a midfield 4 ahead of them, and the team exacerbating it by trying to take Liverpool on in a passing contest inside their own half and failing miserably.

The second half was better but we were fortunate not to be further behind before we finally jolted into action. The manager has to reflect on why for the second game in a row we've been appallingly passive for 60 minutes and perhaps reevaluate the number of creative players he is trying to squeeze into a struggling side, especially against the top sides.

Trafford 9* - not sure what else he could have done to help
Vitinho 5 - not good today
O’Shea 7 - competed okay
Beyer 6 - really poor on the ball
Taylor 7 - kept Salah relatively quiet
Odobert 7 - generally lively but wasteful in key moments
Berge 4 - way too passive tonight I felt, improved a bit 2nd
Brownhill 5 - struggled with their pace and movement
Tresor 6 - has an incredible first touch
Amdouni 6 - the nearly man
Foster 6 - put in a shift but struggled in the final 3rd

JBG 6 - gave us a bit more physicality

Got to take at least one of the many chances we created, whether the actual chances or the openings with a better final ball. First half was too passive and so was the start of the second, but we improved massively, so much so a point would have been earned.

Some tidy marks given there overall so encouraging for the future I think.

Just got to score those goals as always but think good performances against some of the top sides in the division bodes well for the future.

Tresor.
Maybe but he’s signed for more than a season.

I think he’d be best suited for us playing slightly deeper in the sort of Amdouni role and dishing it players hugging the touchline/running in behind. More of a ‘10’ role if you will

Trafford 9 - bar one poor pass that was a brilliant display
Vitinho 3 - couldn’t give lower. Just not good enough and doesn’t learn
Beyer 5 - playing silly balls when under a press
O'Shea 4 - not good enough
Taylor 6 - OK
Tresor 5 - offers nothing
Brownhill 6 - poor first better second
Berge 6 - same as Brownhill
Odobert 7 - played well in parts
Amdouni 6 - OK
Foster 5 - fed off nothing but looked good on the ball when he had it

Trafford 7 he stops shots (his job) distribution continues to be problematic. Fans new Graham Branch.
Vithinio 3 dreadful
Taylor 6 did ok
Beyer 4 poor again
O’Shea 6 Mr average
Brownhill 5 annoymous for majority of game.
Berge 5 total lack of bottle for their first
Oddobert 6 few runs but no end product
Tresor 7 some decent touches
Amdouni 4 never hits the target when it matters
Foster 4 largely annoymous.

A largely toothless performance summed up by the total lack of atmosphere for an evening kick off on Boxing Day until their disallowed goal where we thought we’d actually put some tackles in for 10 mins or so and have a go.

Trafford 7 - some really good saves but his distribution really is crap. Anything over 30 yards never goes where it was intended.
Vitinho 4 - that first half was absolutely rank bad. Liverpool's game plan was to exploit him, im surprised it took so long for a team to do this. The diagonal was catching him out, his passing was poor, his end product was poor, he dives in 1 on 1. I dont know how people dont see it, hes a liability.
O’Shea 8 i thought he was really good, tempted to knock one point off for the 2nd goal but thatd be harsh. He was doing the right thing but the touch was heavy.
Beyer 6 First half he got stuck in the trap of trying to play out at all costs hence the absolute horror pass that he got away with but on other occasions it ends up with him being stuck on his left foot having to punt one forward badly. I do think hed be better on the right or in a 3.
Taylor 7 Solid and was really setting the tone in the last half an hour stepping in and being really aggressive
Brownhill 5 i dont think hed recovered from the Fulham game. There was a moment in the first 10 mins where somebody ran off him and he actually looked injured when he was trying to catch them. Id be tempted to play cullen there against Villa
Berge 6 I thought his first half display was dreadful. The lazy sluggish version of Berge that i hoped wed seen the last of. Improved second half
Tresor 6 - First 5 minutes very good then went quiet. His first touch is absolutely wonderful. If we want an aggressive pressing team though, he cant play. Its a shame but we just arent in a position to have a player like him. We need to dominate possesion for him to be at his best i think
Odobert 8 - works hard defensively althpugh i thought the tactics were wrong first half. Him and tresor were too wide and it left Berge and Brownhill with too much ground to cover. Second half was absolutely tremendous the way he was beating numberous olayers and following it ulwith some good deliveries
Amdouni 5 - its getting tiresome. Some fantastic olay followed by absolutely garbage end product. Then going completely missing when we are under pressure. Again made no damlngerous pentrative runs.anyone noticed he never gets any tap ins or one on ones with the keeper..theres a reason
Foster 6 - not great but i thought the sudden shift in our performance was led by him. He seemed to get a hit of adrenaline and started being aggressive with their centre halves and pressing with meaning and intensity. This seemed to then give the centre halves more willingess to go direct into him which caused them problems

