Sam Vokes

I work with a lot of Stoke fans and live nearby so keep an eye on them. They absolutely detest Vokes. Getting dogs abuse on their forum, the Oatcake. Almost want to go on there to defend him it’s that bad. Don’t think he’s ever been used correctly at Stoke.

Vokes missed a penalty tonight on 60 minutes to put Stoke 2 nil up and joint top, they then went on to lose the game and sit 6th.

He's certainly a confidence player and when the goals dry up probably looks like a heavy donkey as he isnt blessed with much pace.

He found a home here, and like many that leave he has struggle to recapture the form shown whilst with us.

Neither quite the same player once Danny left, their partnership was telepathic at times, and produced some fantastic moments for Clarets fans, we did well to offload him when we did, and £7m was excellent value considering his age and the fee we originally paid for him.

He had quite a good partnership with Gray in the championship didn't he?

Dyche and Ings were the making of Sam Vokes and we had the very best out of him.

He'll always be a Burnley legend for those two promotions and everything he achieved here.

He did - they were good mates too which helped. Sam used to drive Gray in to training every day. Think they lived in Worsley.
In the first promotion season Sam played the best football in his career - his partnership with Ings was probably the best I have seen in my lifetime of supporting Burnley. And Sam not only bagged around 20 goals he was absolutely awesome in our own penalty area defending corners and set pieces. He was unbeatable in the air that season.
The injury against Leicester was a bad one - he was never quite the same player after that.

He also became a really good player for Wales - brilliant goal v Belgium. Without the confidence and development he got at Burnley I can’t see how he would have been anywhere near the player for Wales.

Think we paid £500k for him and sold him for £10m after giving the club everything for a few years in between. He was great for Burnley and we were great for Sam.

He did 16 in 46 that season, and 17-18 was his peak for us with 10 PL goals, but since then he'd only netted 7 in 50 PL games, so it was the right time to cash in on him before his value diminished, a great servant for the club, and of course he scored that vital equaliser up at Aberdeen, our first European goal in more than 50 years.

There was a brilliant piece of commentary on MOTD the night of our win away at Chelsea 3-2. I’ve never managed to find it again on youtube.

“Sam Vokes. Free header. Six yards out. What did they expect to happen?”

Brilliant. Great player for us. If only he had his header head on vs Olympiakos at home.

Skip to about 6.30 for Vokes header and commentary during the replay. Not exactly how I remembered it, but still brilliant.

He came on loan in 2011 and didn’t impress me. We signed him in summer 2012 and he didn’t offer much.

We started 2013/14 with him and Ings as our only strikers and neither had really shown they were the answer.

Game number 5 in that season was at Derby. Sam was sensational that day. I couldn’t believe just how good he was. He didn’t always play as well as that but from that day until the day he left he was, overall, really good value.

It was probably time for him to go but I’m surprised he hasn’t done more for Stoke.

Dyched, the comment you're referring to was made by Alan Shearer during the MOTD post match round-up where the pundits, Shearer in particular, were scathing about the Chelsea defending. I remember it well. Something along the lines of "Well, if you're going to give an international striker a free header, what do you expect to happen."
Great times. They still are.

One of the many players that Dyche got that extra 10% out of. A lot of our players would look lost in other teams

Definitely some truth in that. The likes of Trippier, Ings and Keane were always going to do well. But there's loads of 'steady' players that were great for us playing in a very particular way, at 100% every week. Vokes, Jones, Boyd, Marney, Shackell, Gray.. there's quite a few who've failed to impress at all from the moment they left, although age and injury will play a big part in that too of course.

A very good player in his time with us. But he looked to be heavy and lumbering in his final season with us and we let him go at the right time, if not a little late. So I’m not surprised that he’s not pulling up trees in the Championship.

That said, when we brought him on from the bench in the PL I always felt we had a chance.

