Coventry v Burnley 75-76 Season.

Post by gawthorpe_view » Tue Jan 23, 2024 12:10 pm

Burnley highlights start at 35 minutes.
Mick Doc and Super Taff giving Tommy Hutchinson a rough afternoon.
Very controversial third goal!
Enjoy.

I remember it well. The ball was up the other end of the pitch and Alan Stevenson was hanging on to it to ensure we got a point. And yet it was always unlikely that the game would go beyond the free kick.

Shocking decision from the linesman, similar to one on the Turf against Watford in 2005/06.

I'd travelled up & stayed at my Grandmother's in Rawtenstall the day before.
Went up to Haslingdon in the morning & got one of the coaches from there.
A couple of days before my 18th!

I wonder if Tommy Hutchison ever regretted not wearing shin pads?.
Two well taken goals from us and a crap decision from the lino who wouldn't look out of place with today's officials.

I miss goalkeepers wearing green shirts and team shorts and socks… and looking for all the world like they belong to the same club as the outfield players.

My love for the Claret V remains, the first kit I saw my team wear.

Bit of a colour clash for the Coventry goalie!

Geniuine question… why does the keeper clash? Are we talking for the colour blind?
I see no problem with the keeper clashing with his team-mates below the waste, where any part of the body can legally play the ball and all that matters is that a foul was committed by a member of the Coventry team, even in the rare situations where individuals cannot be discerned.

Very Garish clash of colours to me.

Agree 100%..........Some great reminders recently of the top-class players to represent our Club down the years.

One game I'd specially like to see again is the Burnley v Liverpool home win from April 1966.......Don't know if you can oblige, gawthorpe_view ??

Was that the 2-0 game where Ralph Coats scored that cracking goal after picking the ball up in his own half and then running right through with Ron Yates and Tommy Smith bearing down on him.

He got to the corner of the penalty then chipped a magnificent ball over Tommy Lawrence's head into the corner of the net.

A great goal, don’t think it was televised but would love to see that goal again.

That's the one........and my recollection is of an equally good first goal from Willie Irvine.

Ralph's goal was one of the best I've seen. He picked up a long ball from Sammy Todd just inside the Liverpool half and ran 40 yards before beating Lawrence all ends up at the Cricket Field End. Willie's early opener at the Bee Hole was an unchallenged header from about 8 yards out following a free kick from Alex Elder.

Would the 'League Liner' have been running for this game? I recall going to a few games on it, just can't recall if this was one of them.

No the League Liner didn't run for this game - there was no special or charter train put on, just the coach which left Burnley at 9.30 am and would have set you back the princely sum of £2.

I'll have a look but there's very few home games available from that era due to Bob Lord banning the TV companies from Turf Moor.

Yes I think that will be the problem unfortunately.