JBG 6 Should have scored but came in and ruffled some feathers.

Strange performance but i think one that could be a really good lesson for the players. If they arent controlling the game possession wise they have to find a way to cause problems and gain territory. It took them a while but they finally worked it out with some encouragement from thr crowd after the disallowed goal. They started to force mistakes just through a shift in pressing intensity and by being willing to go direct and attack the second ball.

This then gave got Odobert and Amdouni more of the ball and we really should have equalised with JBGs chance. Unfortunately Forests win makes it a terrible day for our hopes of staying up, its still doable but it looks like Forest are going to improve so we are probably going to need at least 33 points to stay up id suspect.

Trafford- 8 MOM. Very good game despite 1 scary pass & thinking he could possibly have done better for the 2nd goal - despite that we'd have shipped several more were it not for him. I still would have liked to see how Muric would've done this season but I'm resigned to the fact he's never playing for us again, for whatever reason.

Vitinho- 5. Love Viti, got run ragged today, but was on his own a lot.
O'Shea- 6. Decent enough performance. Nothing amazing nothing dreadful.
Beyer- 6. As above really. Put in a couple good tackles, more what I want to see.
Taylor- 7. Neutralised their right hand attack but to be fair they rarely went that way.

Berge- 5. Outmatched, struggled. Spurned opportunities.
Brownhill- 6. Also struggled but got about alright and tried to build play.
Tresor- 5. Still not seeing it with him at all. He can bring a ball under control, but can't then do anything with it.
Odobert- 7. Flashes of play, limited end product, he's a raw young winger so it's to be expected. Looked much better when he moved left.
Amdouni- 6. Couple good touches and moments but bit greedy again at times. Definitely prefer him with Foster alongside.
Foster- 5. Still doesn't look nearly as fit or sharp as before his absence, got to be patient with that after 2 months out.

Gudmundsson- 6. Changed the game massively but loses a point for missing the easiest chance to score he'll ever have. I thought that was 1-1. Has to do better.

Rest weren't on long enough, and were baffling, I've beat the drum for Larsen up front because of his pace, two footedness, eye for a shot and willingness to get in behind- today wasn't the time to do it, this wasn't like prior games where Jay was spent and we needed more mobility. We were 1 down, and we took off our forwards for converted wingers, Larsen should've done better with the chance gifted but it was just a weird time to make that swap for me. Redmond again looked lively but was barely on really don't know what's needing to happen for him to get more than 10 mins (including stoppages) and in his proper position out wide.

All in all....2-0 is on paper better than I expected going in, but not a result I'd be happy with. And once again, we're the least attacking 'attacking side' I've ever seen. 0 shots on target says so much- with a Dyche style defensive setup you understand that happening. We're allegedly an attacking side yet our attacking output has been woeful compared to other teams, and even if we're slowly ticking our shot count up the lack of end product is disheartening. Easy to say on another day we'd have scored those 2-3 chances, but on another day Liverpool would have scored 2-3 more, or another ref might not have deemed Nunez's challenge on Taylor a foul, etc. We showed more fight and drive after the 2nd disallowed goal, but we need to show that for the whole match, and more importantly, get chances on target.

I think we'll stay up....there, I've said it.

Given the opposition, I'd say that was our best half of football this season..and there was some dazzling attacking play..

