Reflects poorly on Southgate and adds to his reputation that he doesn't make picks based on form.

Frankly I'm amazed that any genuine Burnley fan can't see this as a positive.
And for those who don't understand why he may be in the squad: he's not been plucked from the ether he's been in the England system for years, and that is because he is/has been very highly rated.

Im pleased for Trafford but it adds to my worry that we will lose him to a Premier League team if we go down. I accept we're only likely to hang on to a talent like Trafford for two or three seasons but it would be a massive blow to lose him so quickly and before we see the best of him.

We nurture a talent then sell them on.

Not really because if England are to succeed and win a tournament in 2024 they won't do it with Trafford in goal.
We're all England fans too.

Re: James Trafford England call up
Two crucial points:
1. Fantastic for James, warm congratulations, reflects well on Burnley, and shows how well regarded he is, including by me, even if I would have chosen Muric this season. I have no doubts he is the number 1 heir apparent, should be for us and for England. Ahead of Ramsdale in due course.
2. Statistically, on merit, for the benefit of CoolClaret, this is an upgrade for the senior squad. On goals prevented vs expected, via Opta, Trafford this season ranks higher than the 30 year old Johnstone (though worse than the 30 year old Wes Foderingham). Wouldn’t surprise me given his age if he goes to the Euros though why Pope was frozen out before injury beggers belief (though that is only because that fool is in charge)..

xG, xG differential and xG prevented/expected is good to look at for some trends - to try and use it as quantitive metric for deciding on goalkeepers ability with such small differences like that is a bit silly.CrosspoolClarets wrote: ↑Sun Mar 24, 2024 9:43 pmTwo crucial points:

Final comment on this -
If JT just so happened to play for another club and had performed similarly then no doubt some of the posters on here would rightly be questioning Southgate for the call-up.

Re: James Trafford England call up
Southgate will probably include Henderson and Phillips in his Euro squad so he may as well chuck Trafford in as well, and leave three better players at home.

The main football analytical advsiors such as DribLab tend to disagree.CoolClaret wrote: ↑Sun Mar 24, 2024 9:48 pmxG, xG differential and xG prevented/expected is good to look at for some trends - to try and use it as quantitive metric for deciding on goalkeepers ability with such small differences like that is a bit silly.
Also, when we look at the table, it makes sense when we see who is top. Of course, there are other factors, like distribution, but Trafford is better than Johnstone in this key area for keepers (though worse than most of the EPL).
Such a shame though that we have to pull these stats out to support our young keeper from attacks from his own club’s fans (albeit a small minority) on what is probably the proudest day of his life. Don’t think anyone is arguing he is (yet) ready to replace Pickford.

This should come as a great boost in confidence for young Trafford but before you outraged England "fans" get your knickers in a twist he won't be in the next squad, he is available in this break to sit on the bench rather than GS call another keeper in at late notice.

& no you can't use data to make quantitive statements like that. There's a lot more than that, that goes into evaluating a goalkeeper.
Re: James Trafford England call up
Fingers crossed!
Re: James Trafford England call up
Southgate often picks players on how they do for England instead of their clubs. Look at Pickford and Maguire when their form dipped. He is already in the fold. Good experience for him but the keeper we had playing for us last weekend is still the keeper we should have started the season with. This selection Is nothing or little to do with his club performances.

The posts undermining Trafford on this board as opposed to nurturing him probably in the region of 10 to 1.

He’s had a couple of very good performances, but has had a few poor performances, too. Overall, he’s been just about OK.
I hope he has a really good experience with the senior England squad, though.

What do you find strange about this? It has happened a few times in the past where the u21 keeper has been called up to cover as 3 rd choice for experience. He isn’t going to play so no harm done only positives to this for him and hopefully us.

Absolutely deserved.
Said he would go to the next big tournament with England months ago and got ridiculed by the usual (and some now departed) posters.
He’s going to be the next England keeper post T Rex arms.

Ha, you didn't really did you ?
Those who have had an agenda since the opening day line up was revealed aren't going to chance tact now and be pleased for him and his confidence.
Still at least there is no agenda towards him on here as we are told.
Re: James Trafford England call up
Fair play JT, it's a surprise but any Burnley player getting into the England squad is a huge deal. Perfect timing for him as well, as I'm sure his confidence was hit when Muric started last week.

Is he the 3rd best English keeper about.....no!
Does he deserve to be in the England squad......no!
As an England fan do I want him anywhere near the England squad yet......no!
Did our last game not show you it wasn't an agenda but people calling it out for what it were and that we've relegated ourselves through persisting with him?

One for the future and I am sure he will go on to be a first class keeper. Only time will tell whether being thrown into the PL well before he was ready has helped or hindered his development. Hopefully this will help his confidence. His selection is a good thing however you look at it.

Good for experience and confidence to train with the England Senior Squad.
He is the Engand No 1 u 21 keeper for a reason. He is a very good keeper and will be another "Pope" in a season or two.

Re: James Trafford England call up
David James, former England goalkeeper, was predicting a call up before the latest squad was announced. He didn't have Ramsdale in his three on the basis that he wasn't playing for Arsenal and, of course, Southgate always picks players in form.
