West Brom v Burnley on Sky Box Office

Post by ClaretTony » Fri Oct 09, 2020 1:46 pm

Still awaiting confirmation but it seems all Premier League games that are not selected for television coverage will now be shown on Sky Box Office or BT Box Office at a charge of £14.95 per game.

So the for the home games I’d have to pay another £15, on top of the sky subscription, to watch a game that I’ve already paid?

It's a business Sky are running and the more 'free stuff' people expect, the less revenue will eventually be paid to the Clubs.

Price is double what it should be, but it’s inevitable that they’d start charging for the games over and above what’s included in a subscription at some point.

You might have paid for it with your season ticket but that money will be refunded.

We might get that money back but when?

We are already shelling out £38 a month for season ticket

Roughly £25 a month for sky sports

Now around £45 a month to watch games we have no way of attending or other way of watching

It’s crazy

So for an extra £15 per month you can guarantee to watch every Burnley league game that month?

That doesn't seem too, bad, especially as we are rarely on the main televised games.

Suppose you could wait to see how many times we will be on that up coming month and make a decision then.

If say you get 3 games in for £15, you are getting a great deal at £5 per game

The problem is whilst we will be getting the season ticket money back, we are currently still paying for it and now having to pay Box Office fees along with BT and Sky subscription is a joke.

Mentioned on a previous thread about TV games but the Premier League/TV companies want to stop illegal streams online and all they are doing is driving fans to illegal online streams, me being one of them.

It’s £15 per game not month. Box office is a PPV channel

It will be £15 per game MACCA not £15 a month, so a lot of people won't be able to afford nor be happy about another pay.ent to watch football despite the high costs we already pay.

I don’t doubt that but at the moment we are all paying for something that we are not receiving, but then expected to pay extra in order to get some version of it.

So are the clubs getting any extra money from Sky/BT or is this just Sky/BT making a bomb?

Burnley get X amount for TV money and people currently pay X amount for their TV subscription to watch the Burnley games on TV so these are extra shown on PPV. Surely the club should get a payment for those?

Now offering refunds on season tickets but if you take it you forgo the option of going into a ballot this season.

Understand your point but it has been Burnley FC charging you for something you are not receiving but the Premier League/broadcasters charging you for something you will receive.

They did, but even if we had progressed, it would only have been 2 or 3 games at most as the later rounds would have been televised.

It’s not just the ballot you may be forgoing, it’s also not been clear that if you cancel the ST if you will get your same seat next time (unless I’ve missed it)

Edit: just read the clubs latest statement that seat will be guaranteed for return

Fans who are paying for a ST don't have any room to complain.

Not sure that’s got anything to do with this. Season ticket holder or not the charge for games is £14.95.

You'd like to think that'll be the case, otherwise all the subscribers are doing is lining Murdoch's pockets, and not assisting their specific club in any meaningful way.

How many peeps will actually fork out £15 for West Brom-Burnley is questionable, particularly in these tough times, and so any monies that either club did receive will likely be nominal compared to the usual TV lolly they generate.

My biggest worry is that the big clubs try and negotiate their own PPV channels on the back of these matches, it won't happen immediately, as the existing Sky package has a few years to run yet, but it wouldn't be the first time they've attempted such a move, and this would just increase the existing disparity between the giants and the medium ranking PL clubs such as ourselves, and make it that much harder to compete than it already is in this marketplace.

People will die due to this Sky/BT decision.

Seems obvious that friends will gather together to watch instead of everyone paying £15 each time, particularly to watch a team they don’t support but have a casual interest. Companies should be doing all they can to discourage household mixing, not encourage it. It is the main Covid spreader and it often isn’t the youngish person bringing it in who suffers from it.

Seems melodramatic but it feels 99% certain that more people will die due to this one issue, compared to if it had stayed how the matches were broadcast in September.

2nd gripe is that this locks in the feeling that the Sky Sports subs are now way too much. Many sports still cancelled, no fans, no atmosphere - Not sure how anyone can justify £23 per month (in my case) then a bundle of £15s on top. It almost guarantees I’ll take a season ticket refund to fund the odd game on TV.

