The End of Roverrrrrrrsss?

Post by Alanstevensonsgloves » Thu Dec 28, 2023 3:40 pm

As an Accringtonian I have always found our 'rhotic' pronunciation of the letter 'r' of interest, given how it was just us and Blackburn folk who did it, and how a few miles down the road from Acc in Burnley (sorry Bonleh) the 'r' is pronounced totaly differently.

Looks like the days of the rhotic 'r' are over (or should that be 'ovah'?)

Another letter that's disappearing is 'T, it's pronounced or rather not pronounced as a Hu from the back of the throat.

There used to be people that say KinG with an extended 'G'.

I know it's a song where perhaps anything goes but here's an example, at 1.08:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZV27FvZjq-o

I think the Oldham boys, Barclay James Harvest, often used that 'G'.

Worst accent i've heard in a while is the woman on "Great British bake off" ...the Brummie one.

I’m convinced she over emphasises here Brummie accent on purpose, much like Peter Kay over emphasises his Bolton accent, for example.

The difference being, Peter Kay is funny where as she’s just plain annoying.

The way Martel Maxwell emphasizes the "shire" in Lancashire (Yorkshire, Warwickshire etc) like "shyer" instead of softer like "sher" 🙄

I'm baffled when tv presenters announce the word draws, as drawers and drawing as drawring. Them in Bbn, they get on a buz, not a bus.

Most kids now speak like inner city gangstas. I'm proud of my rhotic Lancashire accent. Its authentic if nowt else.

My partner is a Bolton lass with a strong local accent, I can assure you that Peter Kay's accent is authentic. 👍

Not accents but noticed it's now mainly Santa Claus and not Father Christmas.

Bonleh? Isn’t that a little more Scottish?

I know we say Buuurnleh, but I’ve never heard anybody from Burnley pronounce it Bonleh? That’s seems a really weird way of spelling how our town tends to pronounce it.

To add, I think Bacup pronounce their R’s similar to Blackburn too. Not exactly the same, but there’s a definite roll.

Yep, and Haslingden too. Yet people from Rawtenstall speak differently to both.

On TV now, everyone says everythink instead of everything, anythink instead of anything and drawring instead of drawing.
Don't even start me on Ger-nabry and Ker- Knockaert

The most astonishing thing about the article is that the author thinks Blackburn is in East Lancashire. It's closer to the coast than to the Yorkshire border.
