Midfield was poor tonight

Post by Guller Bull » Sun Sep 20, 2020 8:58 pm

Big fan of Westwood, McNeil and Brownhill but as a midfield it was weak tonight

Good game overall and in some ways quite heartened but need to be linking play better.

I don't think it affected much with Brady going off, something just wasn't gelling in the middle of the park.

Covered a lot of ground and were 'treading water' near the end.

Our midfields first job was to try and protect the inexperienced back four, what on earth did you expect...expansive football?

I thought we did quite well in most aspects considering the circumstances. We looked most vulnerable down our right hand side.

Bit of both, Leicester have some real quality all over the park but it just felt there wasn't the creativity and organisation in the centre. McNeil was poor by his standards. Brownhill has yet to find his Prem feet (he will) and Westwood looked off it.

To be fair I'd have probably took that result before the game, I feared for us that much.
We could have had 4 ourselves, but also defended quite poorly by our standards.
Fair result, no complaints from the manager, his selection, the effort etc.

Thought we put up a spirited and encouraging performance overall and certainly not in the doom/gloom camp. Just thought that's the area of the park that was at it's weakest tonight

I've been saying it for many, many months, our midfield has no idea how to retain the ball and control a game. Brownhill played well tonight but the rest of our midfield was completely over run. People are crying out for new signings, well I would love to see a couple of quality midfielders, like Barton and Defour at their best, who could help us to try and control midfield and create more for our forwards.

Needs a bit more steel and quality in the centre.

Oddly I think they were too eager to sit back to protect our inexperienced centre backs and therefore failed to close down effectively enough.

Would have been interesting if we had enough midfield players to put McNeil as a no 10 tonight and play like we did at Palace. I think we'd have caused them problems and certainly looked more solid.

Crying out for a defensive midfielder to play in front of our back four and give them protection

They were given too much space to shoot without anyone closing them down

I thought Brownhill was fantastic tonight and Westwood used the ball intelligently.Brady was also doing very well defensively until he went off.
Dwight could have closed Praet down for the 4th goal rather than go out wide but whilst being okay defensively wasn't his usual attacking menace.
Pieters was his usual solid self and was okay.
Leicester are a good side and we gave them a decent game.
I also thought that Charlie Taylor showed he is the best English left back by a country mile.

Why does Dwight so often end up after running forward a few yards turning round and then playing the ball backwards? So frustrating.

I’d hate to play midfield now, so many times you could see; time and time again their instinct was to challenge, that seconds hesitation makes all the difference.

Midfield definitely looked a lot more open than normal. Maybe the value of Jack Cork will be appreciated now. Brownhill's work rate was good, but he faded badly. Might need to pace himself a bit better, or it may take him a proper pre season to get fully Dyche fit. No managers day this year I presume.

I would suggest because there are no players to pass to in more advanced positions.

Their 3rd goal came from their 20m signing last summer and their 21m signing this summer. Second had a lucky deflection . Fourth was poor defensively from us but some of these comments are mental.

Overall we played pretty well. Especially given the fact we've half the usual 1st eleven out. Though Westwood and Brownhills had good games. Brady was playing well. Peters did pretty well too. If Wood scores instead of the post its 3-3 and a really exciting last 10 minute. As Dyche says its all about fine margins

It was 4-2 when Wood hit the post - would have made it 4-3

So it was. (Doh) it was the Peters header. Anyway, it was a fairly tight game bar some key moments. Like most of our games. Leicester are an excellent side and our midfield played pretty well overall.

Fine margins, we just looked a Premier League game behind leicester in sharpness all over the pitch.. Similar to the City post lockdown fixture and we did OK after that one...keep the faith.

McNeil is the one creative spark in the whole team - not sure what people expect him to achieve on his own with zero service - it all started OK with Taylor in support but as Leicester took control we were forced onto the back foot to try and protect an inexperienced back line - he was completely isolated

Tonight's game would have better suited a 4-5-1 - except we haven't got enough players to make up the 5

It helps if your most influential player doesn't stand, hands on hips as the game goes on and doesn't anticipate an obvious pass. He literally couldn't be arsed.

I thought they gave their all from back to front. It's much easier to accept defeat when you can see players giving their all.
And Wrighty's recollections of his time here were wonderful to hear.