Totally agree with above. When he came on loan he didn't look particularly inspiring and I was seriously underwhelmed when we agreed to sign him permanently. Another player who I simply thought "well if other clubs want to offload him, then he really can't be much good". But something suddenly clicked and he was absolutely amazing and like so many players during the Dyche era, you have to say he epitomised what we are all about. He found a home, found a role, found confidence and found the 10% extra from somewhere to turn himself into a top player. When you look at the "All Vokes Goals" video he really did score some belters, especially headers, but my personal favourite was the one against Liverpool in the 2-0 home win. And that was with his foot!!

Avoiding to someone who worked in the sports science team at the time big Sam was the player who found it the hardest keeping fit. He had lots of work behind the scenes and lots of niggles. Funny because when I asked who was the worst to work with from the team I expected the answer to be Michael Kightly or Ings.

So on the outside we saw a player who came to fruition with a run in the team together with Ings, or even a confidence player. In reality he probably just managed to stay fit for a good period which is key to any players form.

At Stoke if he's not playing regularly that won't help. He already spent a huge amount of his career on the bench so it's sad to see him not doing so well.

He's missed a few penalties for Stoke now, yet never missed one for us (and he took quite a few). That says it all about the difference in his confidence.

I must admit, for some reason, I never felt that confident with Vokes taking penalties. Strange, because as you say, he never missed one for us, yet I always had much more confidence in Alexander, Austin and now Wood taking them.

Was certainly a very good player for us

Some players work well at certain clubs and not at others. No big surprise and is why every signing is ultimately a risk.

I very much doubt Vokes would have wanted to go to Stoke other than for financial reasons.

Only Grezza of that list ever missed one for us. When Vokes and Ings were playing, I was always far more confident of Vokes scoring even though I think Ings only ever missed the one for us.

I remember when Grezza missed (against Bristol City?) there was almost disbelief when it didn't go in, such was the confidence everyone had in him taking them.

Strangely though, I'm sure when he went back to Preston, he suddenly started missing a few.

He did miss a few back at Preston. His legs had gone, we saw that towards the end of his time at Burnley. What a signing though.

He was never that convincing from the spot even though he didn’t miss one for us. I remember one at Southampton hit down the middle without much power and the keeper thankfully went so early he managed to be pretty much on the ground by the time the ball rolled over the line!

Part of our DNA when he was with us. His hold up play in the PL was at times brilliant and he was dam hard to knock off the ball.He was useful from our goal kicks as he won his share of back headers and flicks. Wood and Rodriguez not quite as effective when receiving long goal kicks as SAm. His departure was sad but timely, and we got good money. He will also with that move seen his chances of playing for Wales slip

Sam Vokes a hero for me after watching a Leeds v Burnley game in the championship about seven years ago.
I was in a pub in the hostile Leeds supporting area of Scarborough at the time when Leeds opened the scoring.
The pub went mad and I had to sit quietly gutted. But no up rose Big Sam and headed home a right wing cross for the equaliser.
The pub was silent except for me and one more claret in this huge room of Leeds support.Great moment and Sam your'll always be my hero.

When we signed him permanently I was non-plussed. I figured he was just making up numbers.

The manager at the time said he just needed ‘a home’ he’d been in and out of the fringes at Wolves and been on loan at a series of clubs. Once he was settled he was one of our key players for years.

It was 2015.

Interestingly, only one player in the Burnley line up is still around, but 2 from the opposition team are in the first 11.

Neither quite the same player once Danny left, their partnership was telepathic at times, and produced some fantastic moments for Clarets fans, we did well to offload him when we did, and £7m was excellent value considering his age and the fee we originally paid for him.
Spoke to his dad and his mate in Cork
His mate said he needs to play regularly, nothing too do with confidence. He said he is a Big Donkey when not played regularly but we saw what the benefits are of playing him regularly
Fantastic player and not surprised the Stokies miss the point

I liked him when he came in on loan initially, and the reason was that he was strong in the air which we had been lacking. He was a really presence up front and I was delighted we’d signed him at the time.

We had the best of him and he’ll probably remember it as the best time in his career when he retires. How the hell did we get £9m for him though with him dropping down a step? That was a great deal.