First half was clearly absolute pants but we showed enough invention and grit to fight our way back into it. Lots to like overall though and plenty to be optimistic about.

Trafford..8.. Getting better by the game. Distribution utter sh1te, but we know that.
Vit..7 Holding his own in the prem
Beyer..6..Hasnt quite graduated in the Prem yet.
OShea...8 Physically effective..something we desperately lack.
Charlie T..8. Looked after Sala...Nuff said
Berge..6 poor..half hearted challenges gormless booking.and a wasted chance.
Brownhills.6 .out of his depth in first half...another wasted chance.
Odobert.8..massive talent...beats his man almost every time, and can shoot and cross.
Trevor.. 6 needs time..he'll get better.
Foster 6..not the right game for him..need to see him against a high line.
Amdouni. 7..talented lad..another who'll make a big impact before end of season.
JBG. 7
..

Didn't mean to quote that, was trying to copy the names and forgot to delete the quoted post!

Trafford 9 showed what Kompany saw in him
Vitinho 4 Really would prefer Roberts,
O'Shea 8 was good and solid tonight
Beyer 6 few dodgy moments but also some solid moments
Taylor 6 ok
Odebert 8 wow, that man can run
Brownhill 5 gave the ball away and was anonymous, again
Berge 6 booking held him back, not his best
Tresor 5 did very little.
Amdouni 6 tried but so lightweight
Foster 5 poor and offered little.

Gudmundsson 7 offered some zest but awful miss

First half awful Second half better but no shots on target and didn’t lay a glove on them. Gulf in class but there’s no way this side stays up. Toothless up front, weak in the middle and open at the back.

Trafford 7
Vitinho 5
OShea 6
Beyer 6
Taylor 6
Berge 5
Brownhill 6
Tresor 5
Amdouni 5 Flatters to deceive
Odobert 7 nice movement 2nd half
Foster 5 looked off it

JBG 6

Hard to keep enthusiastic expecting defeats every week. A limp team limping to relegation.

Trafford 8* MOM - outstanding dominance of his goal, only negative some questionable choices when being pressed hard
Vitinho 5 - did great getting forward only to waste it every times, and was run ragged by Gakpo, they clearly targeted him as the weak link, which I agree with
O’Shea 6 - OK but danced past too many times putting his keeper under pressure, albeit by world class players
Beyer 7 - some good interceptions
Taylor 8 - hasn’t yet taken Salah out of his pocket from the last 6 times he played him
Odobert 7 - poor first half against a stand in left back, excellent when switched over with his dribbling, passing iffy though
Brownhill 6 - overrun by their press and couldn’t stop the chaos between the lines
Berge 6 - as Brownhill
Tresor 7 - his best game. Fantastic feet and dribbling ability. Almost unlocked a door that has only been breached 16 times in 19 games. Just needs to shoot first time.
Amdouni 7 - like most of the forwards fantastic touch and feet, probably did a little worse than them for choices, dribbled too often
Foster 6 - both improved us but simultaneously isn’t match sharp and his passing was not there, he will benefit from games

Gudmundsson 6 - his usual chance creation which is the best in the team by far, but wasted our best chance of the game, which, if it went in, could have triggered a win

I felt Liverpool were “on it” tonight and we were thus up against it. It turned out to be a game of great set up play from us but wasted chances. We started better than them but missed a great chance after Amdouni set it up himself and they scored straight after. We were up against it then because they have gone 130 games without losing after winning at half time.

So it was a story of “not quite good enough at both ends” but this was against a world class team and I feel we are improving throughout and could yet threaten the 35 point possible survival level if we can get 7 wins and 3 draws in our last 19 games. Put it this way, teams at mid table and below won’t handle us offensively if we keep players fit and come at them like this.

