The Car Thread
The Car Thread
Started talking about cars on another thread and thought it deserved one of its own. Anything to do with cars or motorbikes for that matter. I'll start with my dream car which is a Lamborghini Urus.

Someone at work has a Urus, it’s black and it looks very underwhelming in that colour. Lamborghinis should be luminous and look outrageous

Nice choice. You can’t be a Burnley fan with style like that.

I window shop on here everytime the Euromillions jackpot gets silly.
Don't look in the watch section though, it will definitely make you splutter.

Re: The Car Thread
I'm never going to learn to drive. Ive never needed to, living most of my adult life in Manchester and now Prague.
So now, my "dream car" would be a self driving, on demand pick up to take me and whatever i needed to my cottage by the lake. I anticipate that being a thing within the next 5 to 10 years.

Why do cars have to be serviced every 12 months? Does the oil suddenly ‘go off’ after 365 days?
Every 20,000 miles or 2 years would save a lot of oil recycling and be far better for the environment.

A number of manufacturers are moving to 2 year or 20000 miles servicing

Re: The Car Thread
Oil cleans and lubs the engine at the same time, so it has to be changed regularly.
With the advancements in oils it's resulting in the extensions of servicing times.
Still amusing to watch people buy the old 90's oil grade to put in their modern motors.....stupidity at play really.

As I'm getting older my need for speed has diminished. Always wanted a Land Rover. So a Defender or Discovery. Wife wants a Suzuki 4x4 but no way I'd drive one of them. Compromised on a Landy. For practicality.
As this would depend on winning big on the lottery. I'd buy an AC Cobra for a jaunt around the countryside and a lovely day boat as we'd be buying a house by the river.
Owned a VW Passat and a Toyota Camry in past years.

Re: The Car Thread
cars are a bit of a thing within the family, have had numerous cars over the years and like most people you can afford more and more, plus living in the Middle East & America fuel prices has never been a deciding factor although it was when we went to live/work in London.
Cars I've had and loved the most over the decades:
First car a mini (original version) it was my prized possession, felt so grown up.
Reliant Scimitar, special paint colour but main colour white, young children, plenty of room, loved the looks, went fast
Fiat 500 Abarth, fast/nippy, easy to park as I had this in London
Audi Allroad, first version, with the V6 2.7 twin turbo, used in America for several long roadtrips, felt totally safe, loved the strong looks, very fast, plenty of room for the teenager and friends.
I am a lover of Range Rovers and have had numerous models over the years, mostly in the Middle East, great for desert driving, high up and the driving was atrocious there. Driving a Range Rover today.
Hubby was the car fanatic, classics being his thing but these days it seems to be more the boys who have taken over that mantle and hubby has definitely changed in where he bought magazines and went to classic car shows, he doesn't anymore.

Vauxhall "Shove it" as it was normally referred to, as the owner often had to shove it to get it home - my brother had one, for about 3 months until he scrapped it

Hardly a "lambo" of yore - just a rebadged Audi. I mean LAMBO... making a suv... jesus wept!
Last Urus I saw was brand new with what I suppose was some WAG driving it... in black. That's the market now, not some cocaine fuelled rockstar.
Alas, alas!

Some of the old English classics from the 50s and 60s are lovely.
Rs6 are awesome and don’t make you look a ****.
Defenders are awesome - especially when they are done up.

I’m not massively into cars but if I was in the market for a Lamborghini, I wouldn’t be buying an SUV.
The Aventador (I had to Google it ) looks far more like the sort of car I’d expect from Lamborghini - like the Countach when I was a nipper!

For anybody interested in Defenders, take a look at this.

The bloke who owns the company used to live in our village. He was probably the last person you'd expect to set up a business like this from scratch. His cars are very fery fashionable among the US wealthy apparently.

Seen a few of theirs around on the internet. Are they American based? Some absolute beasts. The 6.2 v8 must be crazy in a Land Rover. Seen some 6x6 ones on the internet that must be twice the length of a normal car!

Why get a Urus? The Audi RSQ8 is basically the same car, same chassis, underpinnings etc. It’s cheaper, better looking and won’t break down, unlike the Lambo.

