Those last 10 games of that promotion season were just the best times and Wrighty was instrumental. His contribution of goals and assists were vital. Gills, Brentford, Notts County come straight to mind.

Re: Ian Wright Wright Wright
I've never had a problem with Ian Wright, and he often praises the Clarets and Sean Dyche on MOTD.
Great to see he's still showing an interest in the club, and he's bang on about the community a club is nothing without it's fans.
And yes without his vital contributions that season, we would have faced the nerve shredder of the play-offs, and who knows how the future would have turned out without that promotion, it could have been very different.

One game when we were attacking the bee hole he created so much space for himself and expected a Bergkamp style pass to himself when I'm sure our players just looked on in amazement I did.

I was at Brentford when he had a 1 on 1 with the keeper. I have never been so confident that a Burnley player would score. It was Ian Wright. Its what he does I have seen it so many times when he had an Arsenal shirt on. He didn't let me down.

Love Ian Wright and good on him for posting. Clearly has affection for us despite it being the shortest part of his career. Was gutted he didnt stay on. Despite his age and years at the top he still had drive and passion and ability.diamondpocket wrote: ↑Fri Jan 01, 2021 12:11 amThose last 10 games of that promotion season were just the best times and Wrighty was instrumental. Was gutted I never saw him score for us - I left the Notts county game early - the last time I ever did!
Remember so much anticipation before the Wigan game (bit of an anti climax on the day). The hope, expectation that all materialised. The absolute shock as I heard about it being likely (wasnt it valentines day)? That was in the days before social media and major forums. So it was completely out of the blue.
I genuinely don't think if we signed Messi there would be the same shock, disbelief, excitement, crowds and passion as we saw when we signed Wright. Even getting into Europe didnt have that affect!

He’s always tended to be critical of us on MOTD but a few weeks ago he spoke about how much he enjoyed it Burnley. First time I’ve ever really heard him speak about us in that way.

I was at The Notts County game. But left before the goal. I dont think ive left early before or since. I was 15 at the time. Probably had some mischief to cause
I was at the Wigan game. I will have been at all the home games as we had season tickets. Remember the night before that game so excited and expecting so much. Was a little bit of an anti climax but still amazing.
Although I was a regular home and away with the family, I didn't go to the two away games he scored in. Gillingham and Brentford. It was actually the season I went to my first two away games without family too - Millwall and Luton. Bit of an eye opener!

Night match at Gillingham and he was brought on as sub. He scored to make it 2.2. Away end was terracing and I had to wait until I got home to watch the highlights to see the goal. I have never forgotten that. Cost me a fortune and missed the goal due to being vertically challenged.

No. Id been to plenty of games home and away for years before then. First went on at two. Away at three. Vividly remember 92 and 94. Even away games like Oldham 98. I too was at Brentford for that cameo performance by Wrighty.
To sign him and Mitch Thomas that season was inspired and started us on the way to bigger things

I've met him once, believe it or not he was in the US Embassy getting his Visa to cover the World Cup in the US when I was there getting mine. Talked with him only for a few mins but seemed decent enough. I remember him getting loads of abuse away at Colchester (from Colchester "fans") and he wasn't a happy bunny at all, at least we won

Maybe critical is the wrong word, maybe unsupportive. And then, and it was time when the BBC did the Leicester game live, he was gushing with praise about his time at Burnley. You want your ex players to be supportive of you. Lee Dixon always has been and Paul Robinson is now. But that Leicester game. Then on MOTD the other night Lineker mentioned the takeover and said there could be funds for Dyche. You could then here Wright in the background just say: “Nice.”

Wrighty aside, I think that's the thing I'm most excited about - will they give Dyche enough so he can reach his full potential with us (double edge sword) ?ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri Jan 01, 2021 2:20 amYou want your ex players to be supportive of you. I remember listening to the Gillingham game at home and the signal dropped just as the commentator was getting excited.
Me and my mum then stared at Teletext and jumped like mad when 'Wright 90' flashed up. Great times.

I was working in America when my brother called to tell me he'd signed. It sticks in my mind because it's the one and only time he's ever called me
Tend to agree with CT. I saw him on 'They Think It's All Over' back in the day and he came across as embarrassed he'd played for Burnley. Of course it was just a comedy show so he was getting pelters for playing for a lower league unfashionable club.
Thought he was dismissive of us until I saw him on MOTD a few weeks back where he was extremely complimentary about us.
Important signing at the time.

Ian Wright is a top man for posting this. There is genuine affection here from him for his time at the club. My memories of him are related only to home games, his goal against Notts County stands out for me. What a finish.
Re: Ian Wright Wright Wright
I listened to a Burnley podcast recently (can’t remember it’s name) and Ian Wright was the guest.
He was very complimentary of his time with us.
Signing him was a brilliant by Stan. Really gave us a push in the final months of the season

Earlier in the season when we were struggling Lineker asked him about Dyche and Wright said ‘he needs help if you’re listening Mike Garlick’.

My friend had an opticians in Colne at the time (next to the Italian they all used to visit). IW spotted some Oakley sunglasses he fancied so came in to buy them. My mate is no football fan, but it was Ian Wright and so he offered him them for the kudos. Wrighty turned around and told him he would pay full price, no discount.... “when I was a builder I wanted to buy this kind of thing... now I’m famous everyone wants to give me stuff.... I want to buy them”.
Said it all about IW for me. Great bloke and I am so glad I saw him in the shirt, even if he had done nothing for us it would not have mattered (I’m still proud to have seen Gazza in the shirt for example). As it happened it was Satan’s master stroke and a time anyone was around at that time will never forget.

Re: Ian Wright Wright Wright
To be fair, the through ball from Steve Davis for that goal was a thing of beauty ...
That game was the nearest I've ever come to being thrown out of a ground. The previous year, my Dad had a heart attack on holiday in New England, and he undertook a six-way bypass in a Boston Hospital. It was nearly a month before he could come home, my Mum was stuck in a Hotel room, worried sick, and refusing to let us come out. Dad's a County fan, and I made sure we had two James Hargreaves Upper tickets for the game, to do something together, that at one point, I thought we may never do again !
Dad had jumped up at a couple of promising moments for County in the first half, and I thought nothing of it. I went for the Coffees at half-time and when I returned, Dad ( 64 ) looked visibly shaken. It turned out that one of our " Idiots " sat two seats away had told him that " he'd kick his head in " if he saw him jump up again. I knew who he meant .... fuming, I sat sipping my Coffee, and suggested to Dad that he could visit the Gents as the queues would have died down. Whilst he was gone, the D***head returned so I lost it. I'm 6'4", an ex 2nd Row forward, and the gentlest of sorts, but I pinned the miscreant against the stairwell wall with his feet off the floor. I forget the exact words, but it was to the effect that he should find a seat at the other end of the stand for the 2nd half, I may have said " rip your f*****g head off and s**t in the hole " come to think of it.
A Steward came shuffling over as I put him down, " What's going on ? ", the " idiot " scarpered down the stairwell. " Just a discussion about tactics " I replied .... Dad returned a couple of minutes later, taking his place, " Where's our friend gone ? " he said, pointing to the empty seat. " We had a chat and I suggested he'd get a better view from the other end of the Stand " ..... " Really ? " replied Dad, with a wry smile. He's just turned 85 and has Dementia now, but still laugh about it occasionally .....
