Ha! To be fair, you did say they were "special" (which a jumbo pack of biros definitely wouldn't be!).

Field Insider: Why do Footballers Retire in Their 30s ? | Analysis
Sorry, reads like an exercise given to one of the young interns.
What about the improvements in medical science, nutritional science and all the other modern aids to fitness?
What about the better football pitches and the better footballs?
Is it really true that when you reach your 30s you want to retire to spend more time with your family? And, then there are all the other "football obligations" that apparently "wear them out" and make footballers want to retire - which I take these to include the international/intercontinental travel out of season - often to international football competitions and world cups? There'd be no football pundits if any of this bit had any truth.
Stanley Matthews may have been exceptional playing First Division until late 40s (was it 48 at Stoke). Ronaldo isn't doing too badly at 36.
No mention in the article that the amount of money they've been paid might be a factor, though there will be many who will always want to keep earning - and not just through punditry and the media.
Ashley Young will be a great signing and a great addition to the squad. Sky is reporting that Sean Dyche was his captain at Watford when Young made his debut. (I don't know if Young or Dyche left Watford first). Sky says 1 year deal plus 1 year option - it doesn't say whether the option is triggered by the number of appearances or is simply the club's option. What's not to like?

Would not shock me for him to end up re-signing for Inter or for our offer to be used as a bargaining ploy with Watford.Newcastleclaret93 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 4:06 pmFabrizio romano has just said

Overall, if it comes off, a good signing. I think we should view it as a Brady replacement. And I can’t imagine anyone would argue that isn’t an improvement in squad strength/depth.
Also provides cover for Charlie, meaning Pieters could cover Mee - reducing the urgency to sign Worrall. No bad thing given limited funds.

Well you would say that your mind is already made up & I don’t think anything anybody could say would change that, there’s every possibility you could be right & I’m wrong & he turns out to be the tonic we need, I can see the sense in some ways the addition would offer, believe me I hope you are right on this 1.Paul Waine wrote: ↑Mon Jun 14, 2021 4:54 pmField Insider: Why do Footballers Retire in Their 30s ? | Analysis

Guys just played 34 times in a team that won Serie A it’s a yes all day. He has been capped by England quite a lot though so you know how our fans feel about players that have had successful careers given the exceptional reception Hart and Lennon received here.

I think he’s a excellent addition if he is within our wage framework.
We still desperately need a younger winger to come in

Re: Ashley Young yes or no
That was my first thought but reading the other thread it appears he can play both sides. I believe he would start so who drops to the bench?
YES from me.
Re: Ashley Young yes or no
36 in a couple of weeks and what will he want in wages/signing on fees?
He's hardly the future is he?

Who will dare to be labelled " thick and stupid " ?
Re: Ashley Young yes or no
Left back is possibly our strongest position.
Dwight only plays left wing.
I’m struggling to see where Young fits.
Having said that his personality seems top notch and he was an excellent player.
If he played on the right he would be a great addition. Maybe he could do that Ive just not seen it.

Definitely a yes from me provided it doesn’t break the salary structure and derail the team spirit we have

Re: Ashley Young yes or no
I agree.
But versatile enough to cover Dwight or Charlie if needed.
Basically a massive upgrade on Brady. If we’d been offered to swap young for Brady last Jan I doubt any fans would’ve been a “no”.

I said yes. I am concerned we’re looking at older players of a higher quality in an attempt to step up to the next level. If he comes it needs to be one of a few decent signings that includes younger talented players too

Yes.
He could potentially provide the same spark as Defour, he's got experience/knowledge to pass on to the younger lads.
