Have you ever left a Clarets game early?

Post by FCBurnley » Fri Oct 25, 2019 9:49 pm

Just watching the demolition of Southampton. It got me wondering if I had ever left a Clarets game early because of the score. Only one I could remember was away at Sheffield Wednesday in May 1967. We lost 7-0. Anybody else left early ?

Only once. Bristol city away a few years ago. We were losing and I missed the equaliser in the last minute.
Never again.

Loads of time, and couldn’t care less about others opinions on it. I’ve left when it’s been a freezing and boring game to go to the pub as well.

No. But many near me do. I cant understand it. Some leave at about 85 minutes.

Mind you 9-0 down at 85 minutes and I might do.

Plenty of times.

The last one though for how shite we were was Doncaster away in Coyle's season. I left at half time even though we were only 1-0 down, but we were never going to win.

Probably Grezza's worst half for us.

Every game so that I can get out without having to queue for ages. I always leave with 2 minutes of extra time to go and watch the end in the concourse. That way when the final whistle blows I am on my way to my car which is parked on Pheasandford Green, 15 minutes away. I want to watch a match, not spend hours in traffic.

ALMOST never. Just once in fact in my entire life, which is why I remember it clearly. V Celtic, I left shortly after the players came back out following the enforced "delay".

Going 3-0 down at home always gives me a decision to make.

I noticed that was the trigger for a fair chunk of Saints fans.

Got home before the game ended when we got battered at Bury in the 90s. Think me and my mates sacked it off at HT cos we were 4-0 down in the p*ssing rain

Can anyone remember the game against Crewe on the Turf (just after the 9/11 attacks), I think we were losing 0-3, but pulled it back to draw, if memory serves.

We buggered off then and of course regretted it.

I left Elland Road early when we were 3-0 down in 1966/67. It finished 3-1 and I missed a Ralph Coates goal. I came close in 76/77 when we were 4-1 down at home against Charlton. I'd started walking round via the Bee Hole and while on there we pulled one and then another back so I stayed and saw us draw 4-4.

But I'd have done anything to get out of Ewood in 2000/01.

With the cricket field end only having one exit, if I stay until the end it can be 15 minutes before I leave the ground.

I think the lock in at Athens still has me still up on average though

If I have to get away quickly I’ll nip down and watch the last few minutes on the screens in the concourse to beat the rush at full time in the CFS but i’ve never left early for the score.

I did leave the stand with about 10 mins to go years ago when 3-0 down to Forest at home but we made it a mission to get into all the other stands when they opened the doors. So myself and a friend have the quite unique accolade of watching the same match from every single home stand.

Quite often. If I'm bored or fed up of a game, I will leave early. I can see no point in hanging about.
The last one I left early was Sunderland, this season. I left immediately as the third went in.

Hereford 1987, we went 3-0 down so I left. By the time I’d walked home we were 6-0 down.

Totally understand fans with long journeys to make leaving early. The ones who travel from far away to home games or travel long distances to away games are truly genuine supporters. UTC Think I would have left early tonight if I was a saints fan

Once.
Cov' away '90's.
With a mate Manc' based from Cov' who traveled home and away with Cov.. Great guy.
15 mins before the end he says "we stay / or we go for beers and curry now and make the train so we can get back to Manc and go out there.

I didn't question it, we went.
The logic of 15 minutes did not equate given the choice.
It quickly escalated and we just scrapped back to get the last train back.

Away days eh!

I was 'invited' to leave a number of games both home and away back in the day by friendly Police officers but I have never voluntarily left a match before the final whistle although, as AfloatinClaret says, there have been many I wished I had.

I travel 128 miles each way to all home games and find the traffic frustrating - but the traffic after my 3rd closest game of the season last week was as bad as any I have experienced!

Feb 4th 1967. Went with my Mum (Dad had to work) who surprised me as I thought it was a shopping trip to Burnley. She had my wooden rattle in her shopping bag as well! Place was heaving, 40,000 on. Stood at the back of the longside near the cricket field end. Barely saw anything as I was 10 at the time. Mum wanted to get out early because of the crowd. We were losing one nil. Gordon Harris equalized with an 89th min penalty and we heard the roar as we were walking towards the town centre. Got home and Dad was furious that we had left before the end. Felt sorry for Mum, but taught me a life lesson. Never left a game early since.

Only once, we were losing 3-0 at home to Oxford at half time and were showing zero appetite for a come back, second half in the pub seemed a better idea. Game finished 3-0 and I was warm and had a few drinks inside me. I didn't even leave until the end when we were 0-6 at home to Hereford

Was at that game..........stayed to the bitter end, on the way home vowed I would leave any future match if we were losing six nil. Never wanted to see my team concede seven again. So yes I have left the Turf twice as soon as the sixth goal was conceded. Must have worked as we held them to six!!!!

Please stick to the question in hand;'score related early exits',otherwise, this just becomes a self promoted 'fan of the century thing'.By the way, the ground seemed a bit sparsely populated when Everton's 5th went in last Boxing Day.......

Plenty, I'm not an uber fan.

A few that stick in mind.

City at home under Stan.
Wigan away under Waddle.
Preston away when Eastwood put us 1-0 up
Preston away SVT
Rotherham at home 2-6
Wolves away 3-0 left after an hour
Stockport away when there was a riot

Some times I don't see the point in staying so get off early and go and do something else. I do find it a bit rich when leaving early v Spurs the other Christmas, some top hat had a go for me leaving early. Super fan eh? Clocked him leaving early later in the season. I couldn't find anything close to hand to throw at him.

I tend to leave my seat at minute 60, watch 10 minutes in the concourse and then listen to the rest of the game on the radio if it’s on as my drive home is nearly half an hour.

Leaving 5 mins early can save 30-40 in a queue, if I still lived in the town and could walk home, I'd stay... But it's a no brainier really, especially when an hour later the traffic report is still reporting heavy traffic in Burnley.

Plus I don't give two hoots what anyone else thinks about it.

Remember a certain Kevin McDonald apparently leaving after being subbed against City when we were losing 5-0 at half time me personally never left before the whistle.

Other than a couple of minutes of stoppage time if I needed to get back, I don’t think I have. Though I’m not going to judge those who do - you pays your money, you do what you want. Do find something fascinating in a macabre way when your team are getting smashed.

1997? I left early only to find my car blocked in on the car park.

Just remembered another I left early. York City away Boxing Day 1984. This was an enforced early departure courtesy of North Yorkshire Police....

Watford away 71-72 missed Casper scoring consolation. Lost 3-1 I think, remember Geoff Nulty heading against the post early on. More recently Ipswich at home on the day the skydivers dropped in/on the Cricket Field stand!
