When I get back to my small flat
I want to hear somebody bark...

There's actually plenty of meaning in that song, even though it sounds like nonsense lyrics.

Nearly all lyrics are inane. We attach deeper meaning to them because of our emotional attachment to the music.

Oh, and Bob Dylan didn't deserve the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Top tune is 'I Want a Dog'.

'Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak
Somewhere in this town'

At the prison, perhaps?

Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no

Beware of wh0res who say they don't want money
The hell they don't
What they mean is they want more money
Much more

So now we're on a death trip, listen to the blood drip
Oozing from a curled lip, ever thought of dying slowly
Ever thought of dying totally unholy.
Someone's trying to fool us, maybe it's your daughters
Can you hear the walrus offering a sad solution?
He's calling out for teenage revolution
And can you think of one good reason to remain? To remain? To remain? To remain?
To you afficionados, fooling with bravado
Keep me on my guard-o cause a consciousness explosion
It's getting difficult to keep my mind in motion.
Images of sunshine, please to make the words rhyme
Let me die in eight-time, let me write a tale to no one
Let me write a tale to make you think you're someone
Can you think of one good reason to remain? To remain? To remain? To remain?
We'll grow sweet Ipomoea to make us feel much freer
Then take a pinch of Schemeland and turn it into Dreamland
'Softly Lautrec' - she whispered in awe
'Build me a picture of children at war'.
We'll grow sweet Ipomoea to make us feel much freer
Then take a pinch of Schemeland and turn it into Dreamland
'Softly Lautrec' - she whispered in awe
'Build me a picture of children at war'.
We'll grow sweet Ipomoea to make us feel much freer
Then take a pinch of Schemeland and turn it into Dreamland
'Softly Lautrec' - she whispered in awe
'Build me a picture of children at war'
'Softly Lautrec' - she whispered in awe
'Build me a picture of children at war'
'Softly Lautrec' - she whispered in awe
'Build me a picture of children at war'.
So now we're on a death trip, listen to the blood drip
Oozing from a curled lip, ever thought of dying slowly
Ever thought of dying totally unholy
And can you think of one good reason to remain? To remain? To remain? To remain?

Steve Harley is a brilliant lyricist and one of my favourite artists ever seen him many times sadly he's unwell but his lyrics will for ever remain as some of the best ever written
Pick the bones out of the above
Death trip Steve Harley.

Oasis.

She's electric
She's in a family full of eccentrics
She's done things I've never expected
And I need more time
She's got a sister
And God only knows how I've missed her
And on the palm of her hand is a blister
And I need more time

And I want you to know
I've got my mind made up now (mind made up now)
But I need more time
And I want you to say
Do you know what I'm sayin'? (What I'm sayin')
But I need more
'Cause I'll be you and you'll be me
There's lots and lots for us to see
Lots and lots for us to do
She is electric, can I be electric too?

She's got a brother (a brother)
We don't get on with one another
But I quite fancy her mother
And I think that she likes me
She's got a cousin (a cousin)
In fact she's got 'bout a dozen (a dozen)
She's got one in the oven (the oven)
But it's nothing to do with me

And I want you to know
I've got my mind made up now (mind made up now)
But I need more time
And I want you to say
Do you know what I'm sayin'? (What I'm sayin')
But I need more
'Cause I'll be you and you'll be me
There's lots and lots for us to see
There's lots and lots for us to do
She is electric, can I be electric too?

Can I be electric too?
Can I be electric too?
Can I be electric too?

Marc Bolan
Stacey Grove

Stacey Grove he's a roaming prophet of mine
Hat full of wine
Stacey Grove he's a roving catcher of skies
Forecaster of eyes, so no lies

Dungaree dome is decked like a pagan temple to Zeus
He drinks acorn juice

Roasting his feet by the furnace of peat
He roars at the boars who massively sleep at his feet

Antelope head his beard skylark red
Is tucked 'neath the good of his summer sun hood
And now that the gate of his evening is late
He sits on a log picking ticks off the back of his dog

Oh he's a nice cat

That ******* "weekend" song by a generic "indie" band that was always on radio x last year

Ooh yes a dead edgy indie band droning on about the weekend to the usual sounding generic indie guitar
Wow!

Ha ha, my pet hate.

How about:

'When love walked in through my door
That familiar feeling I'd had once before'

Not that familiar then. Or:

'Romeo, you nearly gave me a heart attack'

If only Shakespeare had thought of that.

I missed that. Oh dear!

Marc Bolan rightly mentioned on this thread.

I like the music primarily, but good, musical, lyrics can enhance that. The art seems to be to strike a lyrical chord with listeners so that they can generate their own meaning to each song.

