Jimmy Anderson
Still taking wickets at 41 at arguably the hardest place in World Cricket to go and be successful as a seamer/swing bowler.
What an icon - arguably England/Britain's greatest ever sportsman, or at least in the conversation.

Re: Jimmy Anderson
If he was a Yorkshireman, there would already be statues and roads and sports centres named after him county wide, and the kaiser chiefs would have made a hit record about him.
Jimmy Anderson is my number 1 sportsman of all time. I can understand people claiming it’s Sarah storey, or Chris hoy, or Steve Redgrave or Valentino Rossi, but for me, the level he’s been at for such a long time, it’s Jimmy.

Re: Jimmy Anderson
His longevity is absolutely insane - not to mention that he actually had a few years actually out of the England side after his initial debut/ run of games yet is still just 9 wickets away from taking 700 as a seamer, at an average of 26.bobinho wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 4:54 pmIf he was a Yorkshireman, there would already be statues and roads and sports centres named after him county wide, and the kaiser chiefs would have made a hit record about him.

Unbelievable achievement.
The bloke is just superb and I totally agree that if he was from Yorkshire, or Surrey or whatever there'd be far more appreciation shown for him.
Re: Jimmy Anderson
This new 'town2turf' scheme should have involved statues for legends of the town. Anderson very much fits that category.
Anderson, Mcllroy, Dyche etc. We dont celebrate our legends anywhere near enough.

Agreed. Thats very much a Lancashire thing tho isn’t it? That lot over the border never shut up about themselves, so it’s hardly surprising we can’t get a word in.

Heard the Mayor of Burnley on the Tailenders podcast a while ago explaining how difficult it would be to re-name a street after Jimmy. Change of addresses, change of house titles, confusing the P.O. etc. etc. I sat there listening and thinking - "just build the bloody statue."
He deserves nothing less.

In more ways than one.
Apparently he’s been practicing his left arm spin and according to Bumble he’s very good.
Don’t be surprised if Ben Stokes at some point in the series tells Jimmy to give it a go !!
I was saying today I have no idea why we do not have a statue of him in Burnley.
It’s incredible that one of the best bowlers in the history of cricket and the best English bowler ever is from Burnley (and went to my school !!)

And yet they managed, a few years ago, to change the road name outside Turf Moor from Brunshaw Rd to Harry Potts Way, so it isn't that difficult, especially if they use it on a road with no houses such as Centenary Way. Also, Royal Mail sorting is done by computer nowadays so it would be a simple matter to change a postal address!Lord_Bob wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 9:47 pmHeard the Mayor of Burnley on the Tailenders podcast a while ago explaining how difficult it would be to re-name a street after Jimmy. Re: Jimmy Anderson
Changing street names can be difficult. When the stretch from the Wellington to the Park View was renamed Harry Potts Way in 2001, the only occupants were the bookies and Burnley FC so it was easy.Lord_Bob wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 9:47 pmHeard the Mayor of Burnley on the Tailenders podcast a while ago explaining how difficult it would be to re-name a street after Jimmy. Been mentioned previously on this thread, rename Centenary Way. I learned recently that even Tesco's address is Finsley Gate so there would be no issues.
And yes, get the statue too.

Not sure about Jimmy’s 80’s streaked hair though? Having said that he looks as fit as a butchers dog and hope he can take wickets when the pitch becomes a little more lively. Top man.

To be playing to that level, away in India at 41 shouldn’t be possible in this modern era of super fit young athletes. Agree with all the above, Burnley should be making more of it.

Dispatched Jaiswal & Rohit to start India's 2nd innings.
Seriously running out of superlatives for Burnley's finest - if only it was swinging last summer, we'd have battered the Aussies!

The Full Councill spent a considerable amount of time at their December meeting formulating a strong letter to be written to the Prime Minister regarding a ceasefire in Gaza .. this will cause the Israeli leadership to change course when they get wind of this, I'm sure !!Lord_Bob wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 9:47 pmHeard the Mayor of Burnley on the Tailenders podcast a while ago explaining how difficult it would be to re-name a street after Jimmy. Fantastic, stuff like that can really become a hotspot for people visiting the town. Might be being greedy but i think there should be statues of various people in both the town centre and around the ground.claptrappers_union wrote: ↑Sun Feb 04, 2024 9:27 amThis should be the design of the statue. Its poor that it hasnt already been done but its probably something that has to be led by the people of the town to put pressure on the council/football club.
Anderson and Jimmy Mcllroy are the 2 obvious ones but theres a lot more that are worthy of one. Im 32 so in ny generation Dyche is probably the one that stands out above all others and maybe even Rodriguez as someone that comes from the town and became an international.
Im sure some of the older posters would be able to make some better suggestions as well.

I'm not so keen on statues of specific footballers because of the opinion of who is most deserving, but if I were to have one in Burnley, I'd like this moment to be represented near something commemorating the 1960 Champions as well.

Show me one photo of Jimmy at Arsenal. He spends lots of time in London but i have never seen him there or heard of him visiting.
He was a massive Ian Wright fan at school. While working in our ticket office and having a ST at Burnley with the rest of his family.
He is shown nearly every week on TV cameras watching Burnley when the cricket allows.

Ronnie O Sullivan’s not even the greatest ever pub games “sports”man. That was Billy Arkwright who won the east Lancs dominoes title 14 years in a row.
