Re: Newcastle’s run in
Does it matter that much?
We couldn't beat West Brom this year but won at Everton, Liverpool and Arsenal.
Re: Newcastle’s run in
At the end of the day all that matters this season is... we finish above the bottom 4 or 5...
Whichever 3 take the drop I don't care as long as we aren't amongst them

Re: Newcastle’s run in
Will everybody stop worrying about relegation it's not going to happen, we've just won at Everton who sit 6th, and we've lost 1 in 8, that hardly smacks of relegation form does it.
I don't know which of Brighton, Fulham or Newcastle will take that last place, but it most certainly won't be us, and despite their poor form I doubt it'll be Southampton either, we both have winnable fixtures looming, and more importantly a good buffer to the bottom 3, in fact it's much more likely that we'll finish mid-table then be anywhere near the drop zone.

I dont think the OP is about Burnley being relegated....its about Newcastle's run in. Hopefully Fulham escape it.....for my own selfish reasons if nothing else.tiger76 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 10:22 pmWill everybody stop worrying about relegation it's not going to happen, we've just won at Everton who sit 6th, and we've lost 1 in 8, that hardly smacks of relegation form does it.

Re: Newcastle’s run in
It’s unlikely but realistically possible that we could, at the end of day it’s only 2 wins & a draw 7pts, the crucial bit being nothing in reply from us & the others having runs which is the unlikely part, but people being confident to the extent of not caring what the likes of Fulham & Newcastle & Brighton do is foolish, that bridge needs to be maintained if we go thru a winless patch.tiger76 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 10:22 pmWill everybody stop worrying about relegation it's not going to happen, we've just won at Everton who sit 6th, and we've lost 1 in 8, that hardly smacks of relegation form does it.

Re: Newcastle’s run in
3 defeats in 12 and all three to the so called big six. 12 games and no one outside the top clubs have beat us. We have drawn with Champions League hopefuls Leicester and just outplayed Everton on their own ground. We have, for the first time in our entire history, won away at both Liverpool clubs. We have taken 4 points off Arsenal. We could conceivably do the double on Liverpool. We have games to come that we would expect to win but don’t actually need to. What the hell do our fans need to stop them talking about bloody relegation? 17 points from our last 12 games means our CURRENT form is actually better than our season long average in terms of points per game, in other words we are actually IMPROVING. 45 points is a realistic target. I don’t know what people are on other COVID induced boredom but there is absolutely nothing in our current form to suggest even the possibility of relegation, other than a complete and utter collapse in form such as we will not have. By the time we play again we should have more or less a full squad for the run in. I am looking forward to the last nine games with total confidence, expecting a mid table minimum. Come on guys, look at the FACTS.tiger76 wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 10:22 pmWill everybody stop worrying about relegation it's not going to happen, we've just won at Everton who sit 6th, and we've lost 1 in 8, that hardly smacks of relegation form does it.

Re: Newcastle’s run in
Just remember, games against the top teams towards the end of the season will be easier than normal as they’ll have settled into their Champions League places or not as the case may be, are more likely to afford to rotate and / or players being mentally on the beach. Games against so called strugglers become harder than at any point in the season because they’re scrapping. Best scenario for us is that this mini league of about 5 or 6 above WBA hopefully we all play each other a few times and cancel each other out and then our 7 points gap stands us in good stead.

We have only lost 3 games all season to teams outside the current top 6. Two of those were against Southampton and Newcastle early days when we had more injured players than fit
The other was daylight robbery at Leeds
The likelihood is that we will stay up if we get no points

We’re more than capable of cruising to 40 odd points. But we’re also more than capable of absolute dross as recently seen and free falling to mid 30 points.

Re: Newcastle’s run in
While the performance against WBA was shocking, February was an absolute monster of a month for games.
We'd played:
Man City on the 3rd
Brighton on the 6th
Bournemouth on the 9th
Palace on the 13th
Fulham on the 17th
We now have a 3 week break between games.

That's the problem with trying to predict the results. I did that before the Brighton game. Look at this forecastQuickenthetempo wrote: ↑Sun Mar 14, 2021 10:11 pmDoes it matter that much?

