Maatsen interview in Guardian
I don’t think there was the remotest chance that he wanted to come back to Burnley.

Re: Maatsen interview in Guardian
A link would be good. Agree, and also that signalled Tella’s intent. Maatson said around mid season he would be more likely stay if his good mate Tella was going to be with us next season….Burnley Ace wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 2:29 pmI don’t think there was the remotest chance that he wanted to come back to Burnley.

Fair enough, Dortmund or Burnley - not the hardest choice in the world for a non-Burnley fan.

My plan was to stay at Chelsea,” Maatsen says.
There he said it, he didn’t want to return here, hopefully stops posters keep posting nonsense about us not trying hard enough to get him back.

Maatsen doesn’t lack self confidence!
Not necessarily a bad thing though?

Let’s face it he was never staying unless utterly desperate. We got a great yr out of him, and he developed as a player and has moved on up . Good alround .

Made the right decision, it would have been a terrible move joining us

He's starting in the champions league tonight with a good chance of getting through to the quarter finals.

True, although I'd probably say it was harder than it actually was in reality

There you go never wanted to stay, and I'd suggest that neither did Tella.

It’s not just the player or his registered club but agents play a particularly and increasingly significant part in any players contract and eventual transfer

Matt Williams said that Tella wanted to sign in one of his interviews after the Jan transfer window shut.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 9:53 pmThere you go never wanted to stay, and I'd suggest that neither did Tella.

Williams also said VK will be the best thing that has happened for BurnleyCoolClaret wrote: ↑Thu Mar 14, 2024 7:12 amMatt Williams said that Tella wanted to sign in one of his interviews after the Jan transfer window shut.
When he says stuff these days it's just Pace and VKs words coming through his mouth.

Re: Maatsen interview in Guardian
Maatsen is a Chelsea player on loan at Dortmund enjoying success in the Champions League. I think a mite of common sense suggests that no matter how he felt through last summer, there's zero chance of him saying he wanted to join us permanently.

Re: Maatsen interview in Guardian
Take away the kompany factor(last season) for a lot of young players there’s not much of a pull to come to Burnley. You only have to look at the players we signed under dyche for this. Next season could be another tough one in terms of recruitment if we balls it up again.

Re: Maatsen interview in Guardian
I think Maatsen and Zaroury on the same wing was too much for many championship teams last season, especially with the pace and ability of Tella through the middle/wide right. We have not really replaced that this season.
Re: Maatsen interview in Guardian
Linked with Bayern. At the moment he looks nailed on to play consistently at the highest level. Some Burnley fans would still say he's not good enough for us.

Re: Maatsen interview in Guardian
Good luck to him. Last summer I felt we were too ambitious in thinking that our manager would get some big hitters over the line, because that is what he did the year before, relative to the division. Trouble is, in the EPL that higher standard of player has many options.
When we look at the ones who got away, like Cole Palmer, Ian Maatsen, Lukebakio etc, I do wonder if aiming too high was an error, rather than, say, Fofana, Esteve or Assignon who would all have improved us back in August, using them as an example, and if we had signed that calibre earlier (not world beaters but improvements) I reckon we would have stayed up.

Re: Maatsen interview in Guardian
If this was so cut and dried, why didn't we just move on early in the summer rather than apparently holding out for him with a crazy last minute bid?
Not getting in two decent fullbacks in the summer was unforgiveable
