Incredible competition edlass back in the day. The league games before and after against West Ham and Everton had crowds of 18,000 and 19,000.
Managers doing interviews were also nothing like they are today. One I remember was Alf Ramsey. He was asked what the team was for an international match and he told the press: "What's that got to do with you?"

I remember a sea of red across the Beehole, it was very impressive.
As others have said though the game itself was forgettable.

Just trying to recall who they beat in the previous round which certainly had them 'up for't cup'. All pay on the gate, too.
Re: ARTICLE: No TV cameras or Welsh music for cup tie
Wasn't that the year Blyth Spartans reached the fifth round and Wrexham beat them in a replay after extra time, after equalising in the last minute with a twice-taken corner - retaken after the corner flag fell over?Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 12:52 pmJust trying to recall who they beat in the previous round which certainly had them 'up for't cup'. The Turf was absolutely rammed that day. Packed to the rafters and I seem to recall the attendance given as 36000+
It was one of a few games with huge gates (by our standards) that season. 33000+ for Man Utd and for the visit of Leeds I've seen figures of 37000+ and 40000+, not sure which is correct.

36,091 in the report linked which was given at the time although I've seen it quoted as less than thattodclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 12:57 pmThe Turf was absolutely rammed that day. Packed to the rafters and I seem to recall the attendance given as 36000+

I remember that they beat Palace down at Selhurst Park.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 12:52 pmJust trying to recall who they beat in the previous round which certainly had them 'up for't cup'. All pay on the gate, too.
Their star man was called forward called Smallman, think Everton signed him soon after.

Re: ARTICLE: No TV cameras or Welsh music for cup tie
Was going to add this on the Bob Lord thread but seeing as the game now has its own one.Couple of years ago I was on holiday and got talking to a coupleWhen I told them where I was from the fellow said I've only been to Burnley once and started talking about the game.He said he worked in the steel works in North Wales which employed thousands and the build up to the game was all anyone was talking about. He added the morning of the game as they went for the coach he claimed the line of buses went on to miles. As for the match itself he went on to tell me Thier main striker was injured and didn't play I can't remember who he said an during the game the replacement striker got a glorious chance from about 7 or 8 yards out and skied it over the bar and maintained if the main striker was on he wouldn't have missed. As a young lad walking off after the game I can remember a mass of red and white all chanting Wrexham I suppose I was a little scared but convinced we were going to win the cup
Re: ARTICLE: No TV cameras or Welsh music for cup tie
Thanks. (Wrexham beat Blyth Spartans in the 5th round in 1978.)
Re: ARTICLE: No TV cameras or Welsh music for cup tie
Didn’t we stage a sixth round tie in 1983 against Sheffield Wednesday?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 12:04 pmInspired by the references to the game on the Bob Lord Stand thread - here's an article on the last time Turf Moor staged a 6th round tie in the FA CUp

Re: ARTICLE: No TV cameras or Welsh music for cup tie
In the quarter final between Newcastle and Forest was a farce and Newcastle should have been thrown out of the cup
The Newcastle United fans in the Leazes End of the ground (now the Sir John Hall stand) were renowned for their volatility, and invaded the pitch. Two Nottingham Forest players were injured in the debacle, but the referee waited until all players were recovered and received the permission of both managers to continue the tie. Newcastle managed to come back and win with a late goal by their captain, Bobby Moncur, in spite of the two-goal and one-player deficit.[1] Up to 23 people were taken to hospital as a result of the pitch invasion, of whom two had fractured skulls; another 103 people were treated at the ground and 39 arrests were made.

And the FA then ordered a replay at a neutral ground (not at Forest) which was drawn; and the second replay, also at a neutral ground, was won by Newcastle.Longside4evr wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 3:01 pmIn the quarter final between Newcastle and Forest was a farce and Newcastle should have been thrown out of the cup

Re: ARTICLE: No TV cameras or Welsh music for cup tie
The atmosphere for that Wrexham game was something else.
Definitely deserved better football than was seen. Tinted specs off, recall them being sharper than us a lot of the time.
But when that goal went in, the Longside just really did erupt!
Hell of a surge too. My mate from Buxton went whizzing past me. I was OK just in front of a barrier.
God knows what health and safety would have to say now.

Re: ARTICLE: No TV cameras or Welsh music for cup tie
This is not the first time I have pointed this out.
I have a letter somewhere from Ray Simpson confirming this error in his book.
The crowd v Wrexham was 40000.
The crowd v Leeds was 36000.
Somehow these have been reversed. And have continued as reversed now for decades.

Re: ARTICLE: No TV cameras or Welsh music for cup tie
My mate and I were at the replay we had tickets in the Leppings Lane stand I remember the game start was delayed because of the huge numbers wanting to attend. The crush on the terraces below was obvious and we pulled 2 kids up to share our seats and told their Dads where we would meet them and we did. That end of the ground was a disaster waiting to happen, the way it was penned and the the lack of stewardship on entry and as we know April 1989 it did happen.

Regarding the Newcastle/Forest tie Moncur's winning goal was yards offside but there was no way it was going to be ruled out.
Both replayed games were at Goodison Park. My brother-in-law travelled from Bedlington in Northumberland for both games.

Something which has always stuck in my memory from the Wrexham match was the cavalcade of corporation buses in every colour,'under the sun', which brought much of their fantastic away support. The FA cup was, definitely, 'king' in those days.

and Joey Jones (Liverpool) for two.

Is the Leeds one you are thinking of a night match? I seem to recall a Tuesday game with best part of 37k on. I walked in the back of the Longside that night into thousands of Leeds fans. Made my excuses and left (quickly) as they say.todclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 09, 2020 12:57 pmThe Turf was absolutely rammed that day. Re: ARTICLE: No TV cameras or Welsh music for cup tie
Leeds were on a long unbeaten (record breaking?) run when they came and ultimately heading for the title I think. It was definitely a Saturday afternoon game and it was a jam packed, but a 0-0 bore fest on the pitch tbh. The Wrexham game was also absolutely bouncing and was another dour game when on paper we should have been smashing them out of sight, but as mentioned above they had already had some great results, especially Soton away. Am I correct in thinking that their 1-0 win over Boro was as a result of a twice taken corner. The first one came to nothing, but the corner flag had fallen over and was lying on the floor at the time (not legal) so they took it again and scored from it?? As I mentioned on another thread recently, a relative of mine didn't go on that Wrexham game and was actually outside Marks and Spencers in town when Casper scored and he said the roar was unmistakable and absolutely deafening, even at that distance and everyone stopped and paused. Also, as said above, Newcastle (and their "fans") got away with murder. Forest leading 3-1, pitch invasion, players attacked and mini riot. Game stops for considerable time and on the resumption, with angry fans lining the playing area, Forest fall apart start conceding and it goes to a replay. After 2 attempts Newcastle go through to meet us at Hillsborough in the semi, but they really should have been thrown out. Joke imo.

Just imagine the furore, if a club chairman made those kind of remarks about Jews today!
I doubt the West Ham duo would be too pleased either!
