Sad news. Never felt quite right watching golf without him commentating.

Re: Peter Alliss
I'd no idea how old he was until that thread recently - sad news though, although not a golf fan I know he was outstanding on commentary.

Re: Peter Alliss
So sad. One of my favourite golf commentators. When I saw him commentating on the recent Masters I said to my wife that he didn't look or sound right. We've lost one of the best. He'll be up there with Brian Johnston, Bill McClaren, Richie Benaud, John Arlott as one of the all time greats at his profession.

RIP Peter. One of the worlds best ever commentators. If the golf was average he still kept you with him.

Re: Peter Alliss
The perfect voice to commentate on Golf....RIP Peter i will miss your magnificent commentary at the Open.
Re: Peter Alliss
He was actually a brilliant golfer in his day but became better known for his commentary.
It’s amazing he went on so long with commentating but think this was partly helped by BBCs decline in covering the sport.
Tbh I thought he struggled in the last few years with his commentary and Sky Sports has taken the coverage and commentary to a whole new level but they do have a blank cheque book compared to BBC.
It’s incredible that PA was still commentating right to the end of his life and his style and knowledge of the game was unique. Would have been fitting to have had one last British Open for him to commentate on - but hearing him at Augusta only a few weeks ago was still a pretty special way to go out on.

Can we also add Harry Carpenter to that list please?CaptJohn wrote: ↑Sun Dec 06, 2020 12:10 pmSo sad. One of my favourite golf commentators. Re: Peter Alliss
Hazel Irvine combined so well with him.
Dotsy (Peter Doherty) and I bumped into him at Pleasington whilst caddying for Mike Singleton and Bart Morris in the UK's first ever Pro-Am circa 1966. He had presence but blanked Singleton, who was a bit ****** and disrespectful. Brain Barnes was walking behind him. We also went the following year and met Jacklin, Bembridge and Hedley Muscroft. Singleton chatted to em all - whether they wanted it or not!
Alliss was still playing in The Open back then - but destined to follow Henry Longhurst as the man.

Re: Peter Alliss
I stopped watching golf when my Dad passed away as he was the biggest golfing fan I knew, and I loved the commentary from Peter Alliss. He was the David Attenborough of golf and you could listen to his commentary for hours.
As somebody said, he was the voice of golf.

Hedley Muscroft is married to my Aunt. They live in Sourhern Spain and have done for many years. Quite a character. I believe the family knew PA well. A legend of the game and I for one will miss his unique style. RIP Peter, you will be greatly missed.

I had a similar thought along the lines of Eddie wearing in rugby and Coleman in athletics
Re: Peter Alliss
The voice of golf, Bought some his golf books and vhs instructional videos when I started playing golf many years ago. There was just something refreshing and relaxing about his commentaries, never dull and a good soh. Sad day for golf, RIP Peter.

Re: Peter Alliss
Very sad news .... the last of the " great " commentators, he'd had a rather wicked sense of humour ...
At the Open a few years back, a player was in the process of taking a quadruple bogey when his co-commentator dryly remarked that he would need Carole Vorderman to add up his shots ....
" Ah Carole Vordeman " said Peter Alliss wistfully, " I was watching her on " Countdown " recently, and I got " Aroused " !! " .... you could almost hear the horrified silence from his colleague and the producer ..... quick as a flash he continued, " 7 letters ... not bad for a lad who left school at 14 !! "

One of my favourite Aliss exchanges was when he chastised Lineker live on air because old jug ears was taking the mick out of Ken Brown
Peter asked Lineker how many professional golf tournaments had he won in his life

Re: Peter Alliss
Shame to hear about Peter's passing, but 89 is a decent innings, and he had a great finale at the Masters, staggering really that he worked right until the end; the true epitome of professionalism. RIP Peter.

R.I.P. Peter Alliss ,a great player and an even better commentator ..
Re: Peter Alliss
A loss to the many.
Re: Peter Alliss
Remember reading his book, he was saying that when the golf was in Asia the monkeys would steal the balls off the fairway, he thought it was strange as he'd never seen them playing. very funny guy.

Re: Peter Alliss
All the commentators mentioned were superb in their own roles but for me Peter Alliss was the best mainly for his ability to "ad lib" on anything around when the golf got a little slow or dull. I await the tribute programme on BBC. R.I.P

Re: Peter Alliss
As said in previous posts, a great commentator on golf, and in the 80’s he had his own show- A Round With Allis. Who can forget that monster 100 yard put by Terry Wogan. Very good format, an enjoyable show. RIP Peter.
