Salford City

Post by ClaretsPadiham » Tue Jan 02, 2024 11:29 am

What has happened to Gary Neville & Cos project ?

21st in League 2, managerless. Not won in 10. Get hammered every week.

One of the biggest budgets and wage bills on the league.

Relegation out of the football league would be disastrous when they planned on being in the Championship next season. (A few years ago)

Ryan Giggs being heavily linked with the job but now could Mr Rooney who has just been potted be an option ?

They need a Steve Cotterill-type of manager.

The punditry from people like Neville makes football management seem so easy. Would love to see Neville manage Man Utd for several months to see his impact

Rooney sacking not much of a surprise, they have a real lack of chin this season.

The sacking of Graham Alexander for their mate Neil Wood I thought was a major mistake, Alexander was steadily building a team that looked capable of progression given time. Rooney being appointed would give Salford the star bounce, but after a couple of games would bomb and l’d expect them to be relegated.

From the bits and pieces I’ve read the following could be part of the problems:

Karen Baird stepped down as chairman.

Gary Neville taken a back seat.

A group of ageing players on good wages who can’t be bothered, the club is attractive for players to see out the end of their career whilst earning a few quid.

Due to the location of the club , can’t park near the ground, no boozers and on the doorstep of Man United, Salford City will never attract much of a fan base.

As for Rooney, John Eustace must have a rye smile of his face.

I have great respect for the city of Salford. But it's been tainted by this whole shambles.

I respect the Neville brothers and Paul Scholes in particular. We know Paul Scholes did give it a go in the club he loves but it was doomed to failure.

Genuine question: did the Neville brothers ever try to get involved at Bury FC during its demise?

I think the answer is no. Their mum was still secretary until close to their demise however I don’t think they wanted to get involved and why would they, the club was in financial turmoil due to the 2 previous ownerships, Day and Dale. Gary was always a United fan, he would have watched Bury when Neville was the commercial manager just as he would have watched the Clarets when his dad was at Burnley. He used to have a Walker Farrimond sponsored Volvo in those days

I remember back in the mid 90s and we played Bury at home. Neville Neville was in my bar pre match along with Phil Neville, who was just starting out at United and one of the "homegrown" players who were rolled out for European games to reach the quota

Salford City recently played home matches against 2 clubs that had yet to register an away victory in League 2 in Tranmere and Grimsby. Salford lost both games conceding 8 goals and scoring just 1.
One of the most improved teams in League 2 is Tranmere, gaining an impressive 19 points from their last 8 matches, who recently appointed Nigel Adkins as manager.

Salford played Accrington yesterday. They were very poor in the first half, 3-0 down. They gave it a go in the second but it still finished 3-0.

So do I! Seen them many times at Stevenage, just something about the whole "project" that I don't like. Hopefully they'll go and take Forest Green with them!

Alexander for their mate Neil Wood? You are forgetting that Richie Wellens followed Alexander with Gary Bowyer coming in after Wellens. Not far short of two years between Alexander and Wood.

This Saturday it’s

Salford v Forest Green

Neither has registered a win in their last 8 games.

The Neville brothers would not have been allowed to given they held 10% of Salford each.

Thanks Tony, that explains it, I only met Neville around 1984 so it must have been before that he’d worked at Burnley. I know Joyce Piclkles was there for years in commercial.

I don't have any ranked in the same category as Salford. Forest green haven't really ****** me off too much since they were stroud, and had a promotion run-in with merthyr.

Salford just don't belong. It's not as if we needed another league team in the Manchester area - they don't look after the ones that they had. If it had been Altrincham, then fair enough. They have a long history, founder members of the Vauxhall conference etc. Salford is more like Rushden and diamonds.

other than Salford, id rather see the back of Crawley.

Yes, actually, I can see your point, Tim. Altrincham would be nice to see in the league. And I agree about Crawley. Get rid of them. I didn't know FGR used to be Stroud. Good rock band from Stroud, incidentally: Pendragon.

They weren’t Stroud for long. They were Forest Green Rovers from formation in the 1880s and changed their name to Stroud as recently as 1989. It was only for a few years before they went back to the original name.

Neville was working on a project that was meant to rival the pools coupons but never really took off. He was quite arrogant and was put firmly in his place by Betty Davies, he asked her to make him a brew Betty's reply ended with the word off, Neville's face was a picture