Brighton win, Palace Draw, Fulham and West Brom Win, the next 4 games Spurs, Leicester, Arsenal and Everton all defeats. Each prediction which was fairly reasonable before the games were in fact incorrect. The total points tally was not far out. I predicted 10 points, we got 11
Re: Newcastle’s run in
Newcastle will pick up points, it’s all about when they get Almiron, St Maximon? And crucially Callum Wilson back playing again. Wilson being out too long could be fatal for them!

Re: Newcastle’s run in
I know the thread is essentially about Newcastle, but ultimately it's about us because if Newcastle get out of it, then somebody else has to be in it. As I said on another thread and has been alluded to by others above, looking at any team's upcoming fixtures is a total waste of time because predictions this season more than probably any other season, are downright impossible. Plus every team in the bottom half has games which look winnable on paper and games which look extremely tough (on paper) and that includes Newcastle and us. This season every team is capable of winning just about anywhere and there are unexpected results just about every week. (Sheff U at Old Trafford, Fulham winning at Anfield anyone?) From our perspective if we can perform in the games that really matter most to us (Saints, Fulham and Newcastle) then not only will we be fine, but we're giving others a huge relegation headache. BUT we need to keep key players fit and not fail to turn up like we did against WBA.

Re: Newcastle’s run in
Why do people keep droning on about the WBA game? It was one game and yes we were shite but what about Everton, Palace, Leicester, Arsenal to name just 4 recent games? What about averaging nearly 1.5 points per game over the last dozen matches, which is actually better than our season long average of just over one? Why don’t we concentrate on the Palace or Everton or Liverpool or Arsenal performances instead of getting bogged down by one awful game against WBA (which we didn’t even lose)? What about taking a positive from that game? We haven’t played so badly in a long time but we didn’t actually lose. It’s about time some of our fans took a drink from the half full glass.box_of_frogs wrote: ↑Mon Mar 15, 2021 8:12 amHere’s a FACT. The fantastic performance against West Brom is fresh in many’s mind.

2/3 true mate. Not so sure about Fulham though. And no one seems to be talking much about Southampton who have an identical record to us but who’s form is truly atrocious. Even though I truly believe we are more than safe not quite the same can be said of them as they can’t buy a win just now and are sinking like a stone. If some of our fans are worried how must their fans be feeling?

April is a massive month for Southampton with us WBA and Palace to play. If they don't hit the form button in April and carve out at at least 3 pts they have problems going into May were they are playing clubs fighting for a Europe spot and Fulham.
In the last 12 games Southampton and have only gained 4pts, if they don't improve on that record they will struggle to reach 37pts

But I think with our run in, we should be getting around 44-45 points and will probably finish around 14th - 15th, which all things considered would be an outstanding achievement

Re: Newcastle’s run in
Fully agree-if that happened for me it would rival any of the years in the PL when you consider the current squad and injuries. The only downside, and I have seen this with some of our supporters, is that it becomes a reason for the new owners not to spend in the next window. As we all know we cant keep wearing the old suit and always look smart-some thing will give.

Looking more likely than ever that the last round game Fulham v Newcastle will be a relegation decider.
Too late to sack Bruce now though surely- especially as BFS is unavailable (and his magic has seemingly worn off anyway).

Well they lost the first of those fixtures to Leeds, so they won't be getting 7, however they could pick up points in the Villa, Wolves and Arsenal games, but it's by no means guaranteed.Top Claret wrote: ↑Mon Mar 15, 2021 11:30 amWouldn’t be to sure about that.

For Newcastle to stand a chance they'll need to get Wilson and Saint Maximus?
back for the run in after the international break.
If they manage to do that then they still have a chance but they'll need to get
something from their next two games - Spurs at home and us away.
Probably 3/4 points - say a draw against Spurs and a win against us.
But if they lose to Spurs and we beat them then they'll be in serious trouble
especially if Fulham pick up a few points.
But ultimately it depends on how we do in the next two games.
3/4 points from those in particular a win against Newcastle and we're virtually safe.
I do hope we can manage that.
