Norwich promoted
What it says on the tin.
Is that the Gibson deal done now? Would love to see exactly how much we’ve lost on that.

We've lost millions on Gibson. But many people including me thought he was a great signing at the time. You win some and you lose some.Milltown1882 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 17, 2021 2:47 pmWhat it says on the tin.

Many different ways to look at that some will give you a profit others a loss, the next accounts will likely say a profit. Some would argue that we lost more on Hendrick, though his contribution to our stay in the Premier League was much, much greaterMilltown1882 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 17, 2021 2:47 pmWhat it says on the tin.

Re: Norwich promoted
I am perfectly willing to admit I thought the Gibson signing demonstrated that Burnley were ready to push on, happening as it did (unusually) with him coming in before any sale took place. Sadly Gibson never settled and so the best thing was to get him out ASAP... which we did.
I think Norwich will have learned from last season, they did well adjusting to the drop and did not panic; therefore I’m pleased that they were rewarded and have the chance to do a Burnley.

Re: Norwich promoted
Nowhere near what you might think. The losers are Middlesbrough who end up getting nowhere near what they thought they would get.

???? Surely Middlesbrough walked away with 15m from us and Burnley lost 7m by selling him to Norwich for 8m after all the ink drys

I think we didn’t pay the full fee because of lack of appearances etc...
We realistically probably only payed out 80% of the fee.

Re: Norwich promoted
Well done to Norwich and Daniel Farke. he kept faith with the squad who came down, and apart from Godfrey they managed to keep their star names, and that's why they've absolutely waltzed the Championship in great style.
Now whether they can make the transition to the PL is the big question, they should be better prepared for the challenge this time, and I don't think they'll be as naïve, so we should expect them to get more than the 21 points they gained 2 years ago, how many more is the great unknown, but they will certainly be one of the teams we should hope and expect to finish above, assuming of course we're still in the PL when they return.
On Gibson I was one of many who thought he was a great capture at the time, but for several reasons it just hasn't worked out, and that happens sometimes in football, so we take the £8m from Norwich and move on.

Re: Norwich promoted
Totally agree with this. Very much doubt they’d receive the full £15m without conditions, like appearances.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Apr 17, 2021 3:06 pmNowhere near what you might think. The losers are Middlesbrough who end up getting nowhere near what they thought they would get.
Most likely a small loss on the transfer fee but a lot of wasted cash on wages. Can’t be helped. We typically run a very tight ship and the odd one not working out is nothing to be worried about.
Re: Norwich promoted
Lewis went to Newcastle as well tiger.
They have done really well to get up so comfortably, though they will need big upgrades at centre back and midfield still.

Re: Norwich promoted
I also think they need more up front, barring the first few weeks of their premier league season, Pukki was pretty poor.
Re: Norwich promoted
They'll do well to get Oliver Skipp on loan again from Spurs, perhaps even in a permanent move.
Every time I've watched Norwich this season he's been head and shoulders above anything else in the Championship in his position.

Re: Norwich promoted
Middlesbrough walked away with a lot less than £15m. Deals are so complex now but for them to have got that sort of money he would have had to be playing a lot of games for us.

Wouldn’t surprise me such are contracts now.Chester Perry wrote: ↑Sat Apr 17, 2021 4:07 pmand probably needed England caps too while with us, possibly even more European qualifications
We missed out with Danny Ings due to his lack of appearances for Liverpool, obviously for very different reasons.

Re: Norwich promoted
The scary thing is, us and Norwich have been ships that pass in the night in opposite directions this last decade or so.
Hope them coming up isn't a bad omen!

Re: Norwich promoted
Yeah! forget about him, so somewhat like us they've moved a couple on for decent money, but kept hold of the bulk of their squad, and probably more importantly their manager, they just like Burnley have shown that faith can bring rewards, so congrats to them for not panicking, and sticking with Farke.
Obviously they will need to strengthen, but the way they've romped to the Championship title should give them hope that they can compete in the top league, and you'd expect them to spend rather more than back in 2019, and also they might be a more attractive club to join now, especially for players who are on the fringes of the bigger PL clubs, nothing beats regular 1st team footy, and if Norwich can now offer that at PL level, they might be able to use the loan market to their advantage, although hopefully not as crazily as Fulham have this season.

Re: Norwich promoted
Pleased for Norwich, apart from being a pig to get to, an inoffensive club and supporters.
Gibson was never gonna be a good buy, unless someone was moved on. When Ben re-signed, the writing was on the wall for Gibson.
Another club with better buying power than us now in the PL...

Re: Norwich promoted
Gibson is a good player, just not as good as Mee or Tarky.
Nobody’s fault really.

I’m sure we allocated the cash to something some time ago.
It’s had an inevitability about it for a while.
