Dictating directly into Microsoft Word - any ideas?
Hi everyone,
Hope you're all well. I use dictation messages all the time. Indeed, I'm doing this very message on the iPhone, using the dictation microphone. However, when I'm prepping lessons for children, I was wondering if there was a way to do it on Microsoft Word, so that I don't have to use my phone and this, continually have to copy and paste everything across.
Any assistance with this would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance
John

There is a software product by Nuance called Dragon. It was used quite widely in a major bank I was working for, primarily for their visually impaired staff. There is likely to be other similar products out there.

What version of word are you using as I’m sure it’s part of word to allow you to do this now.
Would surprise me if not with accessibility requirements etc. Just looked on my version

I worked with Nuance a couple of years ago on a Project I managed to deliver their Natural Language capability into the business I was working for.
I found them great to work with and the technology they delivered was excellent so if that is a reflection on the other products they provide then I can imagine it being very good.

Using your current method of copy and paste on phones, the best product is Otter and it’s free
To do exactly what you want you’re talking professional dictation. In which case you need the Dragon product mentioned above but budget for the professional version as this learns from it’s mistakes. it is designed as a speech recognition product so you need to train it to your voice and be prepared for a month or two of pain while you and the software learn from each other. Also you’ll need a professional dictation microphone - Phillips SpeechMike is by far the best. This solution will do exactly what you want but at some cost.

Then you should look forward to the next decade and a bit then
Re: Dictating directly into Microsoft Word - any ideas?
You could start by saying "dear Mr Gates can you send me a million pounds, thank you in advance", good luck.

John, if you're a teacher I would bet that your school has a subscription to O365 and as such you should be able to install O365 for use at home (You'll need to remove the 2016 version as they have trouble co-existing) - worth checking because I've just tested the dictation natively in Word 365 and its so much better than I expected.

I was on that until I did a Microsoft refresh, think it would be moments. It wiped every programme! Fortunately, I found a Microsoft XP disk in the cupboard, after much searching!
This makes you cutting edge!

On the speech thingy, can't you do it on Google and copy and paste?

Otter is decent, I’ve used that at work.
But as above, get Office365 and use the dictation icon in Word. It’s well easy. Click it. Talk. It types for you. Piece of ****.

if you have any clues on how to disable the ******* profanity filter in Word - please let me know... I was loving it until the childish urge to swear kicks in and I got asterisks instead! w*****s

Ha. You can’t, that I can see. A quick google suggests Microsoft were considering updating/removing such a filter in 2020 but I couldn’t find any further updates. So maybe in the future you’ll be able to say **** without getting the ****

Re: Dictating directly into Microsoft Word - any ideas?
I pay £5.99 a month for O365 and I think it’s amazing value considering the OneDrive capacity and number of computers, iPads and phones are in this house that uses the subscription. Probably the best money I spend.
