Claret photo help.
The photo below appeared on the clubs Nobby Stiles tribute. Can anybody identify the Claret for me?

Re: Claret photo help.
Correct. You led me to my Clarets Chronicles and Ian Towers played in the home games on 14-4-62 and 4-5-63. With the crowd in attendance I’d expect it to be one of these matches. The Enclosure wrote: ↑Sat Oct 31, 2020 8:46 amAm pretty sure Ian Towers.I dont think Fenton ever played against Man United for Burnley.
It was the mop of hair that made me doubt myself. I don’t recall him having that much in that era, pre-Beatles.

Re: Claret photo help.
In my records, Towers didnt play in that Man U home game 4th May '63 but Peter Simpson played No.10. I dont recall ever seeing Peter Simpson play so Ive no idea if he looked like that. Stiles played in both the games mentioned & Towers played in the April 1962 game - so could well be him in that game. Gates given as 36,240 in 1962 game, "only" 30,266 in the 1963 game. Enclosure looks pretty packed with kids sitting over the wall so- yes probably 1962 and Towers.huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Sat Oct 31, 2020 9:02 amCorrect. Re: Claret photo help.
You are correct. Simpson played 10 and Towers came in for him the next match, away to Leyton Orient. I was out by a line in my check.LeadBelly wrote: ↑Sat Oct 31, 2020 9:56 amIn my records, Towers didnt play in that Man U home game 4th May '63 but Peter Simpson played No.10. I think you have a strange version of the Chronicles - no sign of him playing in the 63 game in mine.huw.Y.WattfromWare wrote: ↑Sat Oct 31, 2020 9:02 amCorrect. But I'm certain that is Ian Towers on the picture.

Re: Claret photo help.
v United?
I've not been able to find any reference to the club's tribute to Nobby, suggesting the photo is a game v United, so sticking my neck out.
That bloke messing with Towers is John Talbut. Nobby was only 5'-6", that makes Towers 6'-12". And anyway, the studs are too low for Nobby.
Can someone please put me out of my misery?
PS. Always enjoyed watching Peter Simpson in the reserves and on the few occasions he graced the first team.

Re: Claret photo help.
Definitely Nobby Stiles and Ian Towers in the picture. Think this was a game in the disastrous run-in of 61-62 where Manchester United played defender,Noel Cantwell, an Irish international, at centre forward and he scored two goals in their victory.

I wasn’t certain it was Stiles. He does have a look of Talbut but that photograph is taken some time before Talbut left Burnley.GordonvaleClaret wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 12:25 pmv United?

Re: Claret photo help.
Agreed it does bear a resemblance to JT but he didn't leave for WBA until 1966 I think.
My recollection is that WBA used to wear their blue/white stripes when they came to us & I doubt theyd pull as big a crowd as the one indicated by that photo (packed enclosure with kids sitting over the wall).

And our last season with the hooped socks was 1964/65 while Towers’ last game for Burnley was early 1965/66.LeadBelly wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 2:01 pmAgreed it does bear a resemblance to JT but he didn't leave for WBA until 1966 I think.

Re: Claret photo help.
We're in danger of overcomplicating matters here. As Silkyskills says, huw's photo definitely features Nobby Stiles and Ian Towers. The game took place on April 14th '62, just three weeks before our FA Cup Final at Wembley against Tottenham. Just a few days after that United game Burnley had their press day for the Cup Final and by that time Ian looked a bit different, with a smart looking hair cut as opposed to the mop of hair on huw's photo.GordonvaleClaret wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 12:25 pmv United?

Re: Claret photo help.
That 1961/62 season was a quite remarkable one from our point of view. Even after that home defeat to United (game 35 of 42) we were still at the top of the First Division. But those final 7 games had to be played in the last two weeks remaining of the season and it all became a bit too much, particularly with the FA Cup Final still to come a week later.
We ultimately finished second behind Ipswich in the League and, of course, runners-up to Tottenham at Wembley. A 'nearly' season in which we came so close to achieving the double.
