Wouldn’t swap him for anyone else mate.
That said, kicking seems to be getting worse not better!

Re: Nick Pope
You would think they would have him practising his kicking for 12 hours a day.

Re: Nick Pope
He needs to spend all of his time on kicking. I don't believe for 1 second that this can't be improved.
But he has such a "I have this" appearance of him. He comes out and catches the ball better than anybody I've seen, and has the saves. Get his kicking sorted and for me, he'd be one of the best keepers in the world.
Re: Nick Pope
Wouldn't disagree about his kicking but.... as has been said before a Goalkeeper is there to stop the ball going in the net with whatever means he can.
Popey is a Master at that (mostly)
His distribution throwing etc 1st class ... but his kicking needs work definitely.
Swap him NO BLOODY WAY ... We love ya Popey

Agree with what you’re saying but if your distribution is poor you’ll find yourself having to make twice as many savesBosscat wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 5:58 pmWouldn't disagree about his kicking but.... as has been said before a Goalkeeper is there to stop the ball going in the net with whatever means he can.

Re: Nick Pope
Agreed, at keeping the ball out of the net he's second to none. And coming for crosses. Struggling to think of a keeper in world football that is better in that regard at the moment (albeit only watch a limited amount of champions league football).Bosscat wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 5:58 pmWouldn't disagree about his kicking but.... as has been said before a Goalkeeper is there to stop the ball going in the net with whatever means he can.

But I can see Southgate's perspective that kicking is a key part of the game at international level, particularly since you'd expect fewer clear cut goalscoring chances in those matches. If he works on his kicking I think he becomes one of the best GK's in the world, nevermind PL.

Re: Nick Pope
Agreed mate. And of all the things you'd want as a development area, you'd want it to be kicking. It's not as if he doesn't get it clear, it's just not always to a Claret shirt. His ability to keep the ball out of the net and pluck it from the air in our area is second to none so agree with your point that he's very close with being up there with the best in the world.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 5:57 pmHe needs to spend all of his time on kicking. Re: Nick Pope
It's his long kicking that is way behind Pickford and several other top Keepers. If he was to play the 'modern way' of passing out from the back he would be tapping the ball to the players near to him and probably be equally as good.
It just proves to me that there are so many goals scored using a long ball from the Keeper that THIS is the essential skill and not the tippy tappy stuff that prevents him ousting Pickford.

Re: Nick Pope
He’s an exceptional talent. Enjoy having him between our sticks while we still have the chance, because he’s almost certain to move onto bigger and better things.

Re: Nick Pope
His kicking is really only exposed due to our style of play. Internationally, or for other top clubs, he'd only be required to execute short passes (though he's occasionally proved weak in this area too.
Got to say though, that his command of the area and shot stopping ability far outweighs any distribution problems.

His kicking might well be miles behind Pickford but his shot stopping is far superior and he doesn't give your nerves added stress when he's playing, which I'm sure Pickford does.

Great keeper.... as good as Tom for me.
I remember when Tom was injured and he stepped into the breech.... CFS behind gave him an absolutely brilliant welcome, and he's been absolutely brilliant since.
I'm old school obviously... I want the keeper to make saves, be brave, dominate HIS area, and communicate with his defenders. Pope smashes it.

Re: Nick Pope
His shot stopping , positioning and command of area is superb though his kicking is same as it’s always been since he was at Bury ( when I first saw him play and train ) He could play it longer off the ground than anyone I’ve ever seen but his trapping of the ball ain’t gonna change , glad we have him as he’s perfect for Burnley
Re: Nick Pope
he has started to develop a long throw. That could be part of the answer.

I was right behind him in the CFS and actually felt really nervous for him. However I needn't have he was awesome straight away. Totally no nervesbobinho wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 6:46 pmGreat keeper.... as good as Tom for me.

Re: Nick Pope
I think his stats last season, clean sheets and shots stopped, had him as the best in premier league. Probably similar rate this season for shots stopped but not for clean sheets (yet!).
For me it's his ability to take pressure off the team with catching and holding crosses. If not the best then he is at least one of the best.

Re: Nick Pope
I agree this passing about at the back is asking for trouble, hence why many teams are now employing a high press, no successful team has ever succeeded without a solid keeper, and that's what Nick provides consistency in spades.boatshed bill wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 7:16 pmThe trend of playing out from the back won't last too much longer, being able to catch a football will never be out of fashion.

First phone call of the day was from an arsenal supporting customer. Asking if they can have him.
Despite being an arsenal fan he’s quite fond of us as he’s Irish. Although he’s not fond of Hendrick.

Re: Nick Pope
I think 3/4 of the Premier League would want him.
If he breaks into the England first team, I wouldn't be accepting any less than £50 million for him.

Gives you the total opposite. I’d almost say I’m pretty relaxed when opponents have a chance. Particularly if crossing it from wide or deep.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 6:36 pmHis kicking might well be miles behind Pickford but his shot stopping is far superior and he doesn't give your nerves added stress when he's playing, which I'm sure Pickford does.

That was a great day. He must have been very nervous. But I’m sure we sang England’s number one at him that day.bobinho wrote: ↑Mon Dec 14, 2020 6:46 pmGreat keeper.... as good as Tom for me.

Probably in jest to start. But we weren’t far wrong. M
Four England caps and four clean sheets too. Such a shame he hasn’t had the chance to play more in front of big crowds.
As for him leaving. For some reason I feel that he is settled here and isn’t the sort to itch for a move. Hope I’m right.

I got absolutely battered on here for suggesting he took the opportunity to work on his kicking when he had his shoulder injury - it was the obvious requirement for International call ups.

Re: Nick Pope
It winds me up how people have a dig about a goalkeeper's kicking when it's no worse than half our outfield players long pass accuracy.
I have watched a lot of football this season and plenty of keepers pass the ball to the opposition quite close to their goal like Ederson did on Saturday. I would rather the keeper kicked it over the halfway line myself.

Re: Nick Pope
Hipper, the stats don't tell the full story at all. There are several things that go into the importance of the keeper role.
How he calms everything down by plucking the ball out of the air during dangerous times. How he dominates his area and the saves he makes with his left testicle.
He just has an ease about him and I'm sure helps the defence. If you have a solid keeper it makes you feel 10 times better.

I were speaking to a scout 5 years ago in the soccerdome about a young goalkeeper, I said he's outstanding at shot stopping and everything goalkeeping but he can't kick a ball., He said neither can Nick Pope but he will be England's number 1 in the future.
Keep goal first kick it second. Same should be said for other positions.

When Arsenal had that 5 minutes of tappy tappy at the back, did we get fearful or did we sense we may get an opening? The latter.
That to me answers whether playing it out from the back is an asset, or strategy, worth having.

If Nick’s lack of kicking ability is a problem is enough to put off bigger suitors, I suggest SD stamps on his toe regularly. He is world class, he’d be able to pick his club.

The theory of playing it out from the back is that by the time you get the ball further up-field the opponents are out of position. But the times that actually happens seems to be few and far between and doesn't seem worth it.

Re: Nick Pope
He's the ideal keeper for us, great on crosses and shot-stopping. He's not the best in the "playing it out from the back" stakes but we're never going to play that way anyway. I'm sure hes working on his long-kick distribution; it has improved but more to come hopefully.
As per other above posters, there's no current keeper Id swap him for.
