It's now 12 years ago since my heart was broken by Roman Pavlyuchenko.

That said we found the will for the promotion that night.

It's possible, maybe probable, that had we got to Wembley we wouldn't have gone up. And where would we be now?

There was a song on YouTube, quite folky that someone wrote about that night and Pavlyuchenko. I'd very much like to hear it again but can't ever find it when I look, don't suppose anyone has it saved?

That video still brings a tear to my eye. The look of sheer desolation on Grezza's face tells it all.

The allowing of a mid tie signing didn't help especially as he scored

Very true although at the time I have never been more gutted at the end of a game.

I think the performance a few days later when we got a last minute draw at West Brom away in the FA cup told us a lot about that squad.

It was great to see the reaction of the Spurs fans as the 90 minutes progressed. Of course they had the last laugh in extra time but they looked increasingly shell shocked as we went about reducing the deficit

Got a ticket off a friends dad. We we were all in the pub and he didnt fancy going on as it was a nothing game, and the weather was poor.
So he stayed in the Reedley, and I went on the game instead.

I could sense it could be our night as we walked nearer ther the ground.

So close, but still a great experience.
Although gutted how it ended, I was proud as punch walk ing off.

It was absolutely freezing wasn't it? Remember getting drenched on the bottom tier as well. Like you i felt more proud than gutted after the game

With hindsight, that entire season feels like we'd gone on a suicidal drink and drugs binge in Las Vegas following a messy divorce to a boring spouse.

When we finally sobered up it transpired we'd married an improbably pretty but troublesome young girl called Mary-Lou (from the trailer park) and had somehow won house in Bel Air on the blackjack table.

Little wonder the successes of that season fell by the wayside but it got us out of the doldrums and we've somehow used it as a springboard.

When that first goal went in, we were halfway through singing Que sera sera and my arms were just frozen in mid air for about 2/3 minutes, the utter belief we were going to do it and had done it to be hit by that killer blow was a gutting experience.

Some of my favourite Burnley matches have ended up in defeat (Blackburn, Derby, Olympiacos) and this Spurs game was one of them (although technically we won the actual match).

It might have ended in tears but the performance, the effort, the timing of all the goals and the way the volume of the crowd got louder and louder as we started to believe made it a special match to be a part of.

My favourite Burnley game by some distance. Had a 3-0 bet for us to win. Got loads of stick from non Burnley supporting mates after the first leg. I assured them we stood a better chance than Derby in the other semi final (Derby won 1-0 vs Man Utd). We had such an incredible belief within the entire town that season that will never ever be repeated. Nobody has united the town the way Coyle and co did that season. An absolute unstoppable juggernaut.

I had a strange sense of calmness that season. I said we’d beat Chelsea, Play off final day victory was all but confirmed when I woke up at around 4/5am. The only time a got nervous was when Thompson scored that beauty at Reading, I huge wave of “this surely isn’t happening” came over me.

It’s hard to imagine if I’ll ever enjoy going and watching a game of football as much as I did that night versus Tottenham. That’s quite sad when I think about it.

It was a great night and a very memorable game.
I was so convinced we would get to the play off final at Wembley that season after walking off that night. I rang intack the next day and booked a mini bus for play off final day.
Lots of people thought I was mad on our street, they were all thankful when we drove to Wembley and back in it. I could have sold seats 5 times over.

I watched it by myself in the pub. Chilled and relaxed at the start as obviously we weren't going to do it, so no need to get too het up. When Jay scored number 3 I was running and jumping up and down the middle of the road outside.

The previous match we'd made a mess of the game at Deepdale. I'd spoken to my Grandma that weekend and had a bit of a whinge about it. Then in the gap between full time and extra time she phoned me, she just wanted to ask if I was friends with them again now!

Then the Spurs goals and I just sank to my knees in the middle of the pub, receiving a few consoling taps on the shoulder. With every heavy heartbroken step, it had never taken me so long to walk home.

What a game. What a season.

I still get angry at the away goals rule. Have away goals or extra time, not both. It was completely unfair that Spurs got an extra half an hour to score an away goal.

Still, what a night.

