Re: Boxing Day 1963
Somebody might correct me but I believe it snowed that night and there were 6ft snowdrifts round Burnley lasting to April/May...It was the start of the famous winter of 1963. ???

Even more surprising were the turn arounds in the reverse fixtures, 2 days later, Ipswich beating Fulham after losing 10-1 being my favourite. West Hams win at Deadwood being a bonus.

Best on one wing and Willie Anderson on the other. I was an excited 11 year old in the seats in the Stretford End, especially after our 6-1 win a couple of days earlier. Feet back on the ground by the end of that game.claretfern wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 1:37 pmManchester United brought back George Best from home in Belfast for the return fixture on the 28th, winning 5-1

Noticed that Blackpool were still in the top flight at this point. At what stage did they cease to be a "force" in English football?

Re: Boxing Day 1963
Something quite significant happened one week after that game at Old Trafford. We drew 1-1 at home in the FA Cup against Rotherham. Their equaliser was scored by a teenage forward by the name of Frank Casper.

My dad wouldn't take me on that Boxing day game; I cried like a baby all day.
Mind you; I was a baby; I was 8 days old.

Relegated in 1967, leaving us as the only Lancashire town club left in the top flight (Preston 1961, Bolton 1964, Blackburn 1966). However, they came back up in 1970 for one year.JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 2:19 pmNoticed that Blackpool were still in the top flight at this point. Re: Boxing Day 1963
I think the decline started with like a lot of town teams, with the lifting of the maximum wage 1961. They had a few good players before they were relegated in 67, such as Emlyn Hughes, Alan Ball and Ray Charnley.

They went down in the 1966-67 season after 30 years in the top-flight, and went back up for a single season in 1970-71 before coming back down ...JohnDearyMe wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 2:19 pmNoticed that Blackpool were still in the top flight at this point. Re: Boxing Day 1963
Ball was still a Blackpool player when we won the World Cup. Signed for Everton before the next season started.onewillieirvine wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 3:16 pmI think the decline started with like a lot of town teams, with the lifting of the maximum wage 1961. They were. Beat them at home near end of season(Fletcher's first goal for us perhaps) but it wasn't enough.

Thus fulfilling Bob Lord's prediction about the state of football post maximum wage deal.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 3:02 pmRelegated in 1967, leaving us as the only Lancashire town club left in the top flight (Preston 1961, Bolton 1964, Blackburn 1966). Love him or hate him old Bob knew a thing or two about running the game and BFC although with age he eventually lost the plot
