Sri Lanka Vs England 1st Test
A good mornings play has seen England pick up 6 wickets for 121.
Some very poor batting so far from the hosts.

Now 8 down after a couple of wickets for Bess.
A smash off Bairstow looping up to Buttler and then a cleaned bowled.

I see one of Yorkshire's cockney imports is on track to get the worst 5 for in the history of test match cricket.

Still a 5 for! No one would be claiming it’s the ‘worst ever’ if it was Jimmy bowling!

Jimmy doesn't get bad 5 for's that's why. This lad one smashed off bairstow, one off a rank long hop, 2 off missed massive slogs to bad balls and 1 good wicket.box_of_frogs wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 9:15 amStill a 5 for! No one would be claiming it’s the ‘worst ever’ if it was Jimmy bowling!

The abysmal dismissals continue, what the hell was Crawley playing at there?

I believe Wisden are currently working on a new icon to go alongside it. The rumour is that they're going to use a pie symbol, and once approved, they're going to go and stamp it on the 1 or 2 5 for's that (TPC ) (TT P Bresnan) got.

England will be alright. Two Yorkshiremen at the crease now so nothing to worry about.

I imagine the odds on Root getting out between 60 and 80 will be very low.

29 x five fors and 3 x 10 wicket matches says you’re wrong. Yarkshire can do what they like, no bearing on this match.dandeclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 9:45 amJimmy doesn't get bad 5 for's that's why. Very good day for England with them trailing by just 12.
Highlight of the day..... Jos Buttler's catch.

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 1st Test
However much it's down to Sri Lanka's silly batting, that's a great day for England. To lose the toss and then, at the end of the day, be just 8 behind with 2 established batsmen in & only 2 down must be beyond their wildest hopes.
As stated on BBC website: you dont want to bat last so take as much time as you can out there batting now and get 300 ++. Sri Lanka cant bat that badly again. Don't get into the mindset that 250+ will do the job.
As for a "bad 5fer" - no such thing from a bowlers point of view. Some days you bowl great and get chuff-all; when you get 5 when not bowling great, have a nice smile.

Root batted superbly (as did Bairstow tbh) but how lucky was the skip when the review showed the LBW was going over by the width of a gnat's pube!!!?

That's not luck that's a good review in my book.Dark Cloud wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 1:17 pmRoot batted superbly (as did Bairstow tbh) but how lucky was the skip when the review showed the LBW was going over by the width of a gnat's pube!!!?
England have this game by the throat, however we need to ensure we bat well tomorrow, and amass 350 or so to bat Sri Lanka completely out of the game.
Ideal chance for Root and Bairstow to both post 100's here, this attack is nothing special, and the pitch is offering little.
Poor shot by Crawley, but he'll quickly learn from his mistakes at this level.
I love Dom Bess being honest that he didn't bowl well, but you'll still take the 5-30 any day of the week.
Broad was superb with the new ball, but a terrible display of test match batting by the hosts, winning the toss and getting first use at Gaulle you should be amassing at least 300.

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 1st Test
that's why we need to bat well, and not get complacent, a decent 1st session in the morning, and England should build a big lead, but lose 3/4 wickets in the morning, and SL are still in the game, surely even England can't throw this strong position away can they?dandeclaret wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 1:59 pmWe can all look at Tiger 76’s post tomorrow when England lose 8-42......

Love dandeclaret posts about Yorkies, he has been doing it for a while now. I actually think he secretly wishes he had been born in the White Rose County, but does this to put people off the scent.

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 1st Test
Dan Lawrence has done well in that session. He's a southern lad I think, Essex, I believe.
Yorkshire will probably try and sign him soon - especially if he can do a bit of a cockney accent.
As they saying goes, when England are strong, Yorkshire are strong even more so if South Africa are strong. Southern Kolpak Army.
Sellouts. Glory Hunters.

Lawrence has had a big advantage with his coaching at Essex, led by Yorkshireman Chris Silverwood, who is of course now the England coach.

Loving the red rose /white rose banter but why are so many white rose fans supporters of a Lancashire football team ? My son in law is a die hard Yorkie but his football love is Liverpool .... I just don’t get it !

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 1st Test
Despite the weather delays a near perfect day for England, fantastic partnership between Lawrence and the skipper, and realistically Sri Lanka's only hope is a tropical rain storm, they had a brief glimpse of hope first up with Bairstow's wicket, but England quickly sniffed that out, and although this is a poor SL team it's great to see England being ruthless for once.
Obviously India will be a different proposition, but it won't do England's batsman any harm to spend time at the crease, and put runs on the board ahead of that series.
An embarrassment of riches for the selectors to pick from, Burns, Pope, Stokes, just 3 that aren't even in this touring party, let alone in the XI, nice problem to have mind you for a change. And this depth will be crucial given the hectic schedule over the next 12 months, and the likely rotation that'll be required.
Joe talked a good game prior to this test, and he's certainly answering his critics in style, every chance of a double ton tomorrow, and if the weather allows England will probably bat till about teatime, amass a lead of 300-350, and then put SL in for a testing hour or two.

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 1st Test
I dont think supporting a football team has ever been drawn up on County grounds. In the Skipton area there are a huge number of Clarets. I go to a game and often see a dozen or more people I know from Skipton and surrounding villages. I suspect it probably goes back to the early 1960s when of course we were national champions. And it's not just Skipton, Keighley, even Wensleydale have a lot of Burnley fans.

Anyone know the schedule for tomorrow? I know that they are starting early but when is lunch and tea? Sick of getting up and finding it’s the lunch break.
Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 1st Test
Its usually the same time every day get up earlier or later or have breakfast while they have lunch (or tea if you're up later)
Hope that helps

It doesn’t. No. But thanks anyway.

Re: Sri Lanka Vs England 1st Test
Certainly been Sri Lanka's day so far.
Mopped up the tail pretty well and now sit 148-1 in their 2nd innings.
England spinners know where near good enough on a turning pitch. Inconsistent line and length.
No better than the part time Root at bowling which is a problem for us.
It will have to be an all out pace attack for the ashes down under.
