I think the question is what has Rigg done in his time here, signed Brownhill and Jay Rod which every man and his dog knew was a good move, what else ?
I think people need to realise what Rigg’s role is. He doesn’t sign players, full stop.

An Extraordinary Board Meeting is being called this week to see if £35 can released to buy a new one.
That meeting was held last week. It was decided that £35 is a lot of money and the club could make do without buying a new one. The younger players from the development squads were quickly dispatched to the park with a loaf of bread between them.

Following a two steps backwards and one step forwards vision, they were all told to find a nice piece of turf, kneel down and do their best to attract and catch pigeons that could be trained to deliver all of our correspondences in a timely fashion.

It was referred to as the " Wing and a Prayer " plan.

So it's only in the unlikely (statistically speaking*) scenario that Westwood gets injured in the next month it's a good deal? In the more likely scenario he doesn't then is it a good deal? Because that seems the only arguement you can put forward for Stephens over a younger, more long term signing.

Who cares if it limits us in the market and financially in the more long term? At least we'll be covered for the next month or so. Well worth £1m plus 2+ years of wages.

*given Westwood has missed only 5 games through injury in the last 3 and half years since he signed for us.
We’re not signing him just as an insurance policy for Westwood though are we. He will give Dyche the option to play 3 in midfield, it will also give Dyche the option to play Brownhill on the right. It’s all well and good wanting to sign young players, but the truth is they are much bigger gambles, and the lesser gambles are much more expensive. For all you know Dyche could see Benson as a potential to step up this season or next.

He suggesting players, I’m suggesting the people more qualified than him might have already ruled those players out.

His role is to oversee recruitment, the academy and the sports science departments. In terms of recruitment his job is to identify players that meet with the clubs financial and playing requirements. Forming a long term strategy that will protect the club and put things in place to ensure it prospers is also within his remit.

While he might not sign the actual cheques he is tasked with finding us quality players that satisfy Sean in terms of the playing contribution they can make now or in the near future and meet with Garlicks value conscious approach to doing business. If he fulfils those objectives the cheques get signed, if he doesn't then the cheques don't get signed.

He might not make the final decision about who gets signed, but he is directly responsible for putting together the list of options that relates to who is considered a potential signing. If the options he puts before Dyche and Big Mike aren't suitable they are faced with uncomfortable choices - sign a player that isn't what the Gaffer thinks we need to improve us on the pitch, sign a player that could place the club in financial hardship or sign nobody.

Signing the cheques is a financial necessity, formulating the choices is the focal point that influences the outcome.

The BFC board may not have known that this new shutdown was on it's way, but I'll bet they planned for it in case it happened.

Massive losses for football now the season is going to be fanless. Feel so sorry for the little clubs, many of whom will go to the wall.

Good job we have a cautious board.

What, you mean like Kieran Tierney or John McGinn were playing in a poor league and the latter went to Villa for £3m?

How much are the pair of them worth now ?
Tierney was at Celtic and went for £25m to Arsenal.

McGinn played for Scotland at all levels and Villa fought off Celtic for his signature.

Why do you think nobody bigger than Forest went for McKenna....and why did McKenna not go to a bigger club with more chance of promotion than Forest ?

Maybe he is will turn out to be a good signing and a good player - but I’m really struggling to see what makes you think that he was good enough for the Premier League.

If Rigg has anything about him, and he has now been with us 3 years so should understand our finances, and how SD and MG work. As a result you would expect names he forwards to have been pre-qualified to meet the criteria expected and at least a few of these to be sanctioned.

That's assuming he knows what MG's criteria is, and it can really only be wage and signing fee. It sounds like MG isn't trusting others to sign players until he's watched enough of them and done his own scouting.

And A.N. Other midfielder wouldn't give these options? (Or Dwight ala Palace, or Benson)

Why is Stephens such a sure bet but others aren't? When was the last time he played in a central midfield 2? Not last season.

If he does sew Benson stepping up then it makes even less sense blocking his path with an ageing player on big wages so I don't get that point?

He's as much a gamble as anyone else, the only guarantee you're getting is we never get any money back on him.

if a club that has been in the PL for as long as we have can't afford the fee's/package mentioned for the like of Quaison then questions quite rightly need to be asked.............and even today Dyche claims to not know the criteria they are working under to sign players........less than 2 weeks before the window shuts

Do think to an extent that will play in to our hands. A lot of clubs will have spend proportions of their budgets in a market that has just suffered fairly major set back.

I also feel sorry for the smaller clubs and think the answer lies with players taking pay cuts. A bit like the rest of the entertainment industry where people have not been getting paid at all.

