January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
So typical Burnley.
Would rather use a recent 4th and 5th choice CH rather than an ex England international.
The only issue for me would be Jones’s fitness.
A loan to a permanent deal would be good.

How can a 30 year old who has been with us for 11 years be " showing promise " ?Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 10:20 amPhil Jones has shown nothing over the last 3 seasons, to suggest he would do a job for us.
It would be a massive gamble, one that MIGHT pay off, but BFC isn't in a position to take gambles on players. Not for what PJ would cost, and or want in wages. I just think Utd's defence is awful, and he can't get in it.
With Long, Dunne and Thomas showing promise, and all already on the books, we don't need a centre half, unless they are guaranteed to be of a quality to replace Tarks. Heaven forbid.
Re: Phil Jones
You must have been watching a different Kevin Long to me this last 10 years. And not sure what Jimmy Dunne has done to suggest he's good enough to step up and play in the Prem? He didn't pull up any trees on loan in league 1.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 10:20 amPhil Jones has shown nothing over the last 3 seasons, to suggest he would do a job for us.

Leicester have told Demerai Gray he's free to move on. Worth a shout? He's still got time on his side and there's obviously a player in there somewhere.

Re: Phil Jones
You must have been distraught then when David Jones & Michael Keane were playing for us. I don't know how long you've been going on the Turf but if it was in the 1970s it must have been painful for you having to watch Keith Newton.

Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
I was going to throw a few names in but thought I'd stick with the two recent ones from the Dyche era (I didn't mention Paul Robinson or Steven Reid) and then added Keith Newton, simply because he was a wonderful player. There's players such as Lenny Johnrose and Kevin Hird too.
To be honest, I don't give a damn who anyone has played for previously once they have signed for us.
I'd like another Newton though.

We know what Kevin Long offers, we don't know what Phil Jones offers, only what we hope he offers. It has been a long time since he played regularly, or consistently. As I said he would be a gamble, and gambling isn't good for the club.arise_sir_charge wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 10:31 amKevin Long is 30 years old. He’s never been a regular. A fit Phil Jones, in our ystem, would be an excellent addition. As I said yesterday, if Ben Mee can be comfortable in our system I’m certain Phil Jones can.

Re: Phil Jones
I can understand the doubts over Jimmy Dunne, but the club and SD, obviously see something in him. With Phil Jones lack of game time, and iffy performances when he does play, there's nothing to suggest he could step up anymore than Dunne, only Dunne isn't going to take a chunk of any transfer kitty.
Re: Phil Jones
Yes, we know what Kevin Long offers, but nothing more than cover as our 4th CB.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 1:53 pmWe know what Kevin Long offers, we don't know what Phil Jones offers, only what we hope he offers. As I’ve said before playing for Man United in their system and playing for us in ours are totally different. I think people sometimes forget that.

I think we certainly need the right hand side of our team strengthening.
Doubt it would happen but Tripps and Gray would be fantastic.

Nothing against him, but if Phil jones is seen as softening the blow of losing James Tarkowski it certainly doesn't work for me.

Bring in Jones regardless of Tark’s situation. A Dyche fit Jones could add the much-needed beef to our midfield that we have wanted for so long. Obviously also quality cover for centre defence and right wing-back.
Jones is a confidence player and he is the boo-boy’s favourite target at OT, which has had a massive effect on his game.

Ok so we are going to sign a centre half and play him as a midfielder or right wing back! Cork and Westwood have managed to be part of two top ten finishes so they can’t be knocked off the ball as much as you think. Brownhill has already shown in the short time with us he is an excellent midfielder.IWOODLOVETT wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 7:54 pmCork, Westwood or Brownhill who are all too easily knocked off the ball.

Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
Not exactly. He is a versatile player who could of course play as a centre half but could (according to the opposition) also move into a defensive mid-field role, which would give licence to the other mid players to support the attack by being more creative further upfield. In short a plan B and a different sort of attack and goal threat.Steve-Harpers-perm wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 8:05 pmOk so we are going to sign a centre half and play him as a midfielder or right wing back! Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
No can argue with facts:
Tarks is an average premier league defender. He can’t play in a system that moves the defensive line 15m up the pitch. As most top 6/10 teams play. He’s too slow, static in his body, and in his shapes.
He’d be great in a three, he’s outstanding in our system, but only because of the system.

I predict this being yet another generally pointless transfer thread.
Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
A fit Phil Jones would be better in midfield than any of our current options. Fergie played him there for United plenty of times.

People mock. But then probably forget how brilliant Alexander was when converted into that role. When Ben Mee was converted from a left back to centre half. And plenty of similar examples.
Jones only issue (and its a big one) is fitness.
Ability wise he is easily good enough.

It's only the fact that Jones has had injury problems that makes him a potential target for a club like us - that's where we are in the PL food-chain
If he's not fit or there's no prospect of him being fit then it won't happen
On the assumption that he is/will be then we should definitely be interested in a player of his quality as both CB and RB - especially if it means we can get maximum value from selling Tarkowski - if West Ham or Leicester ae still interested then there's a deal to be done.
As far as we as a club a concerned the difference between a player who fulfils his professional obligation to do the job to the best of his ability and a player who whole-heartedly buys into the cause is the difference between relegation an survival and that's like it feels where we are with Tarkowski - nothing personal, he's looking after his best interests that's the way it is
If a fit Jones is available then we should be interested - for those who would prefer we see out the season with one or both of Dunne and Long then with all due respect to them we will almost certainly be relegated

Absolutely - but they would need to be of PL quality (and probably experience), better than Dunne/Long and able to help us keep out of the relegation places - if they can play RB too that would be a bonus, having missed Craig Dawson no one obvious springs to mindSteve-Harpers-perm wrote: ↑Sat Dec 12, 2020 8:46 pmOr we could try and sign a centre back who isn’t extremely injury prone and on huge wages.
