How to Spot a Yorkshireman?
Hi guys!
I'm a midlander by birth but have recently moved to live in the Burnley area for the first time in my life. It's tricky trying to settle into an area during lockdown because I can't do any of the things I'd normally do to go out and meet people.
My liver has gratefully and consistently voted for the continuation and extension of these restrictions. The rest of me has abstained.
However, as I sip a nicely brewed cup of Yorkshire Tea it occurs to me that there is a singular problem in the Burnley area: It's proximity to The Border.
I've got no personal problem with Yorkshiremen. On the contrary. I admire their persistence. But they are clearly infilitrating and thriving in large numbers in the Burnley area.
Some of our most famous fans (John Kettley, Alistair Campbell for example) are Yorkshire as are a few posters on here (MDWat, I am led to believe). Others bare Yorkshire places in their usernames.
However, as I hope to partake fully in Lancashire life I wouldn't want to unwittingly take on any Yorkshire habits that would hinder my integration. I'd at very least want to be able to draw a clear distinction between that which is Lancashire and that which is not.
So please, UTCers - Can anyone enlighten me of the main signs that somebody may be a secret Yorkshireman?

Re: How to Spot a Yorkshireman?
Hi Rowls, most of them don't support their local football team, so their accents are usually a clear giveaway that they aren't from the area, as they glory hunt around the Burnley FC team.
You have to beware those who have moved over there to try and educate them. JDRobbo for example moved to live in Bradford, and is therefore allowable, however MDWAT and DCWAT are glory hunters from Bradford who supports Burnley, much to the demise of his local team, Bradford CITY.
When talking about Cricket, they will claim that they don't care about 20:20, but then give it the big un when they occasionally win.
Finally, they don't tend to have gravy on their chips. The absolute weirdo's.

Years ago I had a job in Skipton. I used to cycle over the border from my home near Colne. On my arrival at the office I was regularly referred to as “the Lancashire git”.

Cricket must be a big tell on the Yorkshire question.

Re: How to Spot a Yorkshireman?
Dan, do you believe those Yorkshiremen who don’t support their local side, in some ways even worse than those who were born and raised down south yet support Man United?
For me, they are. They should know better.

Re: How to Spot a Yorkshireman?
You can usually tell Yorkshiremen as they are usually upbeat and positive about the football team, just look at jdrobbo who has Yorkshire ways after spending most of his life in Bradford.
This optimistic outlook becomes ingrained after years of success and the proud history of the county cricket team.
Lancastrians tend to be more miserable and prefer instant success, so it's all sixes and goals for them whereas the white rose supporters tend to have a more reasoned and analytical view of things.

Handsome, witty, erudite, well-dressed. Easy to spot by the contrast to the locals.

Within 5 minutes of meeting a Yorkshireman they tell you they are from Yorkshire....i ve never known any other people absolutely obsessed with where they are from tbh. It’s why we have so many products that are Yorkshire this and Yorkshire that...tv programmes Yorkshire vet etc.. very strange to be so obsessed with having Yorkshire in the title of everything

Some interesting observations bodge. Thank you. It sounds as if these Yorkshirefolk aren't all bad?bodge wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 4:07 pmYou can usually tell Yorkshiremen as they are usually upbeat and positive about the football team, just look at jdrobbo who has Yorkshire ways after spending most of his life in Bradford.

As I'm not much of a cricket fan (I'm an armchair England follower when it comes to cricket) this information is helpful to know.
A neat little trick conyoviejo. The fear is that I'd stand out if I go around asking people to pronounce things for me but I shall listen intently for offending numbers.conyoviejo wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 4:10 pmHow to spot a Yawkie

Hmmmm. The locals all seem pretty natty to me. The proliferation of claret and Burnley badges is surely the height of style and fashion. Who could argue with that?daveisaclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 4:11 pmHandsome, witty, erudite, well-dressed. Easy to spot by the contrast to the locals.
I take you on your word about style but are Yorkshiremen uniformly dandyish in their attire?

Re: How to Spot a Yorkshireman?
Definitely. Those London clubs have always been the play things of rich folks. Northern clubs are part of the community. Part of your upbringing. Your club chooses you, not vice versa.djemba-djemba wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 4:06 pmDan, do you believe those Yorkshiremen who don’t support their local side, in some ways even worse than those who were born and raised down south yet support Man United?
For me, they are. They should know better.
Also, there’s a other type of Yorkie..... the worst of the lot. Those who were conceived and brought up in Lancashire and haven’t actually lived in Yorkshire..... proper glory hunters those lads.

Re: How to Spot a Yorkshireman?
Oh this obsessive regionalism isn't quite unique to Yorkshiremen. But it can be very tiresome.Hibsclaret wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 4:13 pmWithin 5 minutes of meeting a Yorkshireman they tell you they are from Yorkshire....i ve never known any other people absolutely obsessed with where they are from tbh. It might be that you've never met a Catalan because they share this exact same compulsion to explain where they are from at every possibility and even when there is no call for it whatsoever.
I've had Catalonians interrupt private group conversations on several occasions simple to let us know that they were Catalonian or (perhaps more pertinently) "not Spanish."
They're also very keen to let you know that they're "not talking Spanish."
Do Yorkshirefolk have their own language?
PS: Apologies for the use of "Yorkshire" in the thread title.

This is true Redbeard but please forgive me. I've been living in a cosmopolitan wonderland for several years and have picked up a number of linguistics tics.
That's the way with language, n'est pas and I'm doing all I can to reverse the damage.
If you know of any particular Yorkshire words or other linguistic red flags that one should avoid I'll be even more grateful.

Re: How to Spot a Yorkshireman?
I find they try their best to join in with the naturally funny Burnley Born and Bredders and laugh dutiful at all things that are even slightly funny, so you could spot them laughing way over the top proper hearty laughing out loud when every else just smiled.
Usually they then try to tell a funny story everyone pauses to politely try and decipher their vowels unsupported by enough consonants to make for easy listening then every one just carry’s on whilst they laugh at their own joke