With no disrespect, I don't think you understand how recruitment works at Burnley if you are supporting the chairman yet criticising the recruitment team. The manager has explained time and time again that they don't have budgets, that basically they have to go cap in hand to the chairman should we want to bring in a player. It is the chairman who does all that stuff.

Maybe the recruitment team, and potentially Dyche, recommended Quaison, who I believe is looking less likely to come, last year or the year before. What I can confirm is that this particular player has not appeared to us out of a piece of software.
Sorry if I misinterpreted your words, but mentioning Dyche could imply that the discovery wasn't made by Rigg, along with the notion that we knew about him before Rigg arrived. The additional information that he didn't appear to us out of a piece of software would also suggest that our new analytical scouts had nothing to do with finding him.

I myself picked him out in my Tombola list for last Summer.

Not been here two years yet and a lot of his work has been building up the recruitment department and academy work. If anyone is pointing fingers at Rigg for our lack of transfer activity then they are pointing in the wrong direction.

I guess in todays game, gone are the characters like Stan Ternent who could spot a talent in 30 minutes without the use of soft ware. Did he not help get Glenn Little, Robbie Blake, even experienced heads like Ian Wright, Mitchell Thomas and endless more to join our club. I believe he recommended Robertson the Liverpool full back to Steve Bruce when at Hull after watching him for 30 minutes. Some full back now

My first pick for a left sided central defender was snapped up by Sven Mislintat, mr diamond eye himself, as soon as Stuttgart won promotion to the Bundesliga. They paid £3.5m for him.

Scott McKenna was on my list along with other players that have moved to good clubs and not one has cost more than £3.5m.

You can look at the Armchair Scout (UK) thread to see the picks I posted on Aug 19th, even though I put them together shortly after the Winter window ended.

Hey.. guys.. must contain link! Let's see how far we can go from here, with every post containing a Burnley transfer news link. It's turning into worse than the Covid one.

A rehash of what's been printed, but even that's better than the alternative of what's been posted.

Burnley are increasingly confident that they will be able to secure a deal to sign long-term target Dale Stephens.

You do realise we will lose a damn sight more if we are relegated don’t you
I've only been watching Burnley for 68 years, so maybe you can explain?

What make you think we'll be relegated? I certainly don't think we will.

Not been here two years yet and a lot of his work has been building up the recruitment department and academy work. If anyone is pointing fingers at Rigg for our lack of transfer activity then they are pointing in the wrong direction.
Two years is an eternity in terms of recruitment. Some clubs have dropped two full leagues in that time frame. I just mentioned Sven Mislintat in my last post and he serves as a very good comparison to Mike Rigg.

When Mislintat joined Stuttgart last season the club was in a terrible shape. Their recruitment had been awful, they had no money and they had just been relegated. In the space of only a couple of weeks he set them up with a fresh new recruitment team. Then he sold players, bringing in £70m. He spent £19.5m restructuring the team and bringing in 18 players ( some permanent and some on loan ) for a total of £19.5m. That quickly built team won 2.Bundesliga and promotion to the Bundesliga at the first time of asking.

This season he sold another 3 players bringing in £6.75m and he spent £10m to bring in another six players. All of that transfer work was completed by June 30th and cost a net outlay of £3.25m.

In the space of a year Mislintat has given Stuttgart success, invigorated them, built a team of decent youngsters who have their careers in front of them and put nearly £50m in their coffers.

And with the benefit of an extra year Rigg has achieved what ?

That is the difference between a recruitment specialist that has consistently put in good performances over the full course of his career and one that has consistently put in poor performances.

I'm not buying the Academy impact either, because Jon pepper had already done most of the important groundwork to book our promotion to Category 1.

I get the impression that you are a big fan of Mike Rigg, which is fine by me ( differences of opinion are great ), but for me he has achieved very little in the space of 2 years and the club looks to be in worse shape than it was before he joined us.

If Rigg has anything about him, and he has now been with us 3 years so should understand our finances, and how SD and MG work. As a result you would expect names he forwards to have been pre-qualified to meet the criteria expected and at least a few of these to be sanctioned.
I doubt anyone outside the Board understands the club's finances just now with the damage that has been done to the revenue streams by the covid shutdowns.
The Board will be keeping the position highly confidential as they are balancing keeping the confidence of creditors, staff (the main assets after the PL golden share), potential investors and potential signings with the expectations of supporters for additions to the playing staff.
I would guess the expectations of us supporters come a distant second.

Yes, I think you're right and a couple of us on here have been saying it for a while. At the end of the day, football is big business, and if we wait until the last minute to buy, then struggling clubs will lower their prices. If they don't, then we pay the going rate, so nothing lost by waiting a bit longer.