2 stand-out memories of that night for me;

1. When ET started, everyone in the James Hargreaves was stood up to watch apart from Mrs G. I said, 'what are you doing - they've kicked off' to which she replied 'I can't watch any more'. Ha ha - just too much for her.

2. When Spurs scored there was almost silence on the ground.....then applause broke out around the ground in appreciation of seeing our team give absolutely everything. Still brings a tear to my eye just thinking about that and how moving it was. A time when I really did feel the team and supporters were one.

Looking back its was a strange night around. It seems ridiculous now but there was a sense that nobody thought the tie was dead and that we definitely had a chance.
I can't remember being gutted at the end. Proud I was.
Its was a fair place to be the turf that night.

After Jay's goal celebrations had calmed a little and some sort of order restored i remember the feeling of adrenaline and nerves mixed together with excitement. Unfortunately that was cut short as the poor bloke in the seat infront of me in the bob lord suffered what (if I remembered correctly) was a major and what turned out to be fatal heart attack whilst the game went on.
A devastating incident for the family sat together.

Maybe it was that, that put the defeat in perspective.

The only solice I guess could be taken from it, and very little at that, was the poor man died at a place that was very important to him, whilst 3-0up against spurs and on our way to Wembley.

A fantastic yet sobering and gutting night. Every emotion possible
That

I watched the game with my Son in a pub in Milton Keynes with a few idiotic Spurs supporters right next to us.

I remember one of them saying.....How many f*@"ing Chris Eagles are out there on the pitch? He's here there and every f*@"ing where!

I was so angry that we didn't go through on away goals. It was a great strike from Paveldingbat though, from a cross by a certain Gareth Bale if I'm not mistaken. Thought Beast had saved it at first until the Spuds fans went up in the Cricket Field. Still bitter to this day :x

A few things I remember, I went with Accy Clarets to the away leg and some of the older fellas suggested to me and my mate it was best to stay near the ground, remember us literally stood outside the turnstile for about 30mins loitering! Remember at half time 1-0 up thinking we had a chance and then coming away thinking we were done at 4-1. I nearly didn't go to the home fixture but went anyway. What a night! Blake put in the most amazing performance I have seen in a claret shirt, he proved every bit that day that he was premier league class (was it Gunter the full back he terrorised?). Remember counting the minutes down for a trip to Wembley and then the utter heartbrake. I've only cried on the turf twice, one was that night and the other was when Jimmy Mac received his MBE.

A dreadful night weather wise and absolutely freezing cold, but the fact that we sold out the Turf and so many people bothered to turn up showed that for some inexplicable reason folks still had some belief in the back of their minds that the game wasn't over with. And boy it definitely wasn't over with and once Blake started having one of the best games of his Burnley career and it became clear that the kid Spurs had in goal was a bit like the proverbial startled rabbit, it turned into a brilliant night, even if ultimately a glorious defeat and was probably the catalyst for the promotion.

I was 18/19 that season and it was the first one where myself and mates had started having a beer and travelling all over to watch games.

So many highs and lows in that season and I don’t think I could have chosen a better season to properly follow Burnley. Probably my favourite ever season following Burnley.

From the 2-0 against Arsenal... to Pato and Thompson against Reading. To our minibus forgetting to turn up to drive us down to Wembley. So many players from that season when you smile just hearing their names. Duff, Ade, Elliot, GudJonnsson and his “don’t shoo...... YESSSSSSSS” against Preston.

I’d gone on all the rounds of the “capital punishment” run we’d had that season until the Spurs home leg where I felt deflated and didn’t get a ticket ..... until the day of the game I decided I had to go on after speaking to a mate and us feeling something special would happen. I spent about 3 hours hunting down a ticket and finally found someone on the old board who had a couple spare and met them outside the ground.

When that first goal went in, I was already stood up and my mate jumped and punched me straight in the nose and broke it .... I still remind him of this regularly...the feeling at 3-0 was magical and I think the crowd actually merged with the team that night and as much as you dislike Coyle - he was a major reason for getting that team and our fans to believe that night. Full time was strange as we’d lost but I couldn’t have felt any prouder.

