Everybody has a casualty story but I think you might just have trumped anybody I know of! You’re one tough cookie!

All the best with your recovery!

For those wondering what happened..... well, I hadn’t been well for a while and had been to see my doctor a few times and was on antibiotics. One morning I was lying in bed when I heard and felt a pop in my stomach. I jumped out of bed like a scalded cat and was lying on the floor in more pain than i’d ever felt in my life.

I didn’t know what was wrong with me but knew it was bad - I could feel fluid gushing around my stomach. I was taken to Blackburn in an ambulance and passed out just as I arrived at the hospital. The next thing I recall clearly is waking up 34 days later not knowing what the hell had gone on.

I was apparently rushed into surgery where they discovered that my intestines had split - so all the bad stuff that stays in there was flooding my stomach and infecting my organs. I was in surgery for six hours where they were basically trying to keep me alive, but they had to stop when my body couldn’t stand it anymore and I had a heart attack.

I was transferred to ICU and placed on a ventilator and dialysis whilst they waited to see if I survived. After two days the sepsis has reached such a level that it would kill me, so even though more surgery would probably kill me too they had to go back in. I had five lots of surgery in less than a week and my significant others were told twice to prepare for the worst...... but somehow I survived.

The surgeons, nurses and staff here worked a miracle and I owe them everything. I have restricted movement of my legs and right arm but I’m getting slowly better with physio. What is very clear to me is that I am incredibly, incredibly lucky to be here and I feel blessed to have this second chance.
Jesus. Everytime I wake up with a bit of an ache, I'll re-read this post.

What an inspirational story, we all have more grit and determination than we give ourselves credit for, even when our conscious mind is out for the count. The challenge is that we sometimes forget it.

I wish you all the best for your recovery and hopefully a long future life, and well done to those wonderful doctors and nurses who are at their best in the most challenging of situations.

Kevin,

You might not feel that good at the moment, but it'll surprise you as to how quickly you'll recover once you get home and there is no reason why you can't make a full recovery. I lost a couple of stone and felt far better for it.

When you hear stuff like this it kind of puts our petty squabbles into perspective doesn't it? I don't know you Socrates but from what I gather you were always well thought of on here, even by those you may have angered.

You will overcome all this because from what you have said you have survived a terrible ordeal and come out (kind of) smiling. Good luck man, all the best to you.

Fantastic news that you've survived this awful ordeal, Socrates, as a fellow boxing fan I always liked reading your take on the latest upcoming fights and hope to see more of them in the future :) Also, a shout out to the NHS and the staff that work there, my girlfriend is a nurse in A&E and they really do put everything into it, they will all be buzzing you've pulled through.

Wow just read this. I know my dad had been to see your dad (friends going back years) numerous times and as a result knew you had been unwell but my dad didn't divulge anything and had no idea it was THAT serious.

I know you love boxing but this is another level of fight you have shown here!!!! Fair play for that and your positivity. Best wishes!
