Aching feet advice

Post by Colburn_Claret » Wed Apr 24, 2024 3:48 pm

I do a lot of walking, 5 to 10 miles most days, longer on a regular basis.
I have suddenly developed an ache under the ball of my left foot. It goes warm and starts tingling which spreads to my toes. This can appear and then disappear during the same walk, but is starting to get worse.
Has anybody suffered with the same problem, who can tell me what it is, and hopefully how I can remedy it.

I'm doing the C2C in June, and I don't want this to spoil the occasion.

TIA

How old are you? Are you walking in walking boots?
I can’t walk at moment as I have torn my meniscus. However, I had something similar a few years ago and I think it was related to my footwear.
I have two pairs of Meindl walking boots and was walking stages of the Shropshire Way. 12-14 mile full day walks with several hills.
In the Autumn and Winter I was wearing my sturdy leather 3 season boots. In the Spring and Summer I wore the fabric boots with a more forgiving vibram sole. This second pair of lighter boots gave me problems under ball of my left foot too but no tingling.
I puzzled with it then switched to my “winter” boots with stiffer soles and it went away.
It could have been a coincidence, however since then I have rarely worn my summer boots.
Have you tried different footwear?

Sounds like you are describing Metatarsalgia from the symptoms you are suffering from. But could also be early signs of arthritis or tight fitting shoes. When walking long distances make sure shoes are cushioned which acts as a shock absorber. You can always buy a pack of large cotton wool pads from Boots and place 2 in sole of shoe which works for me.
Rest and soak feet in iced cold water to relieve any swelling. Good luck.

I have a similar complaint in Mortons Neuroma, I put it down to age and will get a half size bigger footwear from now on.

A young 66.

I had a pair of Berghaus boots that fit like a glove, sadly they had to go as the soles of the heels were nearly worn away.
I bought a pair of Scarpa 2 months ago, after trying lots of options. They were never going to be as comfortable as my old boots, but were fine. The problem didn't start with the new boots, but about 6 weeks, and many miles later. I suppose it is possible that the boots are responsible, but my gut doesn't think so.

One of those little massage guns can do wonders, few minutes on the relevant area can work wonders once a week

I’d recommend you visit a reputable Osteopath to get to the source of the problem, otherwise you might be doing something to make it worse.

I had feet problems a few years ago which went worse when wrongly diagnosed
I would consider a chiropractor and a sports physio.
My problem wa# coming from my hips and associated areas

Me too, Morton’s, very painful esp at night, had the injections, work for a while, don’t fancy surgery, so put up with it I suppose, alcohol helps I must say :D

What was it that was pricey, not sure of your meaning.

Could be the change of boots. But as you say though your gut doesn’t think so.
It’s also expensive to experiment with different walking boots especially as good ones are circa £200 a pair.
Hope you get to the bottom of it and are able to do the walk in relative comfort.

Whalley Warm & Dry. They sorted out a problem my sister had with one of her heel arches. They spent ages measuring her feet and making sure the boots were right. Have a look at their reviews. People travel long distances to go there.

Few mentions of Whalley Warm & Dry on here, including from me, worth paying them a visit maybe when BFC are at home

Just to update.

I wore my old boots today, I didn't have the heart to bin them, did 8 miles and my feet were fine.
So it is the boots. The first thing I noticed was that they didn't fell as tight as my new ones across the bridge of my foot, so I'm guessing I need a wider fitting boot. The squeezing would account for the Mortons Neuroma symptoms.

Plan A is to try the new boots with thin socks on and see if it improves.
Plan B is to see if I can find someone who can stretch them for me. I know you can stretch leather boots, but mine are suede, infact it should be easier.

Thanks for the advice everyone

Good luck, hope it works. When I had plantar fasciitis it was really annoying and the device I suggested plus physio really worked. Even now if I've been for a long walk or been on my feet all day I still use my Revitive, just so relaxing.

Timpsons will do that for you, but if they require stretching quite a lot, make sure you tell them so.

Glad you think you are sorted. I was just going to advise, contact Charlotte. Just her field and she’d have soon had you flying along.

Steve the Cobbler in King Lane Clitheroe does that sort of thing and there's a good chance he will be cheaper than Timpsons. Michael Woods at Longridge also did some for me. If you need to consult anyone, see a podiatrist or orthotist firsrt. They are the experts on feet. They have both at the PALS centre in Accrington, but you may need a referral from your GP.

As others have commented above, it's important that you get an accurate diagnosis.
I was treated for Plantar and fallen arches, then they found out I had arthritis between
the bones of my foot. Get an X-ray done on it if you can.