The rest of that season was some journey too and the decade that followed was unimaginable that night in the pouring down rain hoping that the rumours of Blake putting a big bet on himself to score first and Burnley to win 3-0 were true.

That year is the reason i don't get all the continued bitterness towards Coyle. There's a good chance the majority of us will never experience a season like that ever again.

Coyle really started to get a proper tune out of the team that season and what a season it was. The cup momentum built with the “Capital Punishment” wins and despite the Spurs disappointment, on what was a fabulous night to be on Turf Moor, as we all know the season reached a crescendo at Wembley.

I was at White Hart Lane for the 1st Leg and for 45 mins we played them off the park. Harry brought on Jamie O’Hara at half time who according to the Spurs fans had been struggling. He then, for 45 minutes only in his career, played like Ronaldo and we couldn’t cope. Which put us on the back foot for the 2nd Leg. I agree with the various comments on here that there was a feeling at the ground that night that it was very much “game on “ despite being 1-4 down. Blimey the Clarets did not disappoint. Cracking atmosphere under the lights again.

OC and the team created so many memories that season that will last a lifetime. Nothing finer than being at Wembley with my 2 sons hugging total strangers as the final whistle went.

Along the way enjoying watching a proper footballing team, who went out and attacked. When Robbie Blake was on it, he was almost unplayable.

Despite subsequent events, I will forever view OC as a top man and will happily buy him a beer if I bump into him to say “thank you”.

What a night that was.
As mentioned the atmosphere just built-up and seemed to go up a notch every 10 minutes.

Whole mixture of emotions at the end
Disappointment at being so close
Anger at the stupid away goal rule
But the overwhelming feeling was pride at what we had just watched our team do.

Following game was at WBA for the FA Cup.
What should have been a 10min walk from the car to the ground, took 40 as WBA fans wanted to stop and talk to us about it

My favourite Burnley game by some distance.

It’s hard to imagine if I’ll ever enjoy going and watching a game of football as much as I did that night versus Tottenham. That’s quite sad when I think about it.
That has to be my favourite Burnley game too, after the second goal went in you just KNEW that we were going to get a third, the whole turf knew it too.

I know that we knew the rules before etc but it just seemed so unfair that away goals counted after extra time and not after 90 minutes at each ground.

I was there that night as a guest of the Matchball Sponsor who was a Spurs Corporate Box Holder, we were also guests of his in The Oak Room at Spurs for the first leg where I met and had a photo with Ralph Coates.

I still have the souvenir Matchball which Robbie Blake presented to my mate in the 1882 lounge after the game. To say Robbie was gutted would be the master of understatements.

An absolutely brilliant night having been to the first leg and then put on a bet for us to win 3-0, but sorry that night at York still pips it purely on what York meant in the great scheme of BFC, besides being a bloody good night.

I think we might have won the cup too, since we beat United seven months later. Maybe Robbie's wonder strike would have come at Wembley instead!
We'd have had a chance if we could have reached the final, United fielded a reserve team as they had a hectic schedule that season, shame as we'll probably never be in a position to win a major trophy again, the blow was softened by winning promotion, but at the time it was devastating, especially after our fantastic fightback, and being so close to a Wembley appearance in a major final.

It was an amazing night and a performance to be proud of not downhearted at.
Redknapp's look of relieved astonishment at the final whistle said it all.
I remember before the game when it was absolutely piddling it down, I popped into the main foyer for a nosey round and to avoid.
Alistair Campbell - for it was he - was standing there and I remarked, given the conditions and all that, "Well, this could be interesting".........He replied, "Or not !"
I, like others above, had a feeling we'd give a damn good account of ourselves but not actually to get within minutes of Wembley.
As it turned out, of course, the disappointment caused us no damage.

I was on with my nephew who was then about 10 year old. Directly behind us was Henry Winter, journalist. My nephew was in tears at the end and Winter wrote his article (Telegraph then I think) about the ‘father consoling his son about brave, unlucky Burnley’. I said something along the lines of, ‘theirs legs went...’ and this formed the start and general theme of Henry’s article.

Incredible game and one of the best ever. I was nearly in tears myself :|