I liked Mark Knopfler's early efforts as each song was a story but then, as he was contracted to produce more music, he just found some guitar riff and added 'inane lyrics'.

I was feeling kinda seasick
The crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray

Son of my Father...

Mama said to me we gotta have your life run right
Off you got to school where you can learn the rules there right
Be just like your dad lad
Follow in the same tradition
Never go astray and stay an honest lovin' son
Son of my father
Molded, I was folded, I was preform-packed
Son of my father
Commanded, I was branded in a plastic vac'
Surrounded and confounded by statistic facts
Tried to let me in but I jumped out of my skin in time
I saw through the lies and read the alibi signs
So I left my home I'm really on my own at last
Left the trodden path and separated from the past
Son of my father
Changing, rearranging into someone new
Son of my father
Collecting and selecting independent views
Knowing and I'm showing that a change is due.
Son of my father
Molded, I was folded, I was preform-packed
Son of my father
Commanded, I was branded in a plastic vac'
Surrounded and confounded by statistic facts

I got my head checked
By a jumbo jet
It wasn't easy
But nothing is
No

When I feel heavy metal
(Woo-hoo) And I'm pins and I'm needles
(Woo-hoo) Well, I lie and I'm easy
All of the time but I'm never sure why I need you
Pleased to meet you

Allegedly (according to Bill Drummond of KLF) they wanted Dolly Parton but got the names mixed up and asked for Tammy. They didn’t realise their mistake until she turned up for the session but they went ahead anyway and were more than happy with the results.

If you really think the lyrics to 'Too much love will kill you' are inane then you need to do some more critical thinking frankly.

More likely you're just being wilfully ignorant.

Mau Mau starter ching ching da da
Daughter daughter dumpling data
Pack and pick the ping-pong starter
Carter Carter go get Carter
Perigeeeeeee
Open stick and delphic doldrums
Open click and quantum data.

From Sky Saw by Brian Eno.

Eno is quoted as saying that the lyrics don’t matter because nobody listens anyway so he just chose words for their alliterative rhythm. Sky Saw is all about the amazing guitar effects anyway.

We'll get some overhead lifters and four-barrel quads, oh yeah
Keep talking, whoa, keep talking
Fuel injection cutoffs and chrome-plated rods, oh yeah
I'll get the money, I'll kill to the money
With a four-speed on the floor, they'll be waiting at the door
You know that ain't no ****
We'll be getting lots of tit in Greased Lightnin'

We'll get some purple fringe tail lights and 30-inch fins, oh yeah (Ooo)
A Palomino dashboard and duel muffler twins, oh yeah (Ooo)
With new pistons, plugs, and shocks, I can get off my rocks
You know that I ain't bragging, she's a real pussy wagon
Greased Lightnin'

Can you read these lyrics without singing them in your head?

Anything by Marc Bolan. Some decent tunes, but lyrics, my god!! Inane and then some!
Also;
I'm sure I once read a quote from Bowie saying he (Bowie) had a habit of cutting up the editorials from magazines and Sunday supplements and rearranging lines until they rhymed or fit the music.

Any song that mentions moving mountains or swimming deepest seas or taking stars out of the sky for the one they love.

Pretentious rubbish.

Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'Cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again
Oh, no

Mcarthur Park ... Donna Summer (Richard Harris spoken version more fun though)
Richard Harris didn’t speak it bud, he sang it. Unless he did another version I haven’t heard.

I know Ian ... sort of what I meant ... lets face it, his singing was more "Musical speaking" than singing though 🤣

Steve Harley is a brilliant lyricist and one of my favourite artists ever seen him many times sadly he's unwell but his lyrics will for ever remain as some of the best ever written
Pick the bones out of the above
Death trip Steve Harley.
Love Come up and See Me Make me Smile. For years I didn’t realise it was a brilliantly sarcastic side swipe at his band for ousting him. There ain’t no more, you’ve taken everything, for only metal, what a bore.

Telegraph Road is superb as a story.

I give you Little Richard …

Wop bop a loo bop a lop bom bom
Tutti frutti, oh rootie
Tutti frutti, oh rootie
Tutti frutti, oh rootie
Tutti frutti, oh rootie
Tutti frutti, oh rootie
A wop bop a loo bop a lop ba ba
I’ve always considered that a first class prize winner for appalling lyrics. I was gonna mention it till I saw your post.

I always liked it but he did need a female backing to sing the high note at the end. I’d actually forgotten Donna Summer did it. Incidentally she did a good version of State of Independence by Jon and Vangelis. Now Jon could write some ‘interesting’ lyrics. Accrington’s finest once said the sound of the voice was more important than the lyrics, which is why that work of genius Close to the Edge contains totally impenetrable lyrics (but it still sounds amazing).
