If he is fit and injury free then fantastic addition to our squad. He might even be very useful as a holding CM in front of the back four, giving Westwood/Cork/ Brownhill the chance to push up.
Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
Id be happy with Phil Jones if that's what SD wants. I agree if you can/could keep him fit he'd be a really good addition to our squad. Think he'd be excellent for us at set plays. He reminds me a lot of Ben Mee, not afraid to get his head stuck in.

How many people were excited when we signed Westwood/Barnes/Joey Barton etc.? Some of our best signings have been those who have a bit of a stall in their career, and we can get the best out of them.
Phil Jones might not be the most exciting bit of business, but he's proven Premiership quality that at one point was United's starting CB. Could turn out to be great

Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
most of Phil Jones injuries seem to have occurred after he stopped playing alongside Johnny Evans and Rio Ferdinand - to me United never replaced that organization at the back and that resulted in him making lots of out of position last ditch tackles that he got injured from.

With Phil Jones being a long standing Man united player I would expect he is on very high salary/ wage and has not been picked up by any other club whilst he is out of first team contention. Maybe his salary had put them off and this would rule us out too.

Sheffield United after Jack Cork.
According to the Daily Mail, Sheffield United have Burnley midfielder Jack Cork on their shopping list in January as Chris Wilder bids to steer his side clear of relegation.

Hasn't Jack Cork recently signed a new contract with us?

I cannot see Dyche wanting to let Cork go to anyone. On of his favourites and we have missed him this season, particularly in those first few games.

Not sure he'll replace Brownhill or Westwood in current form, but I agree that he's certainly going to be 3rd choice when he's fit, and ready to step in should an injury occur. Plus, it would be to a team who may still manage to escape. Unlikely I know, but still.jedi_master wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 10:11 amI cannot see Dyche wanting to let Cork go to anyone. I very much doubt that we will sell one of our mainstay / regular first team players of the last few years to one of our rivals.FactualFrank wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 10:07 amSheffield United after Jack Cork.

It’s complete bo11ocks anyway he’s injured & when he does return he’ll lack match fitness, he wouldn’t make that much of a difference certainly not the impact to influence avoiding relegation, quite laughable really even with messi I think they’d struggle it’s a miracle there need or at least about 4/5 new players of decent PL standard to have a fighting chance, 12 points adrift with a tough run of fixtures ahead & that’s assuming everybody above them won’t gain any points.Cirrus_Minor wrote: ↑Sat Jan 09, 2021 11:32 amI very much doubt that we will sell one of our mainstay / regular first team players of the last few years to one of our rivals.

A lot of talk about Phil Jones. Dyche type player but doesn't sound like an A Pace type of signing.
My bet is on him going to Newcastle.

More of an attacking midfielder or wide player than an out and out striker

Out of contract end of the season so won't cost to much and I think he can play anywhere in attack

Be a good player for Burnley can play literally anywhere across the front line. LW, Striker, Behind the striker, RW would certainly offer us a bit of technical ability anyway

I'm not sure it's about where he can play. It's more about where he's best. He's 27. By that age, I want someone who has settled into a position and dominated it.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 9:56 pmBe a good player for Burnley can play literally anywhere across the front line. But does that mean anything? He looks like a footballer, but we're talking a goal in 4 games from the stats I see.

All the above rotate between striker, winger etc.... on a regular basis.
This is exactly the type of signing we should be going for. Good player reaching the peak of his ability. If he signs for us he will play up front, that is where he has played most of his games in recent seasons. It also helps in a small squad that he can play a number of positions

He's not a striker, I thought we'd established that. How many goals have any of our midfielders or wide men over their careers ?

Re: January Transfer Window Discussion - Rumours and Links welcome
So from what I have gleaned, Quaison is generally deployed in either a number 10 role or off either flank as opposed to up front. This makes his goal return very healthy, particularly for a Mainz side which is currently bottom of the Bundesliga.
I also stumbled upon a quote from Mainz’s chairman regarding our interest in the summer: “It was close”.
Well, if it was close when we didn’t have a pot to **** in, and he is out of contract in the summer (confirmed this), this may well be the most likely of all arrivals this January.

Looks like you've nailed it in terms of his goal return, positions he plays and crucially your point about Mainz.jedi_master wrote: ↑Sun Jan 10, 2021 10:23 pmSo from what I have gleaned, Quaison is generally deployed in either a number 10 role or off either flank as opposed to up front. I was gonna say 'he's too short, move on' but then I saw the connection. Quaison must have always been their number one transfer target, or how else do you explain the name AlK Capital? We already know they used Kettering Holdings to show love for SD. Case closed!

We have to remember that when shopping for a striker, it’s highly unlikely we will bring in anyone who is significantly better than what we already have. Different, maybe, but better puts them way out of our price range.
