Burnley's FA Youth Cup winners
Burnley's FA Youth Cup winners
A college friend of mine has just shown me the photo of the youth team. I was there at the final first and second legs but and remember all the players' names except Pat Dooney. Am I getting very forgetful?

Re: Burnley's FA Youth Cup winners
He played just the one game in the cup run I think, the quarter final at Sheffield United and the team photo that is often used was taken at that game.
Re: Burnley's FA Youth Cup winners
Thanks Tony. I just didn't remember the name at all but the rest were easily remembered.(I did wonder where the photo was taken as the team were wearing white - it is a black and white photo - and so unlikely to have been at Turf Moor).

Re: Burnley's FA Youth Cup winners
That's him on the very left of the back row I think.
The pic is at Bramall Lane in front of what was then the main stand which is opposite today's main stand.

Good to see that photo again. Pat Dooney was a friend of mine and sadly died in August 2018.

Re: Burnley's FA Youth Cup winners
Willie Brown is the one missing on that photo so I reckon David Hartley will have played centre forward with Pat Dooney coming in at outside right.

Didn't Hartley score both goals in the home leg in the final against Coventry?

Re: Burnley's FA Youth Cup winners
There were several in that team who would be first team regulars, the most notable being Kindon, Thomas and Docherty. I'd forgotten Docherty captained the youth team. Eric Probert was the one I thought was destined for greatness, other than Thomas, but he faded.

Re: Burnley's FA Youth Cup winners
I went to that away match at Sheffield Utd to watch the youth team, as well as both legs of the final. They were a cracking young team with the craft and skill of Thomas and West and the strength and power of Kndon, Brown etc.
You are right about Eric Probert, I had quite a few nights out with Eric back then (Cats Whiskers etc) and he certainly knew how to drink a fair few pints, very rapidly as well. He was a good lad though and never came the "I'm a footballer, look at me", at least when I was with him.

The qf v Sheffield United was played on FA Cup 6th round day - and we had to drive through the Hillsborough crowds on the way, they were playing Chelsea.Vino blanco wrote: ↑Mon Nov 02, 2020 4:49 pmI went to that away match at Sheffield Utd to watch the youth team, as well as both legs of the final. Sadly, that drink cost Eric his life. He died aged just 52.

And he also went on to probably get named more often in the Burnley Express than any of the other players. He was in virtually every week as a prosecutor for the CPS.The Enclosure wrote: ↑Mon Nov 02, 2020 5:13 pmDavid Hartley has a look of Brian Laws on that photo..

Fantastic performance on the night from the lads, and a fantastic atmosphere to go with it, one of my favourite nights being a claret, anybody remember the attendance that night ?

First game at Turf Moor was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch if I recall correctly.

It was. Played on a Friday night on a mud heap.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 8:09 pmFirst game at Turf Moor was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch if I recall correctly.
Re: Burnley's FA Youth Cup winners
It really was very muddy and how the first team played on it the next day is a wonder.

Correct, O'Neil, Lochhead & Dobson in front of 13,142 fans, less than the previous evening.

Re: Burnley's FA Youth Cup winners
Lochhead's goal in the Leeds game was his 100th league goal for Burnley. His 101st and last came early in the following season at West Brom.
Re: Burnley's FA Youth Cup winners
I know Wilf Wrigley played a few first team games but left to go to university. I never saw him - could he have made it?

Re: Burnley's FA Youth Cup winners
I thought Wilf looked decent. Whether he'd have made a top flight player or not we'll never know. He just suddenly upped and left to go to uni.Hipper wrote: ↑Wed Nov 04, 2020 5:03 pmI know Wilf Wrigley played a few first team games but left to go to university. Re: Burnley's FA Youth Cup winners
I went to the reunion on the 59th anniversary and it was a great night. As we came out a lone figure was walking slowly away from the JH stand. It was Pat Dooley. A very quiet, private person who was well thought of by my friend Eddie Cliff. He was getting a taxi home and he lived a fair way off, can’t just remember where. As a previous poster said, he sadly died later that year.
