Thinking back to yesterday’s winner for Man Utd. Should a player who celebrates a goal by whipping his shirt off for a few seconds be given a yellow and as we saw yesterday then potentially sent off.
He didn’t foul anyone or swear at the ref.
It seems that yellow cards are thrown around so easy these days. Surely celebrating a goal like yesterday shouldn’t result in being sent off. What is wrong with taking the shirt off? Is it worse than celebrating in front of the opposition fans for instance?

It's to keep the sponsors happy. Every camera in the ground is on the player who has scored the goal, and the sponsor pays a lot of money for their name to be in the limelight too. If the shirt comes off then the logo isn't visible.

Running into the crowd or taking your shirt off should never ever be a yellow card

There are far more deserving incidents that I would insist on a yellow:

Keeper flops to the floor for no reason other than to waste time (warning, then yellow)
Player who shoves an opponent into advertising hoardings should be an automatic yellow every time
Sliding in with studs showing on a goalkeeper

It was banned because players were taking their shirts off to show political and other slogans.

Instead of getting excited about whether or not it should be banned, why not explain to the managers what the rules are, and let them give their players detailed instruction in how not to take their shirts off? Surely it isn't hard.

It was rightly banned to stop players making "statements" whether political or otherwise, but I also think there needs to be a curbing on some of the more outlandish celebrating. Coaches, subs, youth players, all invading the pitch to pile on the goalscorer is becoming ridiculous and the amount of time it all takes never gets added on. Celebrating goals has always been an intrinsic part of the game and don't get me wrong, I hate VAR because it's spoilt a lot of that, but it just seems all this running to the dugout or subs running on and mobbing the goalscorer has become daft. (Imo)

It’s also seen as a sign of disrespect to the club - the player wants to make it about them, show off their chest or whatever. Should definitely be a yellow.

You can't be serious. I can't think of anything more potentially dangerous. If I'm in the crowd with grandchildren, (who tend to be near the front), the last thing I would want is a player piling into us and the crowd surging forward.
The crowd should stay in the stands, (and if the encroach on the pitch they get a significant ban.
Likewise players should stay on the pitch.

I thought the law was also related to wearing the correct attire at all times when on the pitch but may be wrong. The problem is, where do you draw the line? Shorts off and windmilling around the head (windmilling the shorts!)? Easier if players just don't undress during games, it's not something I've ever had the impulse to do when playing football.

I'd like to think a little bit of discretion could be applied in these instances. But then I remembered there is very little, if any at all of it, left in the game of football. I was surprised at how much time was played after the goal was scored.

There was a game in Italy last season where a striker scored and took his shirt off then got a 2nd yellow and sent off for it.... VAR then reviewed the goal and disallowed it for offside

Unless you've been given permission to leave the playing area then presumably you are classed as an active player.