Trafford 9 - we noticeably played longer from the back which took the pressure off him. Kept us on the game
Vitinho 5 - tough opponents and struggled at times
O'Shea 8 - a really good game and a couple of nice long passes. Another to benefit from mixing it up at the back and not solely going short
Beyer 5 - dropped a few clangers today and looked less assured than he has done previously
Taylor 6 - solid performance
Odobert 7 - great going forwards and gets you on the edge of your seat. Still learning defensively
Brownhill 6 - Stuck at it well but a tough role in a midfield two
Berge 7 - Also asked to an awful lot in a midfield two. Made some mistakes but is rapidly becoming a talisman througj whom we do our best stuff
Tresor 6 - growing on me
Amdouni 5 - still flatters to deceive and frustrates
Foster 7 - makes a big difference to how we play with his strength and industry. Feel like he has been slightly unfairly marked by some posters (no axe to grind, people have different opinions and that is fine)

Guðmundsson 6 - should have scored the header

Decent effort and better than Everton. Still some questions about tactics and selection- why oh why are we persisting with Amdouni who consistently is not learning? Some promising I prevents in others though- Odoberts getting more consistent, Tresor is improving, so is O Shea and Trafford is looking more solid.

Trafford 8 - some brave keeping tonight
Vithino 6 - did ok but struggled at times
O shea 8 mom - very solid and a physical threat I'm their box
Beyer 7 - shaky first half better 2nd
Taylor 8 - solid and led by exa ole
Tresor 6 - some real flashes of brilliance, but needs ore consistency
Brownhill 7 - worked hard tonight and battled hard
Berge 6 - awful furst half good second
Odobert 7 - quiet first half but a brilliant last 35 mins and out a chance on a plate for JGB
Amdouni 4 - usual paper tiger performance - he simply has to play in Tresor and then peelw.i to the middle instead of holding o and firing a shot wide. Garbage end product. I just don't get what he a ctually offers us.
Foster 6 - worked hard to close down bur fi Al product a bit short - understandably rusty

JGB 6 - would have been 7 but for the glaring miss at 0-1. Good performance though

Other subs not on long enough but for me after 50 mins I'd be looking Amdouni for Redmond or JGB and move Tresor central

1st half we started brightly then they scored and we lost it for pretty much the rest of the half, inviting unnecessary pressure exactly where we shouldn't be.

2nd half started well enough, then they scored but the rightly disallowed goal really galvanised everyone and we played really well after that. Deserved a point tonight, it's not as if we didn't have the chances, just got to be finishing them.

Trafford 9 for the saves, still need to fix up his decision making distribution wise. He can see the whole pitch in front of him so some of his choices are baffling. He's really improved here though so hopefully it continues.

Vitinho 5 tough night

O'Shea 7 did well tonight, strong and used the ball well

Beyer 5 still having too many kamikaze moments

Taylor 7 did really well against Salah, not for the first time either

Berge 6 should at least get one of his chances on target

Brownhill 6 outnumbered but stuck to the task

Tresor 6 improving and this was as well as he's played for us yet, his off the ball work is a bag of daz though, he's constantly having to be told where to go. Takes a decent corner.

Odobert 7 not really in the first half, hardly out of the second

Amdouni 4 his excellent turn and run followed by an abysmal shot summed him up. Some really nice touches, some equally bad touches.

Foster 6 still getting back up to speed but we're looking a better side with him in it

Gudmundsson 5 has to get the header on target

A difficult game against a top side who played the first half with practically a front 5 at times, constantly shifting across the line and overloading our defenders. We did well when we got our tails up in the 2nd half but you have to score when you're in those moments. If we had, I think we'd have stuck it out for a point.

Some people have just decided he isn’t good enough so give him poor marks no matter what - one of them.

Wouldn’t particularly call it ‘a shocker’ -

Again, defending 1vs1 against a big, physical wideman in Gakpo, fairly high line with Odobert infront of him first half who did nothing to help.

Some absolute world class passing from Trent/Alisson/VVD to Gakpo and yeah he did give up a few half chances but it’s far from a shocker for me.

Did much better second half (as they all did)

A 5 for everybody apart from trafford who I’d rate as an 8. Poor performance apart from a 10-15 min spell where they rallied but with JT pretty much MOM & 2 disallowed goals & salah rattling the cross bar & no shots on target & I can’t remember Allison having to do anything tells it’s own pitiful story.