Ahh right, wowzers, not such a great deal as first thought, but I'd presume for some of the bigger clubs fans £15 would be a small fraction of the cost of attending a game.
Some peoples match day outlay is 100's of pounds once ticket, travel, parking, food and drinks etc is taken into consideration.

Looking at it from.a neutral point of view, £15 for the whole family to watch will represent good to excellent value for some.

Shame we cannot gather at friends or families as you could take turns in hosting to save on cost.

Still, at £15 a game I'm sure some Burnley fans households will find it ok value and pay.

Sounds like a good plan to me.

Not ignoring the logistics and realities of cash flow for supporters but if paying £15 a game means:

- I can watch all games without having to fund illegal activity
- It is likely to reduce the financial implication on the club with rebates
- it’s going to be covered by my ST refund when it comes through.

This is a fair solution IMO.

It’s not fair for fans to expect these games to be free to air

It’s not fair to expect all games as part of your sky subscription either.

It’s the closest arrangement I could imagine to how fans could continue to pay to watch their team whilst the pandemic is locking us out of the stadiums.

For households with multiple ST holders it is even more value for money.

I believe you can get access to sky box office events on now tv so you don’t necessarily even need a sky subscription to view these.

Clearly missing a lot of detail but not sure why there is such an outrage outside of people struggling to cash flow the games - but you could find that they can get refunds back if this is now what has been agreed.

If you do have sky the box office wouldn’t debit your account until a month later I presume as it forms part of your bill. Therefore it may only be those purchasing on now tv that have the cash flow issue.

I do wonder also if there is a revenue split for this which again will help the club.

Might be worth confirming that this decision has NOT been taken by Sky & BT. It’s been taken by the clubs and it is the clubs who will get the money from those who pay the £14.95.

Yes, happily paid those 2 tenners.

I've now got a decision to make: do I continue with NOW TV Sport £25/month - lot's of games, maybe even one or two will be games Burnley are in? Do I accept BT Sport TV plan to increase my monthly fee + £4 and 3/9% addon + inflation in April? Do I also pay £15/game for the Burnley games that aren't picked for my existing £40+/month?

Correct me if I'm wrong, tiger76, I had it in my head that Murdoch has nothing to do with Sky anymore as Comcast bought them out in 2018?

Annoyingly this will impact on fans such as us more than fans of bigger clubs. The small number of times that Burnley are on TV will mean that Burnley fans will have to fork out a lot more than some of the other teams if they want to watch every game.

Ordinarily I'd agree but this is prime for the big games all going PPV as they will attract the bigger PPV income.

So we might find we end up on TV more often with your average Sky subscriber being shafted into the bargain!

So we might find we end up on TV more often with your average Sky subscriber being shafted into the bargain!
Interesting theory. I guess it depends on the revenue split as to what will be more profitable. You can also get Box Office without sky sports so Sky wouldn't want to risk losing subscribers. I'm sure someone is looking at the various scenarios though.

It works out well again for the big clubs (and Leeds) who are on every weekend.

Shocking stuff really, people already shelled out for season tickets, monthly sky sports and BT sports packages now we are being charged another £60 a month?

Can I ask where this money is going to because it isn’t our transfer budget...

No surprise - this is the only thing that gives fans a choice of being able to watch it and protects the clubs income stream.

Can't really complain about not spending millions in transfers and then expect them to exist on thin air.

If you don't want to pay - then don't. Kust don't start crying when we have to sell Tarky and Mcneil just to balance the books

Do we know how many times we are on Sky (non PPV) for the games that have been announced?

The thing is Macca, at £15 a game people from multiple households probably will gather to watch, which could create further infections.
We won’t be paying the £15 per game in our household. It’s not because we cannot afford it, it is simply because it doesn’t represent good value to watch what are essentially training matches. Football is just not appealing at present.

I'm 67 years old and have been a season ticket holder for over 50 years, but I'm seriously getting totally fed up with football. I certainly won't be paying £15 to watch a game at 5.30pm on a Monday!

so fans of burnley fulham etc get screwed over compared with fans of united liverpool etc

surely our club will do something about it as completely unfair.

we could have an extra 25 PPV games compared to United fans.