Yes, the workshops are just outside Orlando.
Tom teamed up with a few buddies who were engineers at Jag/Land Rover and they initially set up a business importing any Defenders, or bits of, that they could get their hands on.
They began by refurbing and then custom building adding extras like aircon and so on. They'll now build a customer anything that it is possible to build to the customer's specification, engine, chassis, fittings, you name it. Sports guys are particularly keen to be seen with one. A hell of a price, though, but they are doing phenominally well.
His wife established dance academies in Orlando and his mother and father in law several catering businesses including a "British" fish and chip shp in Orlando so a real all-round success story.

Yes it seems a great business. They definitely made the most of the Americans need for people who know how to do a Land Rover up. Almost like an American twisted. The prices over there are particularly silly as they can only import 25 year old vehicles with matching numbers which are rare with defenders as a few years ago they were only worth a couple of thousand and so were cobbled together with any parts people could get their hands on. There’s so few over there, and they are so popular, they can charge what the want really.

Plus it will breakdown just as much or as little as the lambo.
Re: The Car Thread
My first car cist me £50. Vauxhall Viva HA. Lasted for a few years but then I had to drive to work 25 miles each way, every day. It was no longer up to that, so I got an old Mercedes to get up my bosses nose. It did! Unfortunately, the bits were verrry expensive!
Vauxhalls again after that. Had a company car, Vauxhall Diplomat. That was supreme at the time.
Now my Tesla S drives me to Burnley and back, in good times.
Great investment, once lives big bills have been paid.

Re: The Car Thread
I'd have an AC Cobra, proper one, not a replica or an 80's built model.
I also quite fancy a Metro 6R4 and/or the Peugeot 205 T16.
Someone recently sold their collection of Group B rally cars incl the last of the Audis to have been built.
Also of course the original Ferrari F40 and Mclaren F1.
Other than that, I'm not fussed about many of the older cars.
I quite fancy the stuff like the Bugatti Chiron, just because I like driving at speed.
The Cobra, F40, F1 and Chiron round the nurburgring would be an exciting and possibly a pant filling weekend.

Re: The Car Thread
As I get older I find myself appreciating older styles more.. of course as I get older the modern cars I used to like are also.. well. Old.
I find cars today far too big and bulky, too tall. I really don't like the trend for everything SUV.
Here's my favorite all timer. I've only ever seen 3 or 4 in person and they look incredible.
Generally I'm a big fan of cars from the 90s. The last era sports cars were widely made, and before the time safety and economising affected the industry and the 'look' of cars. I like the Viper best because of its shape being an odeage to older cars, and it's engine just being pure bonkers.

Re: The Car Thread
The idea behind the concept was to create a modern Cobra. I'm sure that's why the name was snake themed. Shelby was involved in the project but not as a designer. He did later have some input designing a limited edition Viper of 50 units though.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 7:24 amI like the viper, Shelby was involved in its design wasn't he?
But it was basically an odeage to the Cobra, and muscle cars in general. It's a shame it didn't continue production like the Corvette. As a road car it just wasn't sensible. It had great success in GT racing categories though, in part I'm sure because of better breaks (the breaks on the Viper were known to be very bad).
On the topic of motor racing, I've been watching some sports car racing recently and it just doesn't have the appeal it used too. I find it strange seeing Challengers, Camaros and Mustangs in the GT class races together with Corvettes and Vipers. Even the lmp class cars and prototypes now are a bore compared to the 90s.
Re: The Car Thread
One of my toys and I absolutely love it (for all its quirks!). Had various performance cars over the years, and honestly have to say this is my favourite car (truck) I have owned.
Re: The Car Thread
My old man had a red and green one, the Hailwood rep. It was awful electrically, he quickly moved it on for Honda Britain (CB750) in red and white and that eventually made way for a CB1100RC.
Re: The Car Thread
Looking forward to the Burnley Classic Car show to refresh my memory of some of those amazing cars. That said, I always struggled to appreciate the TR7, too boxy and sharp angled for my taste....and those huge black bumpers on later MG's to satisfy US safety regs...for me, really detrimental to the overall design.exilecanada wrote: ↑Wed Feb 24, 2021 7:02 pmThere's quite a few TR6's around these parts in summer, along with a number of Spitfires, TR7, TR3,4.
